“Then homeostasis would no longer be successful and that might lead to the death of the organism,” Viyara replied, her brows pulled together as she tried to figure out where Janna was going with this. What had homeostasis to do with whether or not she felt courageous?

Janna nodded. “It just might. But an adaptive organism will use that discomfort to create its own change. Sometimes it doesn’t even know that the environment has indeed changed because of homeostasis.” She held up a finger. “And hypothetically, couldn’t you go so far as to say even a positive change in variables will also lead to a new equilibrium and thus re-found homeostasis?”

“Hypothetically speaking that is possible, yes,“ Viyara agreed and then added bluntly, “I don’t understand where you are trying to go with this Counsellor. Why are we suddenly talking about homeostasis? Don’t get me wrong, I like talking about these kinds of things. And at the same time I’m rather confused right now.“

Janna schooled her features. “Because this isn’t this first difficult conversation I’ve ever had a therapist and I’m trying something,” she said with a wink. “And you agreed to give me the benefit of the doubt, remember? Trust me. Just a little. I’m not here to harm you.”

Viyara took a deep breath, held it for a moment and then nodded as she exhaled. “I’m trying,“ she said softly.

“I know,” Janna said, matching the timbre of Viyara’s voice.

She sat back just slightly and inhaled slowly. “So we have an organism going through changing variables in order to find homeostasis. And we’ve already established that any change in those conditions is uncomfortable that makes the organism seek safety. But we’ve also established that good things, good changes can lead to a new homeostasis. So… isn’t it possible that even the good changes are uncomfortable?”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Viyara listened closely, nodding once or twice in agreement. “I suppose so,“ she answered a little reluctantly and then half smiled, half grimaced as she continued, “I think I see where you are going with this. I’m the organism going through uncomfortable, but good change and will find my equilibrium and homeostasis again I’m the end. Right?“ She looked at Janna with slightly raised eyebrows, wondering if she was indeed correct.

Janna snapped her fingers and pointed her index finger at Nazeen. “Smart woman,” she said with a grin. “You got it.”

A single, soft laugh escaped her lips and Viyara smiled slightly, if lopsidedly at Janna. “I know and I probably wouldn’t still be in Starfleet if I wasn’t smart,” she replied with an attempt at nonchalance.

“But it’s also more than that, Viyara. All the best kinds of change? They are hard. Sometimes discomfort doesn’t even begin to describe it. And that is okay. And that discomfort you’re feeling because I called you courageous? That’s good. Because it’s a sign that you need to pay attention to those feelings. They are going to tell you the things you already know but are terrified to acknowledge. One of the things we can practice is getting more comfortable with that discomfort. To sit with it.”

Viyara listened closely, wanting to understand and take in what Janna was saying. Did she like the sound of sitting with her discomfort and getting comfortable with that discomfort? Not particularly. But she trusted Janna, as much as she was able to, that she knew what she was doing.

Leaning back so she was sitting upright, Kingston smiled, though her expression became more serious. “If you are willing to keep trusting me and my tricky ways, I’d like us to meet for a few sessions this week. I know I can help you, if you let me.”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Nodding slightly, Viyara replied hesitantly, “I’m not sure how ready I am to … to keep going , especially to go deeper. But … but since I came to this ship … things have been changing and … whether I’m ready or not … I can’t continue like this…” Her voice, already no more than a soft whisper, trailed off and she turned her head to look out over the canyon.
