Was it bravado? She wasn’t sure. But while her grin didn’t fade, the whirl of thoughts echoed in her eyes as she took in Daggum. =/\=Never,=/\= she said softly, pulling her lower lip in with her teeth as she pondered him. Faye shook her head. =/\=I’ve gone it alone a long time Dag, but in my heart, I’m a Tracken girl. And us Tracken folk believe in community, in sharing, in being there for each other no matter what. I may not always know how to show it, and I might say it the wrong way when it counts, but I will always need u-=/\=she stopped abruptly her lips formed around the sound she couldn’t complete and very quickly shifted it-=/\=you all to keep me steady. After all, I didn’t get here by myself, now did I?=/\= she said with an actual returned wink.

Daggum caught the unspoken word and his breath hitched for a split second and his smile broke wide and genuine. =/\= Well, you had help, but most if the heavy lifting came from you. =/\=

Letting the energy bounce around her body, Faye practiced vibrated in her seat. =/\=I’m soooo excited about this, Dag! When Alex first mentioned the idea of me being a captain one day I thought he was crazy! I mean, let’s be honest, it’s been a stretch for anyone’s imagination,=/\= she said with a laugh. =/\=But he has seen things in me I didn’t want to see, maybe I couldn’t see. And once the idea was out there it couldn’t be put back. So he asked me what I wanted to do next and I told him I wanted to apply for the program and it turns out he had the application all ready and waiting. =/\= She shook her head and chuckled. =/\=If people from years ago could see me know, Dag. Ahhh! They’d fall out of their chairs,=/\= she said, laughing more.

Daggum laughed and said =/\= Faye, I would be will to bet hard currency that anyone who has ever had the rare privilege to know you wouldn’t be surprised at all. You are, after all, a veritable force of nature. =/\= and he smiled at her. =/\= I’m glad your Skipper sees at least some of what I see in you, Faye. You’ve earned that recognition. That and then some. =/\=

Daggum

Still smiling, she went to say something but with a chuckling shake of her head, demurred slightly. Her accepting compliments was still one of those things she had been working on with Alex but it felt… different with Daggum. They barely knew anything about each other. And yet even as that thought swept through her mind, Faye knew it wasn’t true. Her gut told her everything she needed to know. That he was trustworthy. That he, like her, had survived unimaginable situations. The difference between them was that it was taking Faye a lot longer to work through it all. But how could she expect more of herself when she had spent so long hiding?

Gazing at him intently, her grey-green eyes were shining. =/\=What about you? I’ve gone my whole life with my only ambition often being surviving or keeping my head down. But what about you, Dag? Anything you aspire to?=/\=

Daggum laughed and then said “Yeah… one day I’m gonna be an Admiral.” He said it very matter-of-factly, as if it was a certainty. “That’s my goal. If I can do that, I can say I did what I set out to do. And if I don’t make it? Well, as long as I can look at myself in the mirror and know that I did everything I could… then that’ll work, too. It’s not the destination, after all, that makes it worth it. It’s the journey to get there.” and he waited to see what she would say to that, seeing as she was on a journey of her own.

Hammor

=/\=You’ll make it,” she said, gazing at him knowingly. People mystified her much of the time but something about Daggum told her he’d make it to Admiral. The rest of it? Well it could be a hard thing to look at the whole of the journey. Somedays, especially when you were in the rough middle, the journey felt more like a pit you oculdn’t crawl out of. But she had made it out many times and knew she’d keep doing so. Still, it didn’t make that journey any easier.

=/\=You know… some days I wish the journey was just a little bit less difficult, ya know? And please don’t give me that ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ crap. Just because something shapes you doesn’t make it necessarily a positive thing. It doesn’t make it bad necessarily, but it also doesn’t automatically make it good either.=/\=

Daggum laughed and shook his hairless green head. “Naw, I wouldn’t say that. What I would say, though, is that if the journey is this hard… imagine how amazing the destination will be. Because if I have learned anything, its that the harder the road is, the more awesome that final stop is.” and he smiled at her.

Hammor Ops

She gave him a lopsided smile. =/\=Sure, but what about all that stuff about how there is no end util you’re dead. Everything is the journey, isn’t it?=/\= she countered. He wasn’t wrong and she liked the idea of there being happier and better stops along the way. It would be quite the change for her to welcome those stops rather than fear them.
