While their first encounter had been short, it had also been deep in a way. It had been fun flirting with her. Despite the fact that Jenn was her new First Officer. The sensible part of her knew that she should leave it at that. Maybe even stay away from her for the time being. Yet Viyara wanted to get know the other woman better. And really what was the worst that could happen? It wasn’t like Jenn was her direct superior and most likely they would never work closely together anyway. At least that had been her experience so far with the First Officers on all the ships she had served on so far. And why should a ship as large as the Athena be any different. So throwing caution to the wind, she sent Jenn a message inviting her to meet in the Athena’s Lounge in a few minutes.

Without even waiting for Jenn’s reply, Viyara made her way towards the Lounge and settled down at a table close to the windows. Today she was dressed a little more reasonable than the first time they had met. She was wearing a pair of dark blue, skinny jeans, black high heels and a snugly fitting black t-shirt with a bit of black lace around the neckline. As always her hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail with a few strands falling into her eyes.

Jenn had just sat down for a quiet dinner in her quarters when she got the message. She considered it for a little while before she responded. At first she worried for a moment. It wasn’t in much decorum for a first officer to go on dates with junior officers. But then again, the ship’s Captain was married to one of the crew, and there was R’han and his wife and child as well. Satisfied that, should this go any further than simply friends having drinks every now and then, it would be perfectly alright as far as policy went, Jenn considered the offer again in a different light.

Did she want to pursue this further? Jenn closed her eyes and considered it. She didn’t know Viyara too well. It was too early to tell. Well, it was no use keeping her date waiting, regardless.

As she stepped into the lounge a few minutes later, she was pleased to see Viyara already waiting. Jenn felt a little underdressed, wearing trainers, straight-cut jeans, and a loose t-shirt with a slightly floral design on the front. Her hair was still up in a tight bun from her shift earlier that day, but she had taken out her contacts and replaced them with spectacles. “Hello,” she said with a small smile, slipping into a chair a quarter turn around the table away from Viyara’s seat.

“Hi,” Viyara replied, a wide smile lighting up her face and twinkle in her mismatched eyes. “Thank you for joining me,” she continued with the softest hint of a purr in her voice. “How are you doing?” As she spoke she leaned slightly forward, resting her right elbow on the tabletop and propping her chin up on the back of her right hand. She was genuinely interested in knowing how Jenn was feeling. Yet at the same time she couldn’t fully stop herself from flirting with her, even though she knew that she probably shouldn’t. At least she could try and tone it down a little. After all, getting involved with the First Officer might lead to complications and she wasn’t sure if she wanted that right after joining this crew. She had never stayed with anyone long, if they had a relationship at all, and so far she had never much cared how the other person might feel. Yet somehow since coming here she found that she suddenly did care about other people’s feelings and that she didn’t want to hurt them. At least not the few people she had met here and actually liked.

Jennifer smiled in return, leaning backwards to relax in her chair. “I’ve been well. Settling in here has been a lot easier than I thought it would, but also harder at the same time. It’s kinda hard to explain, I guess. The extra pips are… weird.” She fingered the collar of her shirt, which didn’t have the pips on it. But she knew they were there on her regular uniform, so it was still very odd. “You, uh, you look nice,” she added, turning the attention towards Viyara instead of herself. “How have you been?”

Wallace, XO

“I’ve been fine as well. I always find it exciting to get to know a new ship and a new crew,” Viyara replied without hesitation. Tilting her head slightly and mustering Jenn for a moment she asked, “Why do the extra pips feel weird? What was your position before you came here and on which ship?” Apart from being genuinely interested, she also hoped - as always - to have as few questions asked about herself as possible. And keeping Jenn talking about herself should help with that, while satiating her own curiosity and interest in the other woman.

“Ah, I was the CMO of the Equinox,” Jenn explained quickly, distinctly noticing how quickly Viyara turned the conversation back towards her. “How about you? Where were you before you came to the Athena?” She cocked an eyebrow and leaned forward, a slight smirk on her face. As a former medical officer, she was used to interrogating officers about details that they might not be particularly eager to disclose. She suppressed a chuckle at how much Viyara’s deflections sounded so very much like how Captain Talyn always got when he didn’t want to see his CMO for a medical check-up.

‘So much for that plan’, Viyara thought to herself while holding back a soft sigh. Instead the smile on her face became even wider and her heterochromatic eyes locked with Jenn’s bright green ones. “I was science JO on the USS Irii Suu, but that’s not very interesting. I’d much rather know more about you,” she replied sweetly. She was getting the feeling that trying to divert the conversation away from herself wouldn’t work with Jenn, but it was worth another try. Sure, there were some things she didn’t mind telling. But those were the things that Jenn would be able read in her file and thus she might end up asking questions Viyara was unable, or rather unwilling, to answer.

Jenn leaned back again, shaking her head slightly. “I’ve already shared plenty about myself, my good friend. As I recall, our conversation at the Christmas party was almost entirely centered on my story. I feel as though it is high time I got to sit back and listen to you talk about yourself. I guarantee that I’ll find it much more interesting than you think I will,” she shot back, narrowing her eyes while continuing to smile. The scientist was quite slippery, but now that Jennifer wasn’t flustered by her sudden appearance into her life, Jenn was better able to handle the conversation. She really did wish having this conversation wouldn’t feel so much like a boxing match.

Yiyara looked at Jenn for a moment, thinking hard about what she could tell about herself while the charming smile never disappeared from her face. Part of her wanted to get up and get a drink. Mostly to have more time to think, but if she was honest with herself also to have something to hold onto. But Jenn would probably interpret that as just another attempt to evade talking about herself. And if she interpreted her expression and posture correctly, that might not go over well. So she stayed in her seat and replied, “I was born and grew up as an only child on a Federation colony by the name of Sohiri. I joined Starfleet when I was 19. I studied both in San Francisco and Beta Aquillae II. I graduated with a major in biochemistry and a minor in forensic science in 2391. My first posting was on the USS Kajaani. While I was there I got my PhD in biochemistry before I was transferred to the USS Irii Suu and now I’m here.” She winked at Jenn and accidentally on purpose touched Jenn’s lower leg very gently with her foot.
