Liam took another moment to observe her shift in behavior. It appeared something finally clicked, and he secretly was grateful for it. He wasn’t pleased with additional paper work added to his load, but protocol were there for a reason. His spine relaxed when he let out a small, subtle breath.

“It would’ve been better to meet you in my office than here. While I admire someone passionate, ignoring protocols hurt more than help. Especially if someone mistakes your project as something else. Nothing kills progression like having to start over.” Liam chided her with logic.

“Of course, Sir. I apologise,” Viyara replied, surprising herself by how meekly she sounded. But now was not the time think about that, so she made sure to keep her focus on both Liam and her experiment.

He glanced down at his PaDD.

“You’re overdue to report in, Ensign.” The woman’s next reaction would determine how severe this turned out. His eyes continued to watch her, his posture proper and nearby. Any attempt to flee wouldn’t happen without a reaction from him.

-CSO, Liam J. Madison, Sci.

“I’m sorry, Sir,” Viyara apologised again. “I lost track of time.” She had nearly added that she didn’t mean to miss her check-in, but that wouldn’t be entirely true and she had a feeling her new boss would be able to see right through any outright lies. And while she hadn’t been eager for yet another meeting with someone who’d clear her for duty, she hadn’t planned to skip it completely. Her plan had been to wait a little, just as much as she knew she should be able to get away with. And then she really had lost track of time while working on this new experiment. What a mess! Hopefully she’d be able to smooth things over. After all, while she didn’t care what the medical staff or even the counsellor thought of her as long as they cleared her for duty, the relationship to the Chief Science Officer was generally a whole different story. After all, if they disliked her, she’d never be allowed to do anything but the most boring tasks. She knew that from experience and it wasn’t something she cared to repeat. So while still pushing limits and boundaries, she made sure not to overstep any lines too much. Or at least she tried to do that. Till she got lost in her work and stepped out of line too much.

Suppressing a soft sigh, Viyara looked Liam right in the eyes; a warm, charming smile playing across her face. Hopefully he would accept her apology and they could move on; preferably without him holding a grudge against her.

~Ensign Nazeen, Scientist

Liam retained an unreadable expression for several moments. The time stretched across the air like an invisible thickness in the lungs. He finally broken after she apologized, the gesture accepted on a condition. His eyes drifted over the table where Viyara set up her experiment and took stock of it. Liam cleared his throat as he broke the silence he created.

“I understood that part.” Liam sighed then continued on.

“Today, my schedule is full. Now, I want a full report on the process and what you hope to achieve with your experiment before you go much farther. Afterward, I want a detailed report over what you discovered, theories, and how it could be used.” It would keep her distracted for the result of the day and expand beyond her current project.

“Of course,” Viyara replied quickly; smile still in place. While she wasn’t thrilled about having to write a report, she also understood why they were useful and she guessed that this was his way of punishing her this time without really punishing her. So if two reports was all it would take to stay in his good books, than she’d be happy to write them.

“You have a free pass for this experiment and the cleanup. It’s only for today and under supervision. Tomorrow, I expect you to arrive at 0600 in my office for your official report-in. If you’re late, I’ll request the Chief of Security to track you down and escort you here.” The result of a scene like that would have repercussions for months among her fellow officers. He hoped it would be enough to discourage her from losing track of time for the meeting.

“Any objections to this?” He observed her reaction. She would either fight him or accept it, especially considering the generous decision to allow her to continue to satisfy her curiosity.

-CSO, Liam J. Madison, Sci.

“No Sir. I will be at your office at 0600 tomorrow morning,” Viyara replied seriously and sincerely. And yet she just couldn’t keep that charming and slightly flirtatious smile of hers off her face completely. It had become so much part of her, that she didn’t even have to think about it anymore most times. Which made it an even better wall to hide behind. “Thank you for being so understanding. I appreciate that a lot. I do love my work as a scientist and I’d hate if you thought I couldn’t be trusted with more than the most basic tasks.”

