“And lastly… I need to know how you want me to handle Emergency Operations. Typically, in the very likely event that we find ourselves in the thick of it, an Operations officer is on the bridge and coordinates power distribution to critical systems and damage control… but I have found that some Engineers get very upset when Operations ‘steps on their turf’, so to speak. So I would like to ask you how you want that handled. I am an Engineer, and do work well with Engineering. I leave them to the day to day and then lend a hand when asked or during the action. I just don’t want to bruise any egos in the process. I have found in the past it is best if the Commanding Officer decides that relationship from the start. So how do you want me to handle that particular scenario, Ma’am?”

Ghubari inhaled deeply and her pale amber eyes seemed distant for a moment before she refocused on Hammor. “I will get back to you on that. i actually have no problem with you being on the bridge- it’s certainly big enough- but my XO is brand new and it’s something I want to walk through with her. Not the answer I’m sure you were hoping for, but the best I can do at the moment. Give me until later today.”

Hammor shrugged, the muscles in his shoulders rolling under his uniform. “I wasn’t hoping for anything, Ma’am. I’m just setting expectations and trying to anticipate where things could go sideways… that’s kind of my job, right?” and he laughed softly. “But regardless of how that last question is answered, I will make sure all of the Ops team is qualified for bridge duty regardless. There are three Auxillary consoles on the bridge. Having a standing Operations officer will take only one of those, and lessen the workload on the rest of the various department staff there just by the nature of what we do. No sense having to pull the Engineering officer off of monitoring ship systems because a toilet backed up in the lounge.”

She chuckled. “Well, we’ve managed thus far, but I admit it will be nice to have one other base covered. Like I said, I doubt it’ll be a problem,” Koraia said, tapping her long fingers on the edge of the desk. “Anything else you want to cover now? I should give you an additional disclaimer that I run a tight ship, but it’s vastly more difficult on one this size. I demand a lot out of each member of this crew, and even more of myself. You can read our mission reports, but know that we’ve gone to hell and back Commander, several times over. But it’s made this crew as excellent as it is and so I don’t apologize for my own high expectations. That being said, and despite being incredibly stubborn, I do listen to my crew and I value input. respectfully given, of course.”

Hammor grinned. “I can tell you one thing for certain, Ma’am. As long as I am here, you will get my input and it will always be given with respect. I will not guarantee it will always be what you want to hear, though. Sometimes, the truth just hurts.”

Her expression sobered, but only slightly. “Commander, I’m an empath who married a telepath. You don’t have to tell me about the realities of the truth,” she said with a gleam in her pale eyes. “But good, I value honesty. Goodness knows there are enough being in the galaxy who like to play games with my ship and crew and I’m quite happy to keep that nonsense external.”

Koraia gently slapped her hands on her desk. “Right. I’m sure you have things to do and other boarding evals to take care of. I’ll get back to you on the stuff we discussed and I’m sure the next time we’ll chat you’ll have another long list for me. Sounds about right?”
