Janna nodded lightly and reached for her coffee. “You said you wrote in your journal after the holodeck and again this morning. Let’s talk homework and the observations I asked you to note down,” she said with an encouraging smile and then took a sip, holding the mug in her hand for the moment.

Chewing on her lower lip, Viyara nodded ever so slightly and then placed her glass on the table between them. She then turned her journal so that she’d be able to read it, if she felt like she needed the help to remember what she had written. Which she didn’t. But she reached for the ribbon that marked the current page anyways. From her point of view, Janna would that Viyara had opened a page a little less than halfway through. The writing was minuscule and it appeared that she had used a fountain pen. She had also doodled on the pages, so that almost the entirety of those two pages was covered in ink.

Taking a deep breath, Viyara lifted her gaze to Janna again and then said, “When I was climbing yesterday, I felt happy. Relaxed. Free. And alive. I always do when I’m climbing. I felt … uneasy when I woke up this morning, but I don’t know why. At work I enjoyed feeding Scales. The rest of the shift was a little … mundane and boring.” She gave a small shrug, but kept her eyes on Janna. She seemed to calm, maybe even slightly detached. More like she was giving a status update on an experiment that wasn’t very interesting or exciting.

Mug still in hand, Janna leaned forward, her eyes searching for Viyara’s. “And right now, if you could name an emotion you feel as you read your observations, what would it be?”

“I-” Viyara started to say, but then stopped herself. She had been about to say ‘I don’t know’. but that wasn’t entirely true. Inhaling deeply and then holding her breath for a moment before exhaling again, she locked her eyes Janna’s. “Maybe a little … anxious?” she asked.

~Ensign Nazeen, Scientist

Janna gave her a small but encouraging smile. “Okay, hold on to it for a moment and get curious about it the way a scientist does. What is it exactly that’s making you anxious? And why? And keep in mind, there’s not right answer, even for yourself. And it could change.”
