“Right now I’m mostly just curious to see how it reacts to different things,” Viyara said as she glanced briefly towards Joi before turning her back towards the liquid in the glas flask. “As for what I’ve learned so far: Not much I’m afraid. But I have collected a lot of data that I need to analyse. From just observing it I can tell that it reacts to bleach in combination with heat and I’m fairly certain that more happened than the colour change I was able to observe with the naked eye.” Straightening up, she switched the Bunsen burner off and said, “And speaking of data: I should probably clean up and get a start on that report I have to write.”

Once the heat stopped, the substance shimmered for a moment longer than died back down to its original state. Aside from the invisible heat waves, nothing appeared unusual or abnormal. Joi nodded as she listened to Nazeen’s reply, thinking she noted a hint of rejection at the thought.

“At least the report will be an easy one. You got off lucky. The last officer that did something wrong, let out Scales and wound up on habitat clean-up for months. I was happy because I got out of it, but felt bad for the guy.” Joi chuckled at the memory of the CSO walking out of his office with a feathery reptile stubbornly fastened to his arm.

“Oh, I know,” Viyara replied with a lopsided smile before adding with a wink, “And I actually don’t mind writing reports. I would have compiled the data and everything in some way anyway and writing a proper report is only slightly more work. It’s only if writing reports were the only thing I ever got to do that I’d get bored and frustrated.” As she talked she tapped a few commands into the tricorder to make sure all the data from the scans was properly saved and sent to ships computer so she could further analyse it.

“Once you’re done, I’ll show you around. Might as well kill two tasks with one stone, right?” Joi stated as she gestured for Nazeen to follow her.

“Sure,” Viyara replied with an enthusiastic smile as she began to put away everything from her experiment. Once that was done she turned her full attention back towards Joi and followed her.

She immediately led the woman to a tank filled with a lazy lizard-like creature with feathery adornment. Its head tilted toward the figures beside its enclosure, the plumage fluffed out and spread in the display. “We call this little guy Scales. He will likely be on your duty list and has a habit of escaping his habitat. When that happens, expect him to be laying on the Chief’s arm. Especially if his heater is bugging out.”

“Duly noted,” Viyara replied with a laugh as she took a close look at the creatures. Animals weren’t exactly her forte, but she didn’t mind them.

Her lips curled into a smile at the cheeky critter, its tongue peered out a bit. “I think he’s expecting a meal, want to do the honor?”

Her finger pointed to a replicator nearby. “He enjoys raw fruit and some insects, all organic.”

“Sure,” Viyara said with a grin, already heading towards the replicator. She wasn’t entirely sure how much Scales would eat, but she estimated that about the size of a dessert bowl full of fruits and insects would be fine. Returning with the shallow bowl, she asked, “Is that portion okay? And do i just put it into his terrarium?”

~Ensign Nazeen, Scientist

Joi took a moment to examine the proportion before she tapped a PaDD nearest to them. With a few flicks, she brought the feeding schedule and amounts. She smiled then nodded.

“According to this,” the woman tilted it to show Viyara the chart, “that is perfect. We feed him throughout the day with various portions, but rarely over the amount you have there. Since we’re mimicking a wild lifestyle and fruit and insects are not plentiful, we balance over time.”

With a careful movement, Joi pressed a button nearest the container and a small slot popped out. “Just put it in there and close it. Now just insert the data and I’ll finish the tour.”

She oversaw the younger officer’s actions as instructions were followed then continued showing Nazeen around.
