“We are both new enough on this ship, and it’s huge ship, that that might actually be the case,” Viyara laughed. “What would you do, if you found it?” she asked curiously, glancing at Jenn for a moment before letting her gaze wander through the space around them; taking in all the different plants while subconsciously also keeping track of who else was there and where the nearest exit was.

“Oh, I dunno. Maybe have a conversation with the sentient dolphins that live there?” Jennifer shrugged. “You know, if I had a nickel for each time I’d heard of a sentient dolphin people… I’d only have two nickels, but it’s weird that it happened twice,” she said, giving Viyara a wide grin. She started to walk again, glancing around at the plants until she noticed something interesting. “Holy cow, they’ve got Moon Blossoms??” She rushed over to the plant, crouching down to look at it.

Several spaces away but in plain sight, T’Pon was working on a flower bed with her infant daughter slung in a front pack sound asleep.

T’Pon

Laughing softly, Viyara followed Jenn towards the Moon Blossoms. She had never seen anyone get so excited about plants. It was sweet and made her happy. “You like them?” Viyara asked rhetorically as she watched her and it was a few moments till she noticed, from the corner of her eye, the movement of another person close by. Looking up, she saw that it was someone working on a flower bed and that they seemed to have a baby with them. From where Viyara stood and watched they both seemed happy. Between Jenn’s almost child like excitement and the parent with their child Viyara suddenly felt a wave of sadness wash over her. It felt as if someone had grabbed her heart and tightened their grip on it. Shifting her gaze towards the branches of a nearby tree, she focused on pushing those feelings away and to keep any hint of it off her face.

Jennifer nodded, looking at the plant, then at Viyara. “These things are, like, a family legacy. They were developed by an ancestor of mine,” she explained briefly. “They glow in the dark, and they’re super sturdy too.” She noticed T’Pon working on the flower bed and smiled, thinking it was sweet. Jenn reached out to touch the closed bud of the flower. “They only bloom at night, and when they do, they glow. It’s gorgeous. The ancestor who developed these, he did it for his wife. So these are alternately titled ‘Leah’s Starshine.’ Something about letting the stars come down to her, since she couldn’t go to the stars. I don’t remember exactly.”

Looking back at Jenn, Viyara managed to smile slightly. “That’s a sweet and lovely story,” she replied, for once uncertain what else to say or to do while trying to keep herself from doing something stupid.

Jenn shrugged, “Yeah,” she stood up, wiping her hands off on her shirt. There was a little dirt that wiped off. “So, you don’t seem entirely at ease here,” she glanced around. “I’m alright if you don’t want to tell me why, but would you rather go somewhere else?”

Viyara shook her head. “It’s not this place. We can stay here. I can tell how much you enjoy it. It’s just…” Her voice trailed off and she exhaled with a soft sigh. “I didn’t exactly have a happy childhood. Hearing you talk about your family and seeing a parent with their child,” she gestured towards T’Pol as she tried to explain. “It brings back memories I try hard to forget.” Not that that had ever really worked. But at least she usually felt in control. Not so much anymore since she came to the Athena and that was not only unsettling, but also scary for her.

“All the more reason to make great memories in the present, so twenty years from now you can look back and have good things to look back on,” Jenn said, glancing back at T’Pol for a moment before looking at Viyara again. “I guess I talk about my own past a lot because it’s a comfortable topic. I’m not exactly the most confident of people, so looking at the future and thinking about what lies ahead of me is frightening. It’s a lot easier for me to just focus on the comforts of my childhood and Academy days.”

Viyara nodded thoughtfully, thinking about that for a moment, before she said softly, “I think I can understand why the unknown and uncertainty frightens you. It’s the case with most people, at least in my experience.” Falling silent again, she stared T’Pol for a moment, but without really seeing the other woman with her child. Eventually she said in a barely audible whisper, “There have been things in my past that make even the most unknown and uncertain situation seem like the best place in the world. Maybe that’s why I’m not afraid of the future. Though really, I just try to live in the moment and enjoy it as much as possible.” And just like that the sadness and unease disappeared from her face and was replaced by a most mischievous grin.
