Faye’s gaze drifted away again, more as a thinking habit than avoidance. =/\=I think that’s the process I’m beginning. Her being here brings up a lot of stuff I thought I had dealt with, or probably more accurately, stuffed away deep down and avoided. But the details do matter, Dag, so I’m going to answer your questions as best I know them so far. =/\= She exhaled and looked at him. =/\=I don’t have a lot of clear memories from my imprisonment. Those nine months in my memory are just one long miserable bout of pain, fuzziness and deprivation. But every now and again I would have this dream. I could hear a soft voice speaking to me quietly. Like a whisper. Most of the time I couldn’t make out what they were saying but I knew they made me feel even a small amount of comfort, which was everything in that nightmare. I now know that that was her.=/\=

=/\=I’m alive because she risked everything, including her mission, to get me safely back to Federation space. I don’t even clearly remember getting to the shuttle before I hightailed it away from the facility, but that was her doing. She got me close enough and I had to do the rest. I had to survive long enough to make it to safety.=/\= She puffed out her cheeks and blew out her breath. =/\=She came to see me when I was in the brig. Because we didn’t know what would happen and if we’d have another chance to talk to each other. If things went badly, I would either be dead or disappear. But I was not prepared for her to tell me she had been there and had worked to get me free. But more than that I was not prepared to hear that in the aftermath, after she extracted herself and got back to Federation space that she was diagnosed with PTSD and that is why she didn’t immediately come find me. Why our reunion has taken so damn long. I mean, I know intellectually, that it’s not my fault. I didn’t do anything to her. But… it’s hard not to feel responsible. A lot of this mess lately has been me trying to draw lines and not always getting it right. Drawing them in the wrong places or drawing them too solidly where things are mixed and murky.=/\= Faye shook her head, taking solace in the sight of him as she rambled about things that were so difficult to make sense of.

Daggum smiled and nodded. =/\= I hear you, Faye… it will get easier, I promise. I mean… it’ll get a lot harder before then, but that is temporary. As long as you keep putting in the work on you, things will get better. =/\= and he winked at her. =/\= And hey… she was there as best she could be, right? The effort is important there. Make sure you give her credit in here - =/\= and he he put his hand on his chest where his heart was, =/\= - when you can. Doesn’t have to be now, but when you can. You will be amazed at much better you feel. Lighter… =/\= and his head cocked to the side slightly and his eyes narrowed a bit. =/\= I like your hair, by the way. The teal was great, but I think you look even better without it. =/\= and he grinned at her.

Heat swept across her cheeks and she momentarily cast her eyes away. She could only remember one time when anyone ever said anything about her hair. And he remembered what colour it used to be after all this time? How odd. Odd but wonderful. =/\=You should have seen it when I was on the Curie,=/\= she said, tapping the side of her hand at her chin. =/\= It was to here and dyed black. Then there was the time I tried strawberry blond,=/\= she said with a laugh. =/\= I am so not a blond. Or a red head. I just felt so… weird.=/\=

Daggum smiled when she laughed. It was a good laugh, and one he never tired of hearing. =/\= Well, I think it’d be safe to say that I don’t think you could have a bad hair color. I mean, hey… =/\= and he rubbed his bald plate, =/\= … at least you have the option! =/\= and he laughed. He looked at her for a long moment, lost in thought. So far, yet right there… he thought to himself. He shook his head to pull himself from his revere and then said =/\= So what’s the future looking like for you? You said you weren’t back on duty yet, so is that going to be a while? Or do you get to get back into the Jeffries tubes and divert power all over and drive whomever got my spot nuts? =/\= and he grinned at her.

Daggum

She laughed again, the motion crinkling the corners of her eyes. =/\=Our COO, Darach, is pretty cool. Part of my system overloaded when I was working on it, in my face, I might add, and in the aftermath of that he helped me repair the junction. He’s in the know as it were and… I trust him. Because goodness knows the entire system I built is delicate as all hell at the moment. I don’t know when I’ll be back to duty, but l’m going to start doing a few hours here and there and ease myself back into it. But my job here is secure. Might be a little bit more official with the Intel stuff but we’re waiting to see how that shakes down.=/\=

Taking a deep breath, Faye dropped her knee and folded her arms on the desk, leaning in as if she could draw herself closer to him. =/\=But… I do have news…=/\=

There was a conspiratorial gleam in her pale stormy eyes and she placed a finger to her lips. =/\=It’s not official yet, but there’s paperwork in progress for me to do the Command Training Program in a distance capacity. Cochrane will serve as my Mentor.=/\=

Daggum’s face split into the biggest grin yet. =/\= Holy s&^t, Faye! That’s amazing! Congratulations! I don’t much about your CO other than what I read when I look up the Manhattan, but he seems like someone who could really boost your signal, as it were. Seems to know his stuff, too. Nicely done. Look, I know I say it a lot, but I am very proud of you. That is a huge step to the positive.=/\= and he leaned back and crossed his arms on his chest and smiled at her. =/\= Pretty soon you aren’t going to need anybody to talk to, are you? Gonna have it all figured out and leave the rest of us chocking on your dust. =/\= and he gave her a grin and a wink.

Daggum

Was it bravado? She wasn’t sure. But while her grin didn’t fade, the whirl of thoughts echoed in her eyes as she took in Daggum. =/\=Never,=/\= she said softly, pulling her lower lip in with her teeth as she pondered him. Faye shook her head. =/\=I’ve gone it alone a long time Dag, but in my heart, I’m a Tracken girl. And us Tracken folk believe in community, in sharing, in being there for each other no matter what. I may not always know how to show it, and I might say it the wrong way when it counts, but I will always need u-=/\=she stopped abruptly her lips formed around the sound she couldn’t complete and very quickly shifted it-=/\=you all to keep me steady. After all, I didn’t get here by myself, now did I?=/\= she said with an actual returned wink.

Daggum caught the unspoken word and his breath hitched for a split second and his smile broke wide and genuine. =/\= Well, you had help, but most if the heavy lifting came from you. =/\=

Letting the energy bounce around her body, Faye practiced vibrated in her seat. =/\=I’m soooo excited about this, Dag! When Alex first mentioned the idea of me being a captain one day I thought he was crazy! I mean, let’s be honest, it’s been a stretch for anyone’s imagination,=/\= she said with a laugh. =/\=But he has seen things in me I didn’t want to see, maybe I couldn’t see. And once the idea was out there it couldn’t be put back. So he asked me what I wanted to do next and I told him I wanted to apply for the program and it turns out he had the application all ready and waiting. =/\= She shook her head and chuckled. =/\=If people from years ago could see me know, Dag. Ahhh! They’d fall out of their chairs,=/\= she said, laughing more.

~Faye Calloway, Data Specialist, USS Manhattan

Daggum laughed and said =/\= Faye, I would be will to bet hard currency that anyone who has ever had the rare privilege to know you wouldn’t be surprised at all. You are, after all, a veritable force of nature. =/\= and he smiled at her. =/\= I’m glad your Skipper sees at least some of what I see in you, Faye. You’ve earned that recognition. That and then some. =/\=
