Stark nodded, as cogs in the machinery of the Athena went, Karina’s actions were becoming more important by the day.

Benjamin flashed a smile to his junior officer, Karinna had always been an important part of the medical staff and he was glad that she was being recognized for it. He made a mental note to gather the other doctors for a celebratory drink or twelve.

Marishka raised her glass in silent toast to the doctor who had so recently restored her voice.

As the Captain’s speech began, Karina swallowed in nervousness. This was starting to sound more like a dressing down and she wondered if that was what was happening. As the pips were produced, she bit her lip and mentally chastised herself for her momentary thoughts. She should know better than to think she’d get a reprimand on such a time as this. But promotion just hadn’t crossed her mind. Commendation, maybe, but not promotion. As the additional collar tabs were added, she did manage to smile and nod. “Thank you, Captain. I’m just glad you all are safe.” She couldn’t think of anything else to say. Her stubbornness did deserve a reprimand, she was sure of it. But right now, she stood there, still slightly dazed and accepted the promotion with a smile.

She was definitely needing a drink or three after this.

“Dismissed, Lieutenant,” Koraia said with a wink.

For her next victim (or recipient of one preferred), Ghubari cast her gaze across the room until she landed on Delaney. “Isabel Delaney, front and centre,” she said with a gleam in her pale amber eyes.

Izzy stood hiding her brief nervous intrusive thoughts behind the mask of polite curiosity. She set her drink down and walked to the podium to face the Captain.

For a moment she just considered the security officer before she finally decided to speak again. “You’ve been with us a long while now and never once have I had reason to doubt your commitment, or your willingness to step up when needed. We’ve all been through some difficult things and I know some have been put into more difficult positions than others.” She reached for another little box and pulled out a solid pip. Holding it deftly in her fingers, she reached out and removed Isabel’s hollow pip, replacing it with the solid one. “For your courage and your dedication, I hereby promote you to the rank of full Lieutenant, with all the rights, responsibilities and privileges therein.” She reached out a hand to Isabel. “Congratulations.” Delaney had come a long way and though she was still tackling personal demons, Koraia believed she had truly turned a corner while on the Athena. And that made her a very proud captain indeed.

This though, this she could not hide. Isabel beamed in pride and she couldnt keep the smile off of her face or the tears from glistening in her eyes as she accepted the change of pips. It was hard to stand still but she did through it all, finally looking at the Captain and nodding. “Thank you Captain. Truly. It’s an honor to serve.” Then she dutifully stepped down so that the next person could be recognized.

Kaylee clapped her hands with each passing promotion. She was always happy to see crew members rewarded for a job well done. She looked over and signaled the bartender for another drink.

R’han gave each promotion a polite and respectful round of applause. What was interesting they were each identical in volume, frequency, and duration. R’han didn’t want to show favorites, mostly because he didn’t have any, but even if he did he wouldn’t want to reveal them.

When she finally sat back down next to Lieutenant Vander, she looked just the same as she had on stage. She blinked rapidly to keep the tears from falling. Her family would be ecstatic. She knew her boss was proud of her too. Her demotion and transfer to main fleet from the Marines had been one of the most devastating blows she could ever have thought possible. Izzy had had to climb back tooth and nail and prove herself time and again. It had been such a hard battle for her. PTSD, the nightmares, the stress, the internal struggles, all worked on so that she did not shame her ship and crewmates. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly before lifting her glass for a sip. Now she wished for something considerably stronger than the cocktail in hand.
