The final check in on Juvri’s docket was the psych one. She headed up to the counselor’s office. At least when she was done with this one, she’d be done with her check ins. Finally. Steeling her nerves, and putting on her best calm face, she rang the buzzer for the door. Then, she waited as patiently as she could for a response.

The doors instantly parted to show a large reception area. On the back wall were five different colored doors and placed between the entrance and these doors was a large-ish reception desk. Behind the desk was a pleasant looking woman who looked up at the newcomer and smiled warmly. “Hi there, I’m Cherry. How can I help you today?”

CNS Iven

“O-oh, hello,” Juvri said, having not expected there to be a receptionist. She wasn’t sure why she didn’t expect it. Did all ships’ counselors have a receptionist? “I’m just looking for the counselor? I um, need to do my boarding check in.” She told Cherry nervously.

Cherry smiled at Juvri warmly. “Of course dear. I’ll see who we have available at the moment.” She typed away at the terminal in front of her before the left most door, which was colored red, opened and a tall man came out from it. He smiled towards Juvri and gave a small wave to Cherry. “Check-in eval?” He said softly. More of a rhetorical question since Cherry had relayed the pertinent details. “Please come on in.” He said with a wave and reentered his office.

CNS Iven

“Ye-” Juvri started, not realizing the question was rhetorical before he continued, and then she followed him into the office, pausing briefly at the door before continuing through. “I’m Ensign Dei,” she said, but her inflection was almost like that of a question.

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

“I’m Séan.” He said as he led the way into the office. As Juvri stepped into the office she would see that there was a work station with terminal and chair not centered in the room facing the door but instead in a corner where the door was off to the side. There was a couch with a chair near it, a cluster of chairs off to another side, and a couple large beanbag chairs in another corner. “Please sit anywhere you’d like. Can I get you a drink?”

CNS Iven

Juvri chose a seat on the couch. “A tea would be nice.” She replied.

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

Séan nodded as he went to the replicator and got a tea for Juvri and a coffee for himself. He returned to hand the tea to her before sitting in the chair next to the couch with his own cup. “So how are you doing?”

CNS Iven

“I am okay,” she answered cautiously. “This is my first post, after all…” she said as she took the tea. “Thank you.” Thankfully, the tea was the flavor she was expecting. A relaxing chamomile lavender.

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

Séan smiled before taking a sip of his coffee. “Are you nervous to be here? On the ship I mean, not my office here.” He asked then laughed softly at his slip up.

CNS Iven

Both, thought Juvri, but she shook her head. “Regular first ship jitters, I’m sure.” She insisted. Another sip of tea. Tea actually hadn’t been available on her home planet, a human colony world, but upon discovering it during her time at the academy, she found she quite liked it. Focus on the tea, she thought. Focusing on something relaxing would help her seem less nervous.

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

“Is the tea alright?” Séan asked as he noticed Juvri seemed to be focused on it. “I wasn’t sure what you’d like but I’ve always enjoyed chamomile. Unfortunately I’ve been so busy that coffee has been a requirement. Have you had a chance to explore the ship at all?”

CNS Iven

“It’s very good! Chamomile is one of my favorites,” she said, and then smiled. “Oh, no, not yet. I was transferred to the Athena’s crew a while ago, but I had to remain at the base. The ship was… someplace else, I guess. I’ve met some of the crew, but I haven’t seen that much of the ship.”

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

“I actually came aboard right after the ship returned.” Séan said with a smile of his own. “Ran into one of the lovely doctors in a corridor, almost literally. She was apparently going for a jog and thought it’d be empty.” He chuckled for a moment. “This is my third ship posting but the first time I’m heading a department. So far I like the people I’ve met. Have you made any friends of the crew?”

CNS Iven

“One,” said Juvri. She got the impression Viyara had quite the reputation. Séan would probably know of her if he didn’t know her. She found his story about the jogging doctor amusing. Honestly, she hadn’t done much talking to many other crew members. She found that, for something that seemed as stressful as being a department head, Séan seemed very relaxed. Then again, perhaps that was why he was a counselor.

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

“Oh?” Séan leaned forward in his seat a little and focused on Juvri. “Well that’s a fantastic start. How did you meet this friend?”

CNS Iven

“It started in a science lab at Starbase 157, actually, with a melted countertop,” she replied. “And then there was rock climbing involved…” she added with a chuckle. The idea of the event gave her some confidence. If she could rock climb, surely she could handle a little meeting, right?

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

“Ah rock climbing.” Séan said with a chuckle. “I’m finding that the crew seem to like that activity quite a bit. I find that for me rock climbing is an alright exercise but it’s very tiring because of my being a very large guy. How did the rock climbing go for you? You seem in good health so I’m guessing there weren’t any accidents.”