~Ensign Nazeen, Scientist

Liam listened to her comments, each word oozed with gratitude and excitement. His eyes lingered on her smile. It felt over flirtatious and plastered on, similar to a painted on doll’s face. Just enough charm to make it appealing to an individual that didn’t know better. He inhaled to relax his jitteriness as he nodded his understanding. In truth, if she had followed protocol then he didn’t have to punish her. At least the officer was smart enough not to object to it.

“Senior officer Madi.” He called over a human from her station.

The mousy-looking female pulled away and looked at Liam, her button lip bitten by her teeth. “Yes Sir?”

“Will you supervise Officer Nazeen. She’ll be officially on the department list tomorrow, but until then she’s been given access to the labs.”

“Okay,” Joie answered, her figure drew closer and observed the experiment.

Viyara held back a sigh. Not only didn’t she need a babysitter, but she also hated people watching her while she worked. But hopefully this would be the only time her new boss would resort to this type of punishment for a misstep of hers.

His solemn expression watched Madi draw closer before he gave a sharp nod and departed.

“So… what are you aiming to achieve with this?” Joie immediately asked once the CSO was out of earshot.

-CSO, Liam J. Madison, Sci.

OOC: I will switch over to an NPC for now, and we can do about 1-2 replies each and wrap this up. Then you can start officially the check-in thread. Sound like a plan?

-Janice B

OOC: Sounds good to me :) I have no idea what Viyara is actually doing and trying to achieve, etc. with her experiment and my last chemistry class was 16 years ago. So I’m not even going to try to make something up. I hope that’s okay?

IC:
“Alright,” Viyara started as she reached for the flask and held it on eye level in front of her. Without even really looking at her fellow scientist, she launched into a very detailed explanation of what she had been doing so far, why she had proceeded that way and what she was trying to achieve with her experiment. All the while she continued the experiment where she had paused it when the CSO had interrupted her. Apparently multitasking wasn’t a problem for her. And Joie would probably notice very quickly that Viyara would continue talking about all of this till someone interrupted her. Or maybe even if the person she was talking to walked away.

~Ensign Nazeen, Scientist

OOC: I’m loose with this stuff so feel free to wing it, lol. As long as it sounds possible.
-Janice B.

IC: Joi eyes watched the CSO depart, leaving Nazeen and her alone to carry on. A small breath of relief exited her lips as she returned to focus on her given task. She knew easily that Officer Nazeen didn’t want her presence, but their department head had decided otherwise. The rules were expected to be followed unless logical reason outweighed them. At least, she thought to herself, he didn’t outright favorite certain officers over others unless they earned it. No excuses made as far as she had witnessed.

Despite her derailed mental state, Joi easily clicked with everything mentioned by Viyara. It was too bad the woman sounded a bit condescending in her approach and tone. Joi swallowed her pride as she let the woman go on.

“Okay, so what are you hoping will happen when the chemical reaction occurs?”

-Senior Officer, Joi Madi, Sci. (NPC)

“Have you heard about this new element that was recently discovered?” Viyara asked curiously. “Apparently they are still arguing how to name it or rather after whom.” She chuckled softly and shook her head a little. It was something she couldn’t really understand. The discovery of something like that would be amazing enough in her opinion. “Anyway,” she continued, “so far they simply call it element ξ [Xi] and I’m trying to find out how it reacts to different chemicals and elements. Right now I’ve added bleach to it. First at room temperature and then I heated it carefully. That’s when it started to change it’s colour.”

~Ensign Nazeen, Scientist

Joi nodded, her eyes continued to observe the experiment’s progress. The element remained in a solid mass as the heat began to form on the bottom. A small wisp of motion could’ve been noted, but unseen by the naked eye. Scanners would provide better readings, but it wasn’t Joi’s duty to mention that. She mused over how a bunch of well-educated individuals couldn’t determine an unimportant aspect like a name. No one would fully remember it unless it improved the next model of warp cores.

“You think they would be more focused on determining the element’s properties than what to call it.” The woman offhandedly mentioned then popped off a few questions.

“So Xi, are you looking for a specific reaction or just curious over the side effects? What do you know of it so far?”

-Senior Officer, Joi Madi, Sci. (NPC)
