Daggum smiled and moved so he was sitting next to, but not smothering her. “See now… thats the best part. Scariest part, too; but still the absolute best. Once you let yourself realize that you don’t have to keep running… keep fighting and hiding yourself… it’s amazing how much energy you have to do whatever the f&^% you want to!” he said softly and smiled as he nudged her gently.

After nudging Daggum back, Viyara shifted her weight just enough so that she leaned slightly against him while mulling silently over what he had just said.

“When I got to that point, that was when I found what I was really good at and I really enjoyed doing. And that was like a whole new world. Maybe thats how it will work for you… maybe it won’t be. But I do know that whatever comes after you let yourself stop running and hiding will be a step up, for sure. Hell, maybe you will be the next Sherlock Holmes. ‘Lady Viyara Hammor - Royal Forensic Detective’.” and he smiled at her.

The ‘Mr.’ of Mr. and Mrs. Hammor

“I already know what I’m good at and what I enjoy. I’m not sure I’d even be here if I didn’t,” Viyara replied darkly, speaking of more than just this moment or even the Athena or Starfleet. For a few moments she was silent, following her own train of thought. Lingering for a bit on that cryptic and irritating encounter with that Michail Reese the other day. With a slightly confused expression she then asked rather suddenly, “But tell me, who is this Sherlock Holmes and why would I want to be the next one?”

“You don’t know Sherlock Holmes? Listen, gorgeous… I don’t care what planet you are from. Any forensic scientist that doesn’t know who Sherlock Holmes is pretty damn sketchy in my book.” and he smiled at her and put an arm around her. “Human literary character. For them, he is the standard all other detectives are measured against. I’ll see if I can dig you up a copy of the books. I’ve read them a couple of times… pretty good reads, actually.” and he sighed softly.

“I’ve never read much fiction, to be honest. Especially not detective stories,” she said with a small shrug. “I was always afraid that they might hit a little too close to home. But maybe now is good time to give that kind of literature a chance.”

“Look… if you want to stop running… you can. Because thats a choice. You can make it anytime you want. The only catch is… the longer you wait, the harder it gets to find those places that make you feel like you can stop. Even for just a little while. And as far as hiding goes, well… you can always not hide around me. And if it is someone or something you need to hide from… you can always stand behind me. I doubt they’d find you back there.” and he gave her a wink.

The ‘Mr.’ of Mr. and Mrs. Hammor

“There is only one person I’d hide from and he has never tried to find or even contact me so far. So I don’t think he will any time soon,” she said in a very soft whisper. “But thank you for the offer. As for stopping to run … I think I’d like that. But …” she sighed softly and then finished, “I don’t know how. You say it’s a choice, but …” her voice trailed off and without noticing what she was doing, she began to dig her nails into her legs again.

He glanced down at the movement of her hand and saw the nails and he slid two fingers under her hand and just lifted it away slightly. “Well… it is. But I didn’t say it was an easy choice. It requires a lot. One, you have to let your guard some. Not all the way all at once, but in stages. And you have to learn to let people in… and to care about them. That was where I had the hardest time. But I learned… and most of the time its a good thing. But there will be some heartache in there as well… can’t have the good without the bad, after all. And you have to learn to let yourself be happy. To not conditionalize your happiness. To just let yourself be happy in the moment for what it is without worrying about what will go wrong to mess it up.” He looked at her leg where the nail marks were and kissed his fingers and then set them on the marks. He then put his fingers under her chin and lifted her face up to look at him. His emerald eyes locked onto her multicolored ones and he said “And you have been punished enough, I think. You don’t need to hurt anymore, V … if you don’t want to.”

The ‘Mr.’ of Mr. and Mrs. Hammor

Viyara nodded silently, listening closely. Almost clinging to every word Daggum said as if it was a lifeline while looking him deeply into the eyes. After several long moments of silence she finally said, “I want that but I’m so afraid of getting hurt again. I’m not sure if I could handle that. I’m afraid that letting my guard down, more than I already have with you today, will break me in the end.” Turning her head away, she continued, “I never learned how to open up to people. How to trust. How to truly let my guard down. Or how to really let myself feel.” She hook her head a little and then added in a barely audible whisper, “The person who fathered me made sure of that.” With her teeth clenched Viyara slipped of the bed and walked towards the window. Her arms wrapped tightly around her waist. Her body trembling slightly. Clearly not caring that she was fairly visible for all the ships passing by.

Daggum watched her for a long moment in silence. There was a very short list of people in the galaxy that had done something to earn a spot on the list Daggum had in his mind of individuals who he would not hesitate to drop in their tracks if he ever laid eyes on them. But at that moment, the list grew by one line. He stood up and walked up behind her, putting his arms around her.

“V… it’s not easy, finding a place to feel good about yourself. But no matter what happened back then, you are here now. And you have people around you that will treat you right. I know it’s scary, and I know that at some point someone may hurt you again… but it won’t hurt like that, I promise. And even if it does happen… you’ll have people to help you through it. You… you aren’t alone, V… not anymore.”

The ‘Mr.’ of Mr. and Mrs. Hammor

“How can you know that?” Viyara asked defiantly while also leaning backwards against Daggum. “How can you know that it won’t happen again?” Looking at him in their reflection she continued, “I’m not exactly sure why, other than because I can tell that you can understand me, but I feel like I can trust you. And while I have already opened up more to you than most anyone else in my life, I still feel so scared. I’m scared to trust anyone. Especially when they make me feel safe. I’m scared that it will make me miss things. That I’ll stop being as careful as I should be. I’m scared that the more I open up the less control I’ll have over my life, over how I feel. And then what?” Turning around she took a step backwards and looked up at Daggum; her expression almost blank, but her eyes full of emotions.

Daggum put his hands out to his side and smiled at her. “V… let me ask you something. If you think opening up to other people will give you less control over your life… who is controlling it now? Because right now you aren’t worried about me. And you aren’t worried about you hurting you… so the only person driving you right now… isn’t even on this station. And he sure as hell isn’t in this room.” He took a step towards her and put his hands on her shoulders. “OPening up will give you more control. Because that’s when his hold starts to slip. Pain is a heavy chain to have on, I know… but I also know that the best revenge against those that put that chain on us is for us to be happy. And you deserve to be happy, V.”

The ‘Mr.’ of Mr. and Mrs. Hammor

“But he is. He is inside me. Inside my very DNA,” she exclaimed as she hugged her arms even tighter around her middle. Almost as if she was trying to hold herself together. “That will never change. So how can his hold on me ever slip? And as long as I manage too keep the memories and everyone at bay I am happy. I do things I enjoy all the time,” she continued defiantly. “Without that protection … I think I’ll break. He hurt me in every single way possible for sixteen year.” Tears were running down her cheeks again and suddenly her legs gave way underneath her. Even though she felt herself fall, Viyara didn’t even try to catch herself.
