The Yeoman from Fleet Command made her way towards the dining hall on the station, PaDD in hand. The Officer’s Mess on Starbase 1 was a marvel befitting the largest and most famous station in Federation space. A vast array of aromas… most of them pleasant… wafted from the kitchen area and were only slightly dampened by the raised voices coming from behind the swinging metal door.

“I don’t care what your excuse is! I said today and I mean today!”

“And I’m telling you that ain’t gonna happen! You can yell at me all you want, but that doesn’t change the fact that there was a massive earthquake and all your beloved vegetables were lost!”

“There you go! Blaming someone else because you couldn’t get the job done! Typical of your kind, I have to say!”

“My kind?! My kind?! And just what, exactly, do you mean by ‘my kind’?”

“You know… GREEEEEN!!!”

There was a long silence… which was broken after a tense pause by the sound of laughing and the clattering of metal. Taking that as a good sign, the Yeoman opened the door.

Inside the kitchen stood a massively large Orion in the gold uniform of Engineering. The figure had the front of the white coat of the kitchen’s chef crumpled up in one fist and the chef’s feet were off the floor a good six inches. In his defense, the chef was laughing and patting the Orion on the shoulder in a friendly fashion.

“Okay, okay! You win!” and the chef settled to the deck and both men laughed for a moment. Seeing the wide-eyes Yeoman, the chef immediately became surly and said “Waddaya want? Lunch is outside the kitchen, Ensign. Go!” She half-turned and then caught herself and said “Oh! Oh no sir. I’m not hear to eat. I’m h-” and the chef cut her off immediately. “Not here to eat? What? Why not? Is my food not good enough for you, young lady? Is there something wrong with the way I cook? Did you have to come here to tell me my food does not appeal to you? If you aren’t here for food… then get out of my kitchen!!!” he yelled before a green hand settled on his shoulder. “Easy, Rubio. I think she may be looking for me.” and the Orion stepped between the seething chef and the yeoman. “Ensign, can I help you?” he asked calmly and with a small smile.

“Y-y-y-yes, sir. Are you Lieutenant Commander Hammor?” she asked quietly, her eyes darting back and forth between the two imposing figures. “Indeed. And don’t pay any mind to him. He’s surly around sentient beings.” and he motioned for her to step outside the kitchen. As the door swung shut behind them, the yeoman looked up at Hammor and said “I’m sorry to interrupt, Commander, but…” and she held out the PaDD to him. “Orders, Sir. Marked priority.” Hammor took the PaDD and input his credentials. Sure enough… orders. And for ship duty, no less. Hammor smiled and looked at the yeoman. ‘Appreciate you bringing them straight to me. Please tell the Admiral I have received them. And tell him I said thank you.” The yeoman walked away and Hammor went back into the kitchen to say farewell to his friend.

Five days later, a shuttle approached the USS Athena. =/\= Athena, this is Shuttle Rembrandt. Request permission to dock. One transfer on board, relaying orders now. =/\= There was a slight pause and a voice came through the feed. =/\= Rembrandt, you are clear to land, Bay Two. =/\= A few minutes later, and the shuttle powered down on the deck of the Athena.

Hammor, Ops

Stark stood quietly waiting for Hammor to alight. His dark face and darker eyes were unreadable but underneath the surface his mind was awhirl. It seemed that of late the Hand of Destiny was upon the Athena. First, they had saved the universe from a Time Bandit, then they had saved two universes from cataclysm and now it seemed to him that every new recruit to Athena was “purpose destined” for something beyond the norm.

Reflecting on the dream he had suffered the night before he knew that Destiny was what had brought him back to the Athena. He wondered what Hammor was going to find here. One thing was for sure, Stark would be there.

He snapped his neck to one side releasing gas in his vertebrae with an audible pop. His sigh was deep but satisfied.

As the shuttle powered down, the hatch opened. A young, spry human stepped out and stretched and looked around. He then turned and went back in the shuttle and came out with a bag. As he began to walk away, his eyes fell on the Caitian and he nodded and said “Hello, sir.” and made his way further into the ship.

A moment after that, the hatch was filled with a figure who turned partially sideways to exit the shuttle. The gold uniform of Engineers seemed to barely contain the green humanoid inside it. Orions, of course, were a highly muscular species… especially the males… but this one was big. Almost seven feet in height and well over the average weight, the figure stepped onto the deck with a large leather bag in one hand. Lieutenant Commander pips shined on his collar; and his emerald-green eyes shone as they scanned the bay. Once they landed on the CIO, he inclined his head slightly and walked forward.

“Lieutenant Commander Nightstalker, if I am not mistaken. Lieutenant Commander Daggum Hammor, the new Chief Operations Officer. A pleasure.” and he extended a large green hand forward.

Hammor, Ops

Stark smiled showing a generous amount of canine as he did so and took the hand with his paw. “You are not mistaken and the pleasure is mine.”

“I hope you had a good journey, I’d imagine Starfleet standard seating might be a little on the snug side.”
