“I can,” Janna said. Her words created a reaction. “But I can’t give you the words. You named the emotion, even if you meant the opposite one. Talk about it. Talk around it. Talk nonsense if that help. Courageous. Not Courageous. Tell me more…”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

An exasperated sigh escaped Viyara’s lips. And yet she also found that she was … relieved that Janna hadn’t meant what she thought she had with the sentence ‘tell me more’. Chewing on her lower lip for a moment, she contemplated how to reply.

“When do something that takes courage … it makes me feel good … alive,“ Viyara began as she attempted to explain herself. “That’s not how I feel right now. Telling you what little I did about my past … it doesn’t make me feel good or alive. I feel like … I don’t know … as if someone gripped my heart and is now clenching their fist.“ Looking Janna straight in the eyes she added defiantly, “I don’t like it.“

Janna nodded and gestured to Viyara. “You’re a scientist. Tell me had happens to an organism who experiences a constant state of homeostasis.”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Frowning slightly, Viyara replied, “Every organism constantly experiences homeostasis. For homeostasis is any self-regulating process by which biological systems tend to maintain stability while adjusting to conditions that are optimal for survival. So as long as homeostasis is successful, life continues; but if it is unsuccessful, disaster or death are the consequence. The stability attained through homeostasis is actually a dynamic equilibrium, in which continuous change occurs yet relatively uniform conditions prevail.” She realised that she probably sounded more like an encyclopedia than a person, but she didn’t have the energy to really care.

Kingston couldn’t help but beam and she held up a finger. “Ahhh, isn’t that the key right there? Continuous change? What about organisms who are given suboptimal conditions and they lose that equilibrium?”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

“Then homeostasis would no longer be successful and that might lead to the death of the organism,” Viyara replied, her brows pulled together as she tried to figure out where Janna was going with this. What had homeostasis to do with whether or not she felt courageous?

~Ensign Nazeen, Scientist

Janna nodded. “It just might. But an adaptive organism will use that discomfort to create its own change. Sometimes it doesn’t even know that the environment has indeed changed because of homeostasis.” She held up a finger. “And hypothetically, couldn’t you go so far as to say even a positive change in variables will also lead to a new equilibrium and thus re-found homeostasis?”

~Janna Kingston, CNS (Tricky Therapist®)

“Hypothetically speaking that is possible, yes,“ Viyara agreed and then added bluntly, “I don’t understand where you are trying to go with this Counsellor. Why are we suddenly talking about homeostasis? Don’t get me wrong, I like talking about these kinds of things. And at the same time I’m rather confused right now.“
