Karina was alone in the auxiliary sick bay on deck 39. She had volunteered to man the overnight shift as a way to get back into the swing of things once more. She was sipping on some juice, leaning back in the office chair, as she went over some files of things that happened while she was away. “While they were away,” she corrected herself out loud. She had always been in this universe. It was the Athena that had been lured to another place and time. Or was it, just another place? She shook her head and went back to what she was reading.

Without realizing it, she started humming.

Ensign Karina Niles
Doctor

Since arriving aboard the Athena, Marishka had very rarely left the lounge which she still had yet to name. Perhaps that was going to be the running joke. The stack of suggestions was growing and she looked through it at least twice a week but the chance to sit down and discuss it with the Captain always seemed to slip away. So did the chance to finish the treatments for her throat that the handsome green eyed doctor had been giving her. But if she was ever going to get up and sing before a crowd, it had to be done soon.

Somewhere in the dead of night she found a few minutes to slip away and, for some reason, wound up in this particular sickbay.

Liam’s hands straightened his tunic then checked his bandaged arms. Blood leaked into the white from superficial wounds and Joseph insisted he get it checked. If not for his doses of radiation being depleted, he would’ve skipped the chore completely. It was a lesson in playing an Engineer when he clearly wasn’t one. It shouldn’t take long, and he hoped to renew his doses once again.

Karina heard the door whoosh open and stepped out of the office she had been sitting in, near dozing. Coming out, she saw Marishka and smiled. “Evening. What can I do for you?”

Just then the door opened once more and a familiar face walked in. “Wow, this place is suddenly popular. It’s been a while, Liam. Glad to see you. How are the doses going? Take it you came for more?” She had been gone almost a month in total. Liam had still been new to the crew, and Marishka she hadn’t met yet. “Well, let’s do this the right way. Triage first,” she smiled. “What are you both here for and we’ll take it from there.” She knew of Liam’s past and knew he tended to wait too long for his doses, though she had no idea it had been a while.

Karina
Doctor

When Karina addressed him, he cleared his throat then spoke.

“Yes, they have been rather helpful. As you guessed, I ran out or this wouldn’t have been an issue.” Liam held up his hand and presented it.

Already, the rudimentary patch job on his hand started to loosen and slip off. Liam sighed then began to adjust it back on. Most of the bleeding had begun to stop, but not all.

“Joseph insisted I get it examined and also replenish my doses. I hadn’t realized how few I had left until I looked. The creature’s been more stressed than normal since we returned from the mirror verse.”

Marishka glanced at Liam then smiled at the Doctor.

“I had been receiving treatment by one of your colleagues for a throat ailment. I have all the information here.” she said indicating the PaDD, “I’m here for my last treatment. Due to my genetics I’m told it’s going to be long and, perhaps, painful no matter what your modern medicine can do for me. I certainly understand if this gentleman needs to go first but it has to be done tonight. Something about hormones and enzymes and… Oh hell, I’m not a Doctor. I just want to sing again.”

Karina smiled and took the PaDD. Reading it over, she nodded and motioned to three available beds. “Go ahead and choose one. Make yourself comfortable. You are right. You’ll be here a couple hrs.” Glancing to Liam, she nodded. “You ok to wait about ten minutes while I get her started, or do you need something more urgently attended to?” She wasn’t going to rush either of them, but the sooner she started Mari’s treatment, the sooner the poor woman would relax.

Karina
Doctor

When Karina asked him to wait, he accepted it. “No, I can wait. If it was an urgent matter, I would’ve gone to the holodeck and set the radiation levels high.”

For security’s sake Marishka chose the bed closest to the door and wondered why she’d be there a few hours and what the other man was on about.

“Well I guess there’s no time like the present.” she said settling in.
