Jenn grinned. “I mean, there are a few too many to list,” she replied. “Not allergies, that I’m aware of. But my mom always told me I was the pickiest child in the Galaxy. I like spice but my metabolism literally cannot handle it. I don’t know why, but I go red as a beet whenever I eat anything spicy. Can’t stand onions either, weirdest choice of foods I don’t like. Generally though, I’ll try anything once. Twice if it’s been over five years since the first time I had it.”

Ghubari couldn’t help but laugh. “Oh no, well this is terrible. But I think I can adapt,” she said with a gleam in her pale amber eyes. “Tell you what, why don’t you take the rest of today and tomorrow morning to settle in and I’ll make you lunch tomorrow?”

Fl. Captain Koraia, CO

“Oh no, is your main cuisine spicy and full of Onions?” Jenn replied with a small chuckle, then stood up. “I suppose I’ll get my duty schedule too? Or am I supposed to be designing those now? I, uh, I don’t know who decides who works when.”

Wallace, XO

“Yes to the cuisine issues,” Ghubari said with a smirk. “As for schedules, I usually expect my first officer to be on the bridge during Alpha shift. I will be there as needed, but I float about, often working in my ready room. I will give you access to my schedule so you can see where I expect I’ll be and it’s up to you to fill in the gaps so we as a team are providing the leadership the ship needs. Meetings happen a lot so we work around each other’s schedules and ensure someone has the bridge. It doesn’t always need to be us though. There are plenty of qualified bridge officers.”

Jennifer nodded, absorbing the information as given. “Alpha shift, simple enough to remember,” she said with a small nod.

She held her index finger up. “Oh! And just so we’re on the same page, I will never put my ship and crew in unnecessary risk, but I am not one of those captains that sits on the sidelines, nor have I been afforded that luxury. I will defer to you for away teams much of the time, but if I choose to go down myself, there will always be a good reason for it and I expect you to share any objections with me in private. Just don’t expect that that will necessarily change my mind.” She was serious too, but Koraia couldn’t help the twinkle that appeared in her eyes. Was it a challenge? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

Fl. Captain Koraia, CO

“Understood, showing dissent between commanding officers on the bridge is an unfortunately effective way to create unease amongst the crew,” Jennifer said. There was a small crease in her forehead as she spoke, but she seemed agreeable enough. Sure, standard protocol was this and that, but barely anyone followed that specific protocol all the time.

Wallace, XO

Koraia gave a sharp nod. “Good. I’m glad we’re on the same page.” She leaned back and considered Wallace for a moment before smiling. “I’ve done this whole new XO thing a few times now and it never ceases to be ever so slightly awkward. If it feels that way to you as well, know that it gets better. And this ship is worth it. Whatever we are asked to do, to sacrifice, it’s always worth it,” she said more softly, her tone almost reverent.

Fl. Captain Koraia, CO

Jennifer nodded along with what the Captain was saying, looking thoughtful herself. “I can’t imagine what it must be like for you…” she looked out the window again. “I look forward to seeing all that the Athena has to offer.” After a few moments, she tapped her legs with her palms and stood up. “Right then, I shouldn’t keep you occupied. I’ll be off, I suppose, leave you to your other duties.”

Wallace, XO