CNS Iven

“Oh, I lost my grip once but no, nothing serious. Viyara was very encouraging,” she told him. “I’m not sure why it’s quite so popular but I think I’d do it again… if I trusted my climbing partner.”

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

Séan kept his face neutral but still smiling at the mention of Viyara. Of course the rock climbing counterpart was Viyara. “Would you climb with her again?” He asked while keeping his tone light.

CNS Iven

Juvri nodded after a very short second of thought. “I would. She was very patient. Very kind. Despite being a little…” She smiled slightly, unable to think of the correct word. “Her overconfidence like, rubs off on me or something.”

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

Séan chuckled at that. “She does portray herself as being very confident doesn’t she? Heh.” He shook his head in amusement before changing the subject. “Do you have any hobbies or anything that you like to do in your off time?”

CNS Iven

“I like to do pottery, to read, and to hike. A hike out in nature can be really nice.” She responded, seeming much more comfortable. Her answers came more fluidly, less guarded.

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

Séan picked up on the reading. “Oh reading? What sort of subjects or genres do you like to read?”

CNS Iven

“Fantasy novels, mostly. Especially if there’s a romance in them.” She replied. “They’re just fun to read. Distracting, in a way, from all the real world stuff.”

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

Séan nodded in acknowledgement. “I could see the allure of getting lost in a good book. I’m not a big romance reader myself but it is interesting to see how an author portrays romantic interactions. Sometimes it gives insight into the thought process of the author themselves. Have you ever thought of doing any writing yourself?”

CNS Iven

Juvri shook her head. “Oh, not really. The reading is the fun part for me,” she replied. She had actually never tried writing, but it just didn’t appeal much to her. Pottery was her creation art of choice, because it was easy in a way. One could sit down with a lump and a few hours to several hours later, depending on work complexity, could have a wonderful looking pot.

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

Séan nodded his head in acknowledgement then took another sip of his coffee. “Do you have any family?” He asked after a moments contemplation.

CNS Iven

“My mom and my little brother.” Juvri answered. “He’s six years younger than me so we don’t know each other all that well. My mom is a colonist on Veuros IV. She farms food,” she said, explaining a little further.

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

Séan inquired curiously. “What kind of food does your mom farm?”

CNS Iven

“Wheats and grass based foods,” Juvri replied. Of course, theirs wasn’t the only farm, but it was one of the largest. Their neighbor had been a rancher, keeping the animals needed to feed everyone.

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

“How is your relationship with your mom?” Séan asked next. “I imagine she’s worried that you’re all the way out here. Though I’m not sure how many lightyears we are from Veuro IV.”

CNS Iven

“It’s alright. She’s very nice, always was. She wasn’t happy about me going to the academy, but she supported it when I said I was committed to it,” Juvri answered, “I guess she probably is…” It wasn’t something Juvri gave much thought to before now. She really didn’t want to think about it. “It’s near the edge of Federation space, and we’re really far from it. I haven’t been back since leaving for the Academy,” she told him. It was a mining colony, though Juvri knew nothing about the mining. It had never been her thing, so she just helped out with the food farms, and then high-tailed it off the planet as soon as she could, by going into Starfleet.

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

“I’m sorry if that made you uncomfortable.” Séan said as he noticed the shift in Juvri’s expression. “There tends to be a lot of reasons why people join Starfleet and voyage to the distant stars. Some seek adventure or excitement, others the pursuit of the unknown and knowledge, and some use it as a chance to start over or run away from what was a crappy life. I’m personally the latter. Starfleet was a much better opportunity than what I had to look forward to.”

CNS Iven

“Oh, it’s fine,” she said quickly, shrugging. Personally, she had two reasons: The pursuit of knowledge, and a chance to get away. She wanted to ask him what he meant, what he would’ve been looking forward to, but she figured it wasn’t her business, so instead, she said, “I wanted off Veuros IV, yes, but I was also wanting to learn.”

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

Séan nodded in understanding. “So you said you weren’t very close with your brother. Was it just the age difference that was the reason?”

CNS Iven

Juvri hesitated before answering. “The age difference was a reason but I don’t think it was the only one.” He was her half brother, six years younger, and they really didn’t have anything at all in common. He was well liked, she… Well, she wasn’t, really. He was very athletic and played sports with the kids his age, she was generally more studious. These days she was learning martial arts, at least.

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

“Is that something you regret?” Séan asked in an attempt to figure out how Juvri approaches relationships familial and otherwise.
