Janna let silence sit between and around them for a few moments as much for her own sake as Viyara’s. “Knowing that something needs to change, is a good step. You don’t have to know what it is or how. That’s why you have me,” she said gently.

Viyara continued to look out over the canyon in silence for a few more moments. But eventually she turned her head again and face Janna once more, nodding.

“Does that mean you agree? ” Kingston asked.

“Yes,“ Viyara replied and nodded her head a little. She felt nervous, uncertain and uneasy, but she was willing to give it a try.

“Okay,” Janna said with a smile. Some patients were forced into therapy for one reason or another but it always went better for everyone if they choose to go through with it. “I have homework for you then. First, those tension balls. Keep one on you at all times. At your workstation, on your bedside table, in your pocket. When you’re feeling anxious, stressed or angry, squeeze on it.”

“Okay,” Viyara nodded, weighing the balls once more in her hands.

“Two, I want you to keep a journal, if you don’t already. And I want you to write down when those feelings of anger, or anxiety, or even happiness comes up. Anything strong enough to notice. Track your mood and write down what you were doing or thinking right before. I especially want you to make a note of anytime you harm yourself, even if it doesn’t leave much of a mark. We’re not going to do anything with it just yet. Just make observations the way a scientist would. Get curious about your own feelings. Name them, or the thing closest to what you think it was.”

At the mentioning of a journal, Viyara pulled slightly back, physically and mentally, as her mind went to the journal she had been keeping most of her life. The one she used to carry with her wherever she went so no one would find it. The one that now lived hidden in her quarters. But she nodded nevertheless. For what Janna was asking of her sounded logical and like something she’d be able to to.

“We’ll meet tomorrow in my office, at 1300 hours. Bring your notes and an open mind,” Kingston said softly with an encouraging smile.

“Okay,” Viyara said again. After a brief moment of silence she looked Janna straight in the eyes and added, “Thank you Counsellor.”

Holding Viyara’s gaze, Janna was unapologetic in her openness. “You’re welcome. We’ll find a way through this together, one step at a time. For now, focus on the small things being asked of you. And get some rest… you’re going to need it.”
