“Hey yourself.” he said with a smile and set the PaDD aside. “Feeling any better?” he asked.

The ‘Mr.’ of Mr. and Mrs. Hammor

Viyara pondered that questions for a moment and then said, “Yeah, I think so. But I certainly don’t feel as if I have slept for five hours. I still can’t believe I crashed like that.” She rubbed her hands over her face and then nodded towards the PaDD next to Daggum. “What have you been reading?”

Daggum smiled and said “What else? Sherlock Holmes.” and he looked at her. There was concern in his eyes, but he didn’t press her.

“Of course,” Viyara laughed softly and then leaned against him as if it was the most natural thing to do. “What crime is he trying to solve?”

“Food? It smells amazing.”

The ‘Mr.’ of Mr. and Mrs. Hammor

Viyara nodded and said, “It does indeed. And I dare say we both have probably worked up quite an appetite. I know I certainly did.” She winked and brushed the tip of one finger along his thigh. She still felt a little bit queasy, but she hoped that some food would help with that.

“Food it is, then.” and he swung his legs off the bed and went to the cart. He piled a plate with meats, cheeses, pickled vegetables and flat breads and set it on the bed. He climbed up on the bed and sat cross legged near the foot.

“So why Bajoran food? You said it was your favorite. Why?”

The ‘Mr.’ of Mr. and Mrs. Hammor

Tearing of a piece of the flatbread, Viyara nibbled on it for a moment to give herself time to think. “I love the spices they use,” she replied and reached for a small piece of cheese. “And … it was the first food I had and that I actually chose after leaving Sohiri. First time I was ever able to really choose what I wanted to eat. I took an instant liking to it and it just stuck. Maybe if Vulcan food had been the first thing that would be my favourite. Who knows.” She gave a small shrug and then popped the cheese into her mouth.

“Sohiri… that a place? Or a person?” Daggum asked around a mouthfull of pickled vegetables.

The ‘Mr.’ of Mr. and Mrs. Hammor

“A planet, Federation colony and the place where I was born and grew up,” Viyara replied, her lips pursed and her brows pulled together. Dropping her gaze she reached for one of the vegetable but didn’t actually eat it. Instead she just held it in her hand, staring down at it.

Hammor chewed and watched, and then wipes his fingers off with a napkin.

“Ok… enough. Im not one to dig, but whatever is going on in that brain of yours is obviously taking you over. Spill. And don’t deflect. That’ll just irritate me and ruin the massage.” and he gave her a wink and a smile.

The ‘Mr.’ of Mr. and Mrs. Hammor

“What do you want me to tell you?” Viyara asked a little defensively as she looked back up at Daggum. “Do you want me to tell you about the times my father broke my bones? Or how his touch would make me want to crawl out of my body? Or how I always had bruises but never in places people could see? I had an awful childhood and there are very few things even about my homeworld I want to remember.” Her eyes were ablaze with anger, but beneath that anger there was also a deep pain and fear.

~Mrs. Hammor, aka Viyara Nazeen

Daggum looked at her and shook his head slightly. “You know… for someone that likes to run and hide as much as you do, you sure do keep what you are running and hiding from awful close.” He reached over and picked up a flat bread and topped it with some meats and vegetables. As he did, spoke.

“I get it, I really do. After so long your pain and fear and anger become the only constant you have. You have to hold it close otherwise you feel… adrift… lost. But see it’s actually a mirage… and a trap. The more you hold onto it, the more immobile you become. The more rooted in the past. The more defensive and closed off you become, the more you have to run to protect yourself. And the more you have to run, the more close off you get. Rinse, wash, repeat. It’s a vicious cycle.” and he took a bite and looked at her.

“You know all of this of course.” he said as he chewed, his tone matter-of-fact; like he was discussing the weather. “The countless Counselors and shrinks the Academy made you go to would have told you that time and time again. But you, like me, didn’t listen. Difference between us is I learned and decided I was worth more than giving all the power over my life to people I hadn’t seen in decades.” and he swallowed. “So I stopped. Got a lot happier. Wouldn’t go back to that for anything, either.” and he smiled at her and reached for another bread. “I’m better than those that hurt me when I was a kid. I’m better than them. Know why? Because I know that I will never become like they were. And two, I know they have ZERO control over me. Not now… not ever again.”
