Viyara almost said ‘a kiss’, but stopped herself before the words came out of her mouth. Instead she tilted her head to the side and thought about it for a moment. She then said, “How about the winner gets to decide where we go next? On the holodeck or anywhere on the station?”

Juvri nodded, smiling. “That’s a good idea! I like it.” She said. “Okay! Ready to start?” She asked.

“Alright!” Viyara beamed and moved in position. Once Juvri seemed ready, she raised an eyebrow in question and then said, “On the count of three. Three - Two - One - Go.” With that she began to climb with an easy and agility that showed that she had a lot of experience in this. It would have been easy for her to beat her new crewmate, but she wanted to give her chance. And what was more, she felt the need to keep an eye on her to make sure Juvri was safe. That of course slowed her down a little and her attention wasn’t as closely on her own movements as it should be. Especially considering that the safeties were still turned off.

Juvri was well behind Viyara, though she made steady progress up the cliff face. Each step up seemed to take quite a lot of effort - Juvri… probably wasn’t as fit as she should be. But she seemed to be doing okay, so far. “You’re so fast!” She said, smiling as she looked up to Viyara.

Viyara looked down towards Juvri and winked. “Well, I have done this a million times or so,” she grinned and waited a little to let Juvri catch up to her. As competitive as she could be in certain situations, it wasn’t much fun to win when she had so much of an advantage. Once Juvri was close by, Viyara reached for a handhold a little higher up without paying close attention to what she was doing. One of the small rocks was lose and her hand slipped as it fell towards the ground. Viyara cursed, but managed to hold on with her other hand. Moving her attention form the other woman full towards what she was doing, she quickly managed to get a safe hold with both her hands again.

Juvri let out a small gasp as she watched Viyara’s grip slip, but then gave a breath of relief when she got her grip back. “That was close! Be careful, okay?” She said, giving a small smile. Not one to give up, she used the opportunity to gain some ground on the other woman up the cliff face.

“Sure, sure,” Viyara replied with a grin as she looked towards Juvri once again. While she was presenting herself as carefree and nonchalant, she still felt the effects of the adrenaline rushing through her body. After all, as little as she cared about certain things, she had no desire to die and a fall like that with the safeties turned off would have caused severe injuries at the very least. Paying more attention to where she was putting her hands and feet, she continued her way up the face of the mountain till her hands reached the brim. After pulling herself skillfully up, she turned around and lay flat on her stomach so that she could give Juvri a hand to get fully up as well; if she wanted or needed any assistance.

Juvri was about ¾ the way up the cliff when she found herself… a little stuck. She had advanced to a smoother part of the rock face, where no apparent handholds presented themselves to the rookie’s eyes. And then she made the mistake of looking down. She clamped to the rock face, looking up once more. She was scared enough then that the entire face look flat, and she saw no viable moves. “Um… Viyara?” She said, her voice higher than normal, and a bit squeaky. “Wh-where…?” She managed, currently unphased by Viyara’s victory in their little race.

Quickly taking in what happened, Viyara muttere a barely audible curse. From her position she couldn’t see well enough where good hand and foot holds would be, which left her with two options: a) tell Juvri to hold onto the rope and then pull her up or b) climbing back down and guiding her from there. Or just shutting down the program, but she didn’t want to do that. First things first, though. Still lying on her stomach she said as calmly as possible, “Look at me Juvri and then take a few deep breaths. Can you do that?”

She nodded, a tense and quick movement, forcing herself to take a few deep breaths.

“Okay, stay where you are and keep breathing deeply. I’m coming down to you,” she smiled calmly and encouragingly. While making sure that she stayed within Juvri’s field of vision, Viyara made a few alterations to the program, including turning the safeties on at last. A second rope appeared, dangling down the side of the rock close to Juvri. And since she was still wearing the harness from earlier it took Viyara no time to secure herself ad start her quick, but careful descent towards the other woman. After all, the last thing she wanted to do was to startle her.

“Okay!” She said, still clinging to her current handholds, though it seemed her hands got more tired when she was still than when she was moving.

It wasn’t long, though, till Viyara was right next to Juvri. Turning her head, she looked straight at her and said, “You are doing very well. This happens to everyone who does rock climbing. So even without just turning off the program we have two options. A) I can guide you as we make our way up together. Or b) We can go down side by side. What do you want Juvri?”

With Viyara next to her now, Juvri felt a little more confident, and though they were on now, she had never known the safeties were off, so she reminded herself that it wasn’t real and nothing bad would happen. To her, the rock face was a metaphor of sorts - to succeed in Security she’d have to be way braver than she was, and if she couldn’t even climb a fake wall, how could she expect to be a great officer? And the reminder of that thought returned her determination to her and she said, “Let’s try to go up. I want to make it up.”
