“Alright,” Viyara nodded. “The next thing that is important is one’s posture. Your back should be always straight and your knees slightly bent. That helps with all your movements and stabilises you.”

Juvri nodded as Viyara spoke, doing her best to demonstrate the posture. With a straight back, she bent her knees slightly at shoulder’s width.

“I practice mostly Taekwondo. So that’s what I’m going to basis this one,” Viyara continued. “It’s from a place called Korea and a types of weaponless self-defence where you use your hands, arms and feet to attack and to block. Okay?”

She nodded again, feeling like she should take notes or something. But the information was easy enough to commit to memory.

“There are a number of ways how you can position your feet. One of the basic ones looks like this,” Viyara said and shifted her legs. Her left leg was in front of her right leg, both feet pointing forward and plated firlmy on the ground. Her right leg was extended and her left leg bent with the centre of her weight being right in the middle.

Once again, Juvri mimicked Viyara’s stance, adjusting her legs so the left was in front of the right, her center of balance in the middle. However, the stance was not quite perfect. Her toes were pointed crookedly, and her feet were not well planted.

Viyara watched Juvri closely as she adjusted her stance. “This looks good already,” she said encouragingly as she crossed the small distance between them and stood right next to her on her left side, their bodies almost touching. “Just a few small things,” she continued. Bending forward, her hand hovering next to Juvri’s left ankle, she suddenly stopped mid-motion and looked up. “May I?”

Juvri nodded, watching Viyara. “My feet are in the wrong place?” She asked.

“Just slightly,” Viyara replied and then placed her hand lightly on Juvri’s foot. Once she had adjusted it’s position, she did the same with her other foot, making sure the toes on both of them were pointing straight forward.

Still standing very close to her, their bodies touching slightly, Viyara said, “If you can’t place both feet fully on the ground, which is perfectly fine, you should shorten your step a little. Stability in your stance is very important as a lot of your strength comes from there. Not to mention that it makes blocking a lot easier.”

Juvri nodded, and keeping her feet straight, firmly planted them. “Does this look better?” She asked. She didn’t really get how she put her feet was so important, but she wanted to do it right. To impress Viyara, for one, and she really wanted to know. If she kept learning from Viyara, maybe she’d get really good at it.

“Yes it does,” Viyara nodded. Instead of moving back in front of Juvri, she stayed where she was and gently touched her arms. She guided her left arm into defensive position and said, “You always want to have at least one arm up so you can block your opponents attack at all times. Your other arm you hold here for the first punch I’m going to show you.” With her arms around Juvri’s lower back, and guided her right arm so that her hand formed a fist, her lower arm was almost parallel to the ground and her elbow pull so far backwards that her fist was almost resting on her hip.

Moving away from Juvri and in front of her again, Viyara positioned herself in front of her in exactly the same way. “This is the starting point of a straight punch. So all you have left to do is extend your arm. Go slow first to get a feeling for the movement and then try to put more strength behind it,” she said and then demonstrated what she meant; first in slow motion and then with some force behind her punch.

Juvri allowed herself to be guided, holding the position after Viyara returned to her own side of the mat. In slow motion, she finished the punch, doing the movement a few times before adding force to it, pushing her fist out into the empty air. “Like this?” She asked Viyara, once again hoping she was doing it right.

“Yes, that looks good,” Viyara encouraged her. She let Juvri repeat the move a few more times, again with a little more force behind the punch. Once she felt like the other woman got the handle of it, she showed her the next punch. And then a kick. And block. They continued like that for at least half an hour till Viyara stopped and said, “You are doing really well. Do you want to continue? Or would you like to do something else?”

~Ensign Nazeen, Scientist

The practice was quite exerting, however, Juvri had more energy to spend so she said, “Let’s keep working! If you want to, of course.” She’d spent all day with Viyara, and she didn’t want to keep her here longer than Viyara wanted to be here.
