“I never seem to tire of sweets. Especially anything including ice cream,” Jenn replied, holding up the milkshake. She scratched her nose. “Okay, hmm, what else… Favorite animal from your homeworld, and favorite animal not from your homeworld.”

Viyara ate a few more fries in silence as she pondered that question. Eventually she said, “There are something like … maybe butterflies on my homeworld called kaastnea. They are about the size of both my hands. Some even a bit bigger. Their wings look like those of butterflies, but in paler colours. And the wings are always at least partly, sometimes even almost completely translucent. They aren’t insects, though. Their bodies are similar to those of small bats. Though with fluffier, cream coloured fur and small round ears. They are very pretty, but you wouldn’t want to touch them as they have very sharp teeth and claws and don’t hesitate to use them. I learned that the hard way when I was little.” Viyara laughed and shook her head before continuing, “From other planets I’d say red kites from Earth. How about you?”

Jenn listened with smiling eyes to the description, and tilted her head with thought. “I think I’d have to say… Arnaks. They’re a kind of… Fox-ish thing that some of the Colonists are working on domesticating. They’re a little bigger than a fox. Real lanky, with red and brown fur. Thin snouts,” she gestured with her hands, trying to replicate the shape of the head. “Big ears, big eyes. They are really playful, and were some of the first animals on the site to show interest in the Colonists when they arrived. And outside my Homeworld, I’d have to say Andoria’s Snow Faer. They’re a kind of furry… Blob with legs and eyes. Like Tribbles, but both cuter and less replicating. Only trouble is they can’t handle the heat. Anything over -20 and they start overheating.”

Listening closely, Viyara tried to picture those animals in front of her mind’s eye while a soft smile played across her face. “Out of all the animals in the universe, why do you like those two best?” she asked curiously and then drank another sip of her milkshake as she waited for Jenn to reply.

“Oh, well, the Arnaks I love because they’re really friendly and playful. I guess if I grew up on Earth, I’d prefer dogs to them, but I grew up with Arnaks. We usually just called them ‘naks. Another one of those ‘I have good memories associated with this,’ situations. We had a piebald nak named Poirot when I was really young, he was my favorite. He always howled along if you howled at him. It was great.” Jenn smiled again. “And the snow faer… I don’t know. Just the first animal I thought of,” she chuckled. “I guess I’m a big fan of horses too. I wish we had horses on Parvok 3. But we only had native animal life.”

With her head tilted slightly to the left; Viyara listened attentively. A little pensively even. It was nice that Jenn had so many happy memories of her childhood and her homeworld. She was happy for her. Yet if she was honest it also made her feel sad, jealous even. All those emotions she always felt when she heard someone talk about their happy childhood. And yet it never stopped her from asking people about their past. Maybe it was another form of making sure she felt alive. One that was less physical. Lost in her own thoughts, Viyara missed that Jenn had stopped talking. So for once she didn’t ask a follow up question, but remained silent.

Jenn let the silence sit for a little while, noticing Viyara was lost in thought. In the meantime, she studied the woman’s expression, finding it to be difficult to read, but somewhat troubled. “What about you? Why are kaastnea and red kites your favorite animals? Plus, which Prof. was your favorite at the Academy?”

Wallace, XO

Viyara blinked once or twice as she returned to the present. “Uhm, I think I like them in part because they are simply beautiful and yet also strong. And just imagine what it must be like to be able to spread your wings and just fly wherever you please,” she said with a soft laugh. She actually envied those animals, any animal with wings really, their freedom and ability to just up and leave. “As for Academy professors, I think the one I liked best was one of science profs at the Academy campus on Beta Aquilea II. His name was Theb Th’qikras. Andorian physicist and an absolut genius. I learned so much from him. How about you?”

Jenn listened with a nod, smiling at Viyara’s description. “Ah, I think my favorite professor was David Klink. He was one of the Biology profs, and, well, as a med student, I had a lot of bio classes. He’s really enthusiastic about the subject, and got us to do a lot of physical re-enactments of biological functions. My favorite was when we enacted a synapse. It was really stupid, but so memorable that I will never forget.”

Wallace, XO

Viyara laughed good-naturedly. “I don’t think I ever took any of his classes. What a shame!” Still laughing softly, Viyara helped herself to another fry. With the fries nearly gone, she asked with a raised eyebrow and a lopsided grin, “After we finished this” - she indicated the fries and their milkshakes - “how do you feel about going somewhere else?”

Jenn nodded. “Sounds like you spent some time in non-earth academies? I spent my whole time in the Academy on Earth, except for my cadet tour on the Challenger.”

Viyara nodded, “I switched from the Academy in San Francisco to the one on Beta Aquilea II after my Sophomor year.”

The suggestion to go somewhere else piqued Jenn’s interest. “Not sure. Where were you thinking of heading?” she asked. She wasn’t in any rush to be anywhere, but she was curious as to what the other woman might want to do.

  • Wallace

“I don’t have anything specific in mind,” Viyara replied with smile. “Maybe the Arboretum or the Holodeck? Partly depending on how much privacy we want and what we’d like to do,” she added with a wink before helping herself to another fry.
