Juvri was about ¾ the way up the cliff when she found herself… a little stuck. She had advanced to a smoother part of the rock face, where no apparent handholds presented themselves to the rookie’s eyes. And then she made the mistake of looking down. She clamped to the rock face, looking up once more. She was scared enough then that the entire face look flat, and she saw no viable moves. “Um… Viyara?” She said, her voice higher than normal, and a bit squeaky. “Wh-where…?” She managed, currently unphased by Viyara’s victory in their little race.

Quickly taking in what happened, Viyara muttere a barely audible curse. From her position she couldn’t see well enough where good hand and foot holds would be, which left her with two options: a) tell Juvri to hold onto the rope and then pull her up or b) climbing back down and guiding her from there. Or just shutting down the program, but she didn’t want to do that. First things first, though. Still lying on her stomach she said as calmly as possible, “Look at me Juvri and then take a few deep breaths. Can you do that?”

She nodded, a tense and quick movement, forcing herself to take a few deep breaths.

“Okay, stay where you are and keep breathing deeply. I’m coming down to you,” she smiled calmly and encouragingly. While making sure that she stayed within Juvri’s field of vision, Viyara made a few alterations to the program, including turning the safeties on at last. A second rope appeared, dangling down the side of the rock close to Juvri. And since she was still wearing the harness from earlier it took Viyara no time to secure herself ad start her quick, but careful descent towards the other woman. After all, the last thing she wanted to do was to startle her.

“Okay!” She said, still clinging to her current handholds, though it seemed her hands got more tired when she was still than when she was moving.

It wasn’t long, though, till Viyara was right next to Juvri. Turning her head, she looked straight at her and said, “You are doing very well. This happens to everyone who does rock climbing. So even without just turning off the program we have two options. A) I can guide you as we make our way up together. Or b) We can go down side by side. What do you want Juvri?”

With Viyara next to her now, Juvri felt a little more confident, and though they were on now, she had never known the safeties were off, so she reminded herself that it wasn’t real and nothing bad would happen. To her, the rock face was a metaphor of sorts - to succeed in Security she’d have to be way braver than she was, and if she couldn’t even climb a fake wall, how could she expect to be a great officer? And the reminder of that thought returned her determination to her and she said, “Let’s try to go up. I want to make it up.”

“Alright,” Viyara replied and gave Juvri an encouraging smile. “Can you see the small edge about 10 centimetres above you and slightly to the right of your left hand? You should be able to reach it.” Her voice was gentle, yet upbeat and encouraging. While keeping an eye on her, Viyara also started to map out a way up that, at this point, seemed to be the easiest for Juvri.

With a quick nod, she reached up quickly, grabbing the handhold Viyara pointed out. She was glad for the climbing chalk they had used… otherwise her nervous sweat would have her hands too slick for the rock. A fact she found herself half-hoping Viyara did not notice. “And then… that one?” She asked, nodding towards a spot for her foot, a little higher than where it rested currently.

Following Juvri’s gaze, Viyara nodded. “Yes, that’s right,” she replied with an encouraging smile. For a moment she watched the other woman climb. When she was certain that she had a good grip, she climbed a little higher herself to remain at the same height as Juvri. “How are your arms and hands?”
