“Karina.” Séan said softly. “You did what you felt was right and that’s bravery in my book. I see no obsession but a determined woman focused on helping her ship and crewmates. In the end your actions proved your efforts weren’t for nothing. Since you want to go back to work then I see no reason why you shouldn’t. I’ll hold you to your word of not taking any unnecessary risks in the future, but if for some reason the ship disappears again with me on it and you left behind, I’ll be comforted in knowing that you’ll do everything you can to find us.”

CNS Iven

Karina looked up and shook her head, smiling. “So I’m cleared for work as long as I don’t break the rules.” She laughed and chuckled her head. “Well, unless it’s too come find you. Then I’m allowed?”

She blushed again and tried to hide it taking another drink.

Karina
Doctor

Séan laughed to break the tension and because Karina’s response was endearing. It was interesting how she focused the attention on finding him and not everybody. Her not so hidden blush as well as several other clues during their meeting and subsequent conversation pointed out a shy attraction towards him. If this was a session with him on the clock so to speak, he’d likely not encourage or acknowledge that but steer them professionally to why they were meeting. In this case he didn’t mind a bit of good natured flirting. He was still a person afterall. “Yes, I don’t mind if you break the rules to come to my rescue. I would be most grateful if that ever needed to be necessary.” He said with a grin.

CNS Iven

“I’ll make you a deal, then.” She laughed and leaned on her arms towards him. “I’ll save you at every cost, if you see to it I’m not locked up afterwards.” She laughed and leaned back. “I hope you know that now means I’ll have to keep a good eye on you. Just so I’ll know if something happens.” She smiled, sipping her water. “You know, for a Counselor, you have a bad boy streak. Maybe you should talk to someone about that.” She pulled her other leg up to rest her heel on the chair edge, her arm wrapping around her knees and smiled. “You know, if you ever want someone to talk to about that, I’m here for you.” She smiled tossing her best interpretation of him back across the table towards him.

Karina
Doctor

Séan feigned surprise at being called a bad boy. He put his hand to his chest while shock was on his face. The surprise shifted to a mischievous look as he leaned in towards Karina and replied back in a low, gruff whisper. “Be careful. Don’t you know it’s always the quiet ones who are the most dangerous?” He leaned back and grinned, “I wouldn’t really call myself a bad boy.” He said with a normal tone. “A bit mischievous perhaps but I’m generally a laid back, normal guy.”

CNS Iven

She laughed. Karina bit her lip, grinning. “Laid back and normal, huh? Didn’t you just tell me to be careful of the quiet ones?” She rolled the glass between her hands. “Perhaps I should learn to protect myself. Care to teach me how to use the punching bag, someday? I’m thinking maybe I should start honing these reflexes I was told I have.”

She took a sip of her water, eyes glinting over the edge. As she lowered the glass a bit, she added, “Something tells me I’ll need them to keep up with you.”

Karina
Doctor

“I’d be more than happy to teach you some things. A little bit of stamina building, learning to start your reactions slow until the muscle memory allows you to react at full speed, maybe even how to keep an eye on people without them knowing.” Séan grinned back. He picked up his glass again and took a big sip. “As for keeping up with me, I bet you could outrun me no problem.”

CNS Iven

Karina smiled. “That’s more than I’d hoped for. Thank you. It’s been a long time since I’ve needed it, but having the ability to defend myself, and The Doc if need be… well. Let’s just say it’ll do ten times better than taking about the past.” Jet smile softened slightly. “A year or so ago, we ended up on a planet with acid blooded creatures that attacked us. I froze and my inaction nearly cost The Doc his life. Someone else saved us both because I froze. Then Julian tells me I have these amazing reflexes and instincts.” Her waning smile returned as she pressed it all back into the dark spot in the back of her mind. “Anyway, it would be nice to know what to do next tine. In case I’m not rescued again.” She laughed.

Quickly changing the subject, she took a long draw of water. Nearly draining the glass. “Gracious! We keep on this tangent and I’ll need something stronger than water.” She laughed trying to make light of it and joke with him.

Karina
Doctor
(babbling fool?)

