Janna studied for a moment. “What about last night. How did you sleep?” she said as she got up from her seat and moved over to her desk. She looked over shoulder. “Do’t worry I’m listening.”

Viyara hesitated for a moment and then said, “To be honest, I’ve slept better. I struggled with falling asleep and then staying asleep.” She sighed as she bit down on the inside of her lower lip.

Reaching for a blank PADD and an accompanying stylus, Janna also swung by her replicator and grabbed a glass of water. “On a scale of one to ten, ten being feeling refreshed and energetic and one being drained, where would you place last night, and also the last week?”

Setting the water down, Janna retook her seat and crossed her legs at the knee, the PADD resting on her legs, stylus in hand.

Watching Janna in silence for several moments, Viyara contemplated that question. Eventually she said, “Overall I’d rate the last week with a 7. As for last night … probably more like a 3 or a 4.” Lifting her glass, she took another small sip and waited for Janna’s reaction and next question.

“Okay,” Kingston said simply and scribbled a small note on her PADD. “Use that scale when you write in your journal too. We’re going to keep tabs on it a bit as well.” She looked up a gazed at Viyara. “You said you had a hard time staying asleep. What was it that made it that way?” As always it was a delicate balance about being direct and clear and also not asking question that were too leading. She was teaching Viyara how to find her own words to describe her own thoughts and feelings, so it was important that Janna not provide them unless necessary.

Again Viyara was quite for a moment or two, but then said a little uncertainly, “I felt a little restless, maybe, and I think I never really went into a deep sleep phase. So I kept waking up.” She frowned slightly and as she fell silent again, pursed her lips and tilted her head to the left.

“What about dreams? Did you have any last night? Or earlier this week?” Janna asked.

~Janna Kingston, CNS

“None that I can remember,” Viyara replied and shook her head. “It is very rare that I remember my dreams. Though I sometimes wake up and feel some lingering … unease, I think?” she added thoughtfully.
