“Unfortunately I’m still on duty for awhile longer. I have a last minute appointment in awhile. So it’ll have to be tea for you. Mostly so I don’t feel left out,” she said, toss a grin his way.

Retrieving their drinks, Janna took the other armchair and sipped on her coffee. Letting a small exhale of contentment escape. “So, you said the day was long. How are finding the Athena?”

“Fairly pleasant so far.” Séan responded after taking a sip of tea. “The Captain is an interesting person for a counselor to talk to. A lot of layers to her and that’s with what she’s willing to show. The CIO and CMO seem to have an interesting relationship. Not quite antagonism but good humored chiding, perhaps? Before all that I met Doctor Niles right as I first boarded and found her quite enthusiastic. I’m looking forward to meeting the rest of the crew and getting to know them.”

Janna grinned. “It’s an interesting group for sure. The captain alone you could do weekly chats with for a year and still not figure out entirely,” she said with a laugh. “That woman takes being an enigma to new heights.”

He set his tea down after another drink and looked at Janna with a smile. “I suppose I should focus on this meeting with you though as I don’t want you to be late for your appointment. I’m confident in being able to carry out my duties and don’t have any emotional burdens that would prevent my doings so. I’ve got skeletons in my proverbial closet sure, but everyone does.”

She sipped her coffee slowly, crossing a leg over her knee. Lowering her mug, Janna gazed at him. “I’ve got time,” she said lightly, her pale green eyes gazing intently. She didn’t say anything further but her gaze didn’t waver even when she sipped once again.

Séan studied Janna for a long moment before he nodded slowly. “Good. It is always important to make the patient feel as if they’re not being rushed, even if they’re rushing the session themselves. My thought is that it’s fine to run over an appointed time for a bit if progress is being made but within reason.”

This could either be the faster session ever or the longest. Much depended on how she handled the next few minutes. “I agree. There’s only so much any one person can manage in a single session, but timing is everything. Cutting a session short just when you’re at the critical point can really set you back. It’s worth going late for.”

“So where were you before you came to us on the Athena?” Kingston asked.

~Janna Kingston, ACNS

“Starfleet Medical for about two years. I think it was to groom me for a department head posting and give me a chance to start my PhD dissertation. It was interesting the variety of cases you’d see on Earth. It ranged from people being shipped back to work on trauma from some horrific mission gone wrong to people afraid of heights after going mountain climbing and then getting injured because they didn’t use any anchor lines.” Séan broke eye contact long enough to retrieve his tea and took another sip. “How long have you been on the Athena Janna?”