Séan grinned in response but then shook his head. “It’s tempting to get something a bit stronger but I’m afraid I’ve got some responsibilities to get to. Still need to check in with the CO and medical, plus my new staff. Which actually maybe you can help me. What can you tell me about the CO and the CMO?”

CNS Iven

Karina recovered quickly realizing she had probably crossed a line. “Of course, I shouldn’t have kept you this long.” She had pushed back her glass, about to get up, when he asked about the Captain and Doc. “Well, the Captain is a good person. I know lots of folks say that, but she truly is. This last bit of nonsense was hard on her, though, I think. And I’m guessing, while she won’t come to you, you may have to corner her once a while and get her to talk. She needs someone on the outside she can unload on without worry of gossip running from it. She truly cares about this crew and will lay her life down for them. It’s a rare thing.” She took a breath and thought about the Doc.

“As for Doctor Grey… well, he’s an interesting man. Quiet and reserved, but will throw himself in front of a phaser for others. He tried saving me during that incident I mentioned. Even though it put us both in danger because of it. If you want to get on his good side, I’m sure the replicators can inform you of his favorite drink of choice. It’s recreational, far as I know. At least, I’ve never seen it affect work. So you don’t have to worry there. He’s a quiet man but always eager to help. He’s actually helping me get my advancements in order so I can work towards my CMO qualifications.”

She leaned back a moment, her pulled up leg moving to rest on the floor again. “Everyone here is helpful and protective. Most of us, to a fault. This latest disappearance of the ship took everyone by surprise. I know several are having troubles reconciling what occurred. Many thought they’d never come back. And many of us here thought we’d never see them again. Sleeplessness, nightmares and anxiety attacks for no reason are becoming a bit to regular. You definitely have your work cut out for you, Sean.” She stood up realizing she’d over stayed her welcome. “If you ever need anything, you know where to find me. And remember, please, you are here to help us. So let me be here to help you. My confidentiality oath is the same as yours. Always know you can come and dump on me when things pile up.” She smiled softly at him with genuine concern. “Someone needs to counsel the Counselor, sometimes… right?”

Karina
Doctor

Séan stood up from his seat and stepped close to Karina. He could feel the shift from flirty to awkward and that wasn’t his intent at all but he did need to be fully in his faculties when meeting with who he needed to meet with. Being impaired when meeting the CO did not sound like a good idea. Deciding to do a bit of a calculated risk and perhaps a little unprofessional, he stepped into Karina’s personal space and gently put his arms around her. She could easily pull free if she didn’t want the hug but he knew she wouldn’t initiate one so he went out on a limb with this. “Thank you Karina. For you advice, your wisdom, and your offer. A drink isn’t in the cards today but if you’re still interested and it won’t interfere with your duties, well you know where to find me. I’d gladly sit down with you and have a drink.”

CNS Iven

As Sean stood, Karina prepared herself to shake his hand. But when he stepped closer than necessary for a handshake, she hitched her breath. When his arms first wrapped around her, she froze, expecting it to be a quick professional hug.

But he didn’t release her. She closed her eyes and her arms circled his waist, though still tentative. “I’d like that very much,” she managed without her voice cracking, which surprised her. She held the hug for just a second more, suddenly realizing just how much that small gesture helped in ways she didn’t realize.

Again not wanting to assume anything, after all he was probably the most handsome man on the ship now, which meant ‘out of her league’, she stepped back reluctantly and smiled. “I’ll hold you to it. Perhaps dinner one night while we’re still here, before things go crazy out there.” Her head nodded to the windows indicating deep space.

“Be yourself with the Captain. You’ll be great. And definitely be yourself with Grey.” She laughed strong back from him. “He’ll definitely appreciate it. And Sean, welcome aboard, again.” She smiled with a nod and took another step away to head towards the door.

Séan stood where he was as Karina left his slightly unprofessional embrace and watched as she walked to his door. He answered her softly with a smile. “Thank you Karina. I can’t be anyone but myself anyhow. I look forward to dinner with some drinks.”

CNS Iven

Karina smiled back. “Me, too.” She nodded once more and disappeared into the hallway. Not wanting to run anymore, she headed back to her quarters to shower. She never realized she left her PaDD in his quarters.
