“Captain Werner is a fine officer, but he’s a bit of a micromanager. He and I got along fine once I understood that he would need to be read in to any decision I made regarding the ship or crew.” Anaar squinted a bit as she brought up memories of the man. “He had a few serious OCD issues that most people wouldn’t notice in a social setting, but that were extremely obvious to me as I worked with him every day.”

“Did you and he ever discuss the matter directly, or did you make the adjustments entirely on your end?” Janna crossed her legs at the knee, leaning more on the braced arm.

One side of Anaar’s mouth curled in friendly smirk. “Actually, we did discuss it once…at least for a few minutes, before he ended the conversation.” She looked at the Counselor. “No one likes to have their shortcomings pointed out and Werner was no different. He didn’t want to debate my ability to make command decisions, he simply wanted me to follow his rules.” She shrugged here. “So, I did—at least as far as he knew.”

“Oh?” Janna asked, genuinely curious. Everyone had their way of coping with less than ideal situations and she wanted to know What Anaar had done under those circumstances.

“It is impossible and highly repetitive if everything has to be gone over twice. No one has time for that, not even the Captain. So, I took care of the things I could and never mentioned them to him. If he eventually found out…well…let’s say he’d give me a talking to in private.”

—Anaar, XO

“I can imagine that being exceptionally frustrating,” Janna said. “On the days when you’re particularly frustrated by situations, or people, what do you do?” Coping mechanisms varied greatly amongst individuals as well as within societies. Those who were psi-positive also had a different set of inputs to deal with and sometimes had to get creative.

“The first thing to remember is to breathe–deeply. I visualize my exhaled breath filled with a glittery substance, the glitter being my frustration. Aside from envisioning my frustration leaving my body, the breathing also provides a pause in the dialog. Most of the time it only takes a few seconds to reestablish my footing and control in the situation.”

—Anaar, XO

Janna nodded. “Does that work for those instances when you have less control over your empathic abilities?” she asked, her tone light and easy. Some might assume that that could be a challenge but Janna wouldn’t do so. She’d let Anaar reveal her own relationship with her abilities and how she coped.

The first officer took a deep breath, demonstrating what she’d just talked about. “No…that’s very different.” Her voice sounded a little more stressed than a moment before. “For the most part, nothing bad happens, but occasionally the emotions are so strong that …” Here, she bit her bottom lip. “Actually, Counselor, I’d like a little more time to acclimate to the Athena before I try to tackle this subject with you. You don’t mind, do you?”

—Anaar, XO

Kingston considered Anaar for a long moment, her own thoughts calm. If anything though, Janna was simply curious. “Actually, I do. Your are the Athena’s Executive Officer. You and the captain are responsible for a thousand-odd people, many of whom have been through trauma-inducing missions the last couple years. Our emotions, the crew of this ship, are going to be strong, sometimes uncomfortably. If it’s going to be that much of an issue for you, Tello, than we need to discuss it now. We don’t have to have a solution, by any means, but I cannot in good faith sign you off for duty if you are in any way unable to handle the assignment you’ve been given.” Her tone was matter-of-fact, but definitely not cold.
