Karina was alone in the auxiliary sick bay on deck 39. She had volunteered to man the overnight shift as a way to get back into the swing of things once more. She was sipping on some juice, leaning back in the office chair, as she went over some files of things that happened while she was away. “While they were away,” she corrected herself out loud. She had always been in this universe. It was the Athena that had been lured to another place and time. Or was it, just another place? She shook her head and went back to what she was reading.
Without realizing it, she started humming.
Ensign Karina Niles
Since arriving aboard the Athena, Marishka had very rarely left the lounge which she still had yet to name. Perhaps that was going to be the running joke. The stack of suggestions was growing and she looked through it at least twice a week but the chance to sit down and discuss it with the Captain always seemed to slip away. So did the chance to finish the treatments for her throat that the handsome green eyed doctor had been giving her. But if she was ever going to get up and sing before a crowd, it had to be done soon.
Somewhere in the dead of night she found a few minutes to slip away and, for some reason, wound up in this particular sickbay.
Liam’s hands straightened his tunic then checked his bandaged arms. Blood leaked into the white from superficial wounds and Joseph insisted he get it checked. If not for his doses of radiation being depleted, he would’ve skipped the chore completely. It was a lesson in playing an Engineer when he clearly wasn’t one. It shouldn’t take long, and he hoped to renew his doses once again.

Karina heard the door whoosh open and stepped out of the office she had been sitting in, near dozing. Coming out, she saw Marishka and smiled. “Evening. What can I do for you?”
Just then the door opened once more and a familiar face walked in. “Wow, this place is suddenly popular. It’s been a while, Liam. Glad to see you. How are the doses going? Take it you came for more?” She had been gone almost a month in total. Liam had still been new to the crew, and Marishka she hadn’t met yet. “Well, let’s do this the right way. Triage first,” she smiled. “What are you both here for and we’ll take it from there.” She knew of Liam’s past and knew he tended to wait too long for his doses, though she had no idea it had been a while.
When Karina addressed him, he cleared his throat then spoke.
“Yes, they have been rather helpful. As you guessed, I ran out or this wouldn’t have been an issue.” Liam held up his hand and presented it.
Already, the rudimentary patch job on his hand started to loosen and slip off. Liam sighed then began to adjust it back on. Most of the bleeding had begun to stop, but not all.
“Joseph insisted I get it examined and also replenish my doses. I hadn’t realized how few I had left until I looked. The creature’s been more stressed than normal since we returned from the mirror verse.”
Marishka glanced at Liam then smiled at the Doctor.
“I had been receiving treatment by one of your colleagues for a throat ailment. I have all the information here.” she said indicating the PaDD, “I’m here for my last treatment. Due to my genetics I’m told it’s going to be long and, perhaps, painful no matter what your modern medicine can do for me. I certainly understand if this gentleman needs to go first but it has to be done tonight. Something about hormones and enzymes and… Oh hell, I’m not a Doctor. I just want to sing again.”
Karina smiled and took the PaDD. Reading it over, she nodded and motioned to three available beds. “Go ahead and choose one. Make yourself comfortable. You are right. You’ll be here a couple hrs.” Glancing to Liam, she nodded. “You ok to wait about ten minutes while I get her started, or do you need something more urgently attended to?” She wasn’t going to rush either of them, but the sooner she started Mari’s treatment, the sooner the poor woman would relax.
When Karina asked him to wait, he accepted it. “No, I can wait. If it was an urgent matter, I would’ve gone to the holodeck and set the radiation levels high.”

For security’s sake Marishka chose the bed closest to the door and wondered why she’d be there a few hours and what the other man was on about.
“Well I guess there’s no time like the present.” she said settling in.
((my apologies, thought you meant long single treatment, not long treatment overall… lol… easy fix))
Karina smiled as Marishka took the bed and nodded to Liam. “Ok, then hold on a moment and I’ll get right to you. There are doses down here for you as well. So I don’t need to send you to main medical.” She moved to get another wrap to cover Liam’s hand with. She didn’t want to just seal the wounds, yet, till she made sure they were clean and clear of debris. “Hold this on here. If it gets worse, you better speak up.” She smiled and hurried over to get Marishka started.
She came over to Marishka and smiled. “I was kidding about hours, you know. It should only be about ten minutes.” She pulled the tricorder out of the small drawer at the head of the bed and ran it over the woman. “So how were the other treatments? No adverse reactions?” She got the readings, then turned on the PaDD the woman had given her and matched up the readings with she was expecting to see. “If this falls in line with what I’m seeing, this should be your last treatment. I would allow it three days to set and be sure you don’t relapse. And then check with Doc to see about trying to train your voice once more to sing. It will be like every other rehab on the body. You won’t be able to just jump into operas next week. All right?”
Karina waited to see if Marishka was ready while she moved to the wall and removed the inhaler she would use for the final treatment.
“I did have an adverse reaction tot he first one and we couldn’t actually isolate the problem. We weren’t certain if it was my Orion or Klingon genetics that caused the fever but, as you can see, a slight modification in treatment afterwards seemed to fix the problem. And don’t worry Doctor, I’ve been training my voice since I was quite young. No jumping into operas for me.”
Marishka hadn’t actually met this particular Doctor before but had no doubt she was competent in her job.
“Good. Wish all patients were as sensible as you.” Karina laughed slightly and went over the PaDD info quickly before starting the inhaler sequence. “This is the last dose, according to your records. It’s about five minutes of just plain, regular breathing. No need to over inhale or anything.” She handed the woman the device with resembled a tricorder with a face mask on the front of it. “I’m sure I don’t need to lay you back and strap it to your face.” She smiled acknowledging the woman’s capabilities with the device. “Do you want anything before you get started? If this works well today, see the Doc tomorrow to be sure all’s well. Then you can start training again with his approval.”
Marishka shook her head. She would be glad when this was over.
Liam watched the doctor drift from him toward the medical supplies. She dug in then collected a bandage and returned. Her hands wrapped it temporarily around the older one. He stood in silence as she worked. Once she finished, her attention turned to the other patient, and started her treatment. The older man quietly rolled his eyes at Karina small joke, but he didn’t chide her. It wasn’t a harmful intention after all.

Once she saw that Marishka was comfortable and set, she turned her attention back to Liam. Grabbing one of the trauma trays, she came back and set it beside him. “So how did this incident happen? I’d ask if you were pushing yourself more than you should, but I also know you do.” She glanced at him with a soft, understanding smile. “You realize, now that I’m back, that I’m gonna hound you if up fall behind again, Liam.” She cautiously removed the gauze she’d placed on his hand. A quick local pain blocker and she set to carefully cleaning and inspecting the hand to see just how badly he’d hurt himself.
“It’s just a simple cut. I was trying to repair a loose wire and I cut myself during a distraction. I’ve had a lot on my mind since the last mission.” Liam stated in a calm, but a tired voice.
He continued while he watched her examine the cut. It was shallow enough not to damage tendons or bone but still affected the muscle underneath. Bits of dirt had gotten fairly deep into the wound though. Fresh blood oozed out during the examination.
“The Little Bastard-Dr. Grey’s name, not mine- has been restless. I hadn’t realized how much radiation I’ve used until I went to check my doses today. I’m at a loss of how to resolve it.”
OOC: Medical records indicate the parasite is influenced by Liam’s emotions. This is both consciously and subconsciously, but the later hasn’t much evidence to confirmed it yet. Karina can do some scans and ask questions which can lead her to that conclusion. Marishka could also help which could allow for more future interactions.
