Daggum looked at her and his head cocked slightly to the side and his emerald eyes peered at her for a long moment before he said “Did you ever stop to think that reason you don’t get ‘assigned to any of the big, important or dangerous missions’ is because people don’t know if they can trust you to control your impulses to seek out risk? And maybe you would get those assignments if they could? Then your risk would actually be productive, not self-destructive. That isn’t an accusation… just a thought. I’m not attacking you, V… just asking.”

Viyara tried to shrug his question of and pretend like she didn’t care either way. But she was trying to show more of herself, so said with a soft sigh, “You’re probably right. I keep telling myself that I don’t care that I don’t get any exciting assignments. That it gives me time to pursue my own projects. And that I don’t care that after six years since my graduation I’m still an ensign. And mostly I don’t. But … sometimes I do.” Popping a pickled vegetable into her mouth she continued, “I’m pretty sure the Chief Science Officer already doesn’t like me and I can’t really blame him for that. So I’m not certain that things will be much different on the Athena when it comes to assignments than it has been on my other ships. It’s my own fault.” She shrugged and tried her best not to feel upset or sorry for herself.

“Maybe… but it is also something you yourself can control. And make better, if you decide you want to. The other part is that you get better assignments the more you move up. Hell, I think the Athena is my… what?… nineteenth duty station? Something like that, anyway. Makes for an interesting career, thats for sure.” He ate a bite and drank some water.

“And here I was thinking I had switched duty stations often in the few years of my career,” Viyara laughed gently and gave Daggum a wink. Becoming more serious again she added, “I guess you’re right. I’ve never even tried to change people’s opinion of me. I never really saw the point. But maybe now is a good time to try and change that as well. If it is possible.” She was still doubtful that it would be. Not because she thought her new boss was unforgiving. But because she wasn’t sure if she could undo any damage she had already done to their working relationship. Or if she even deserved to be forgiven.

“V… you are incredible. I know that for a fact. You have an amazing mind and a great heart. Even with all of this -” and he waved generally at the room, “- I can tell that you are a good person. And good people deserve to have good things happen to them. And that means you. So let me help me help you. I want to see you out of the shadow of what your past was. Your future can be so much brighter if you want it to be. And it’s okay to look forward, V… I’ll help.”

Viyara shook her head; instantly dismissing what Daggum had just said, the compliments he had paid her. She didn’t believe that she deserved good things. Or that she was a good person for that matter. “How can you be so sure of that?” she asked seriously and looked up at him with a deep frown on her face.

Daggum smiled and said “Same way you do. When you grow up with s–t bags, you learn to spot them a mile away. You aren’t one. The math is pretty simple, when you think about it.” he rested his hand on her leg on top of the blanket.

“Besides that… I wouldn’t still be here if you weren’t worth it.” and he winked at her.

Viyara wasn’t sure how to reply to that. Yet with a small smile now replacing her frown. she leaned slowly towards Daggum to rest her head on his shoulder. She wasn’t sure if that would be okay. So she moved slowly to give him the chance to tell her not to, if he wasn’t comfortable with it quite yet.

Daggum put his arm around her and held her, resting his bald green head on hers. He didn’t speak, just let her sit and enjoy the quiet for a bit.
