Hammor shrugged and said “No, not always. Started off in Engineering. I know my way around a power conduit and such. Operations came as kind of a secondary necessity, but they are kindred spirits.” and he laughed and looked at her. “Everyone at the Academy looked like they had been hit by by a Breen neuroblaster when I went the Enginnering route. Everyone… even most of the instuctors… took one look at me and thought ‘Security’.” He raised his glass to his lips and grinned. ” Little did they know…”

“Oh, I can imagine,” Kingston said with a nod. Preconceptions were hard things to shrug off and as open as a place as the Academy can seem it was riddled with its biases just like anywhere.

“What about you? Did you always want to be a head doctor?”

Hammor, Ops

She gave a half nod. “Yes and no. Back home I did a double major at university in exobiology and psychology. I could have gone either way, but when I decided to join Starfleet, I opted to apply for the Medical Academy. I just liked learning about the vast range of beings in our galaxy. I find trying to figure them out a fascinating process.”

Hammor nodded. “Noble endeavor.” and he paused a moment as if thinking something, and then said “I think I understand systems better than individuals. They’re just more… straightforward, I guess. Growing up, I only saw the absolute worst in anyone, so I guess that colored my vision more than I care to admit at times.”

Kingston nodded slowly. “It’s only natural. It takes time, and sometimes also some very contrary experiences for us to unlearn the things that can help us survive at the time, but ultimately may not allow us to thrive,” she said thoughtfully.

Hammor shook his head and laughed. “Okay… we are getting in far too deep a conversation for our first meeting there, Doc. I mean, I don’t know how philosophical I can get after five days in a runabout.” and he turned and faced her fully. “So… favorite vids. What are they? I’m partial to comedies and social dramas, myself. Oh, and sci-fi. Love me some Outpost 9 and The Abbey on Downton V

Despite her grin, Janna was slightly embarrassed as she shook her head. “Sadly I can’t comment because I don’t really watch anything. Am I missing much?” she asked with curiosity. She was used to the topic changes. It wasn’t that she intentionally sat down in therapist mode but she had spent many years in her field and it was a hard habit. She was just… observant.

Hammor looked at her and said “Missing much? Jeez, Doc… Are you kidding? Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles. You name it, you’re missing it.” and he laughed out loud.

Her face lit up in delight. “Well then, I might just have to rectify that then,” Janna said with a laugh. “It could be a nice chance from the universe saving and post-traumatic cases I’m dealing with during the rest of my day.” She sipped her wine feeling the slight weariness creeping in. Soon it would be time for bed for sure. “Where do you recommend I start?”
