Now that the Athena was back, Viyara knew that she should find her superior officer and report for duty. But she figured that they’d be so busy with writing reports and dealing with the aftermath of their last mission, that they probably wouldn’t notice that she hadn’t done so already. And honestly, she had always found those initial meetings, well any meeting really, with her department head rather tedious. So instead she was still working on a pet projects of hers, using the science labs to her hearts content without ever having asked anyone for permission. And as self-confident as she was nobody had even questioned her presence so far. With a PaDD in one hand, she leaned slightly forward as she adjusted the flame of a Bunsen burner under a glass flask filled with a pale blue liquid. Her mismatched eyes were fixed on the flask and she seemed quite oblivious to everything else around her.

After Liam had wrapped up his report, he reached for his PaDD and checked it. According to the schedule, the Athena was due to pick up a few new officers on the space base. Among them was one for his department. He sighed then set the device to the side. With a bit of effort, Liam rose to his feet and strolled out into the general labs.

His eyes skirted from each officer as familiarity washed into his memory. This went on until his attention spotted Viyara Nazeen. Liam paused then began to quietly walk closer to her busy form. He knew the behavior well. Many times his own work consumed his attention to the point he forgot everything else.

Loudly he cleared his throat for her to hear. “I admire your work ethics, but there are protocols to follow Officer…”

He trailed off for her to introduce herself.

Her eyes still fixed on her experiment, Viyara simply held up the index finger of her left hand, indicating that whoever it was who was talking to her would have her attention in a moment or so. When the pale blue liquid in the flask began to bubble slightly, she turned down the flame a little and briefly looked over her shoulder with a charming smile. But almost instantly her focus returned to her experiment as the colour began to shift to teal; pale at first, but darkening some as time passed. “Isn’t it fascinating?” she asked softly, either not catching or not caring that Liam had intended for her to introduce herself.

Strike one… Liam thought.

The older man stood there then took a PaDD, the device powered on. He made a few finger flicks to pull up the officer’s schedules. A quick swipe removed an officer flask clean up as he tacked on a note to later add a name.

By this time, a few curious eyes started to settle on the interaction between Nazeen and him. A few officers stifled a snicker then turned away when Liam glanced in their direction.

When Nazeen smiled at him, the CSO didn’t return it or break his stern expression. He come to realize interrupting her during this experience would not work.

“It would be, if you weren’t on strike one.” Liam hoped she had heard him, but he suspected she didn’t. So he observed her experiment a bit longer.

It took a few moments for his words to register with her and then some more to fully sink in. Straightening up and shifting her position enough to still keep an eye on her experiment while also being able to see the person who was talking to her, her gaze quickly landed on the two full and one hollow pips on his collar. Apparently someone had noticed that she wasn’t supposed to be here. The only question was: Were they a high ranking science officer, probably CSO, from the Starbase, the Ogawa or the Athena? The latter would not be good. For while she didn’t care about promotions or having another reprimand added to her file - or so she told herself - she was passionate about science and about being a scientist. And if he really was her department head on the Athena, this situation could make things … difficult and a lot less fun. All of these thoughts ran through her mind very quickly and almost immediately after straightening up her most charming smile played across her face and she said apologetically, “I’m sorry, Sir. I didn’t mean to be rude. My experiment was at a very time sensitive point and I didn’t want anything to go wrong.” After the fraction of a second and the briefest moment of hesitation she added, “I’m Ensign Viyara Nazeen. It’s nice to meet you Sir.”

Liam took another moment to observe her shift in behavior. It appeared something finally clicked, and he secretly was grateful for it. He wasn’t pleased with additional paper work added to his load, but protocol were there for a reason. His spine relaxed when he let out a small, subtle breath.

“It would’ve been better to meet you in my office than here. While I admire someone passionate, ignoring protocols hurt more than help. Especially if someone mistakes your project as something else. Nothing kills progression like having to start over.” Liam chided her with logic.

“Of course, Sir. I apologise,” Viyara replied, surprising herself by how meekly she sounded. But now was not the time think about that, so she made sure to keep her focus on both Liam and her experiment.

He glanced down at his PaDD.

“You’re overdue to report in, Ensign.” The woman’s next reaction would determine how severe this turned out. His eyes continued to watch her, his posture proper and nearby. Any attempt to flee wouldn’t happen without a reaction from him.

“I’m sorry, Sir,” Viyara apologised again. “I lost track of time.” She had nearly added that she didn’t mean to miss her check-in, but that wouldn’t be entirely true and she had a feeling her new boss would be able to see right through any outright lies. And while she hadn’t been eager for yet another meeting with someone who’d clear her for duty, she hadn’t planned to skip it completely. Her plan had been to wait a little, just as much as she knew she should be able to get away with. And then she really had lost track of time while working on this new experiment. What a mess! Hopefully she’d be able to smooth things over. After all, while she didn’t care what the medical staff or even the counsellor thought of her as long as they cleared her for duty, the relationship to the Chief Science Officer was generally a whole different story. After all, if they disliked her, she’d never be allowed to do anything but the most boring tasks. She knew that from experience and it wasn’t something she cared to repeat. So while still pushing limits and boundaries, she made sure not to overstep any lines too much. Or at least she tried to do that. Till she got lost in her work and stepped out of line too much.

Suppressing a soft sigh, Viyara looked Liam right in the eyes; a warm, charming smile playing across her face. Hopefully he would accept her apology and they could move on; preferably without him holding a grudge against her.
