Kingston shrugged slightly. “Up to you really. We can talk about inconsequential things. We can continue some of the work we were doing too. In fact, I was thinking that maybe while Daggum was here, we could finish that second homework assignment but do it together as a group. But it’s up to you, Viyara,” she said seriously. “If you feel you need a break, we can take a break. But if you feel ready to delve a little farther, just remember you’ve got backup.”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Viyara thought about that for a few moments and then nodded as she took a deep breath. “I think I’m ready to delve a little farther. And I think doing that second assignment together would be good,” she replied. She almost asked when Janna would tell her the result of her assessment and while now might be a good idea to hear what already felt like a verdict, she also wasn’t sure if she really wanted to know. After all, once she did, it would be real. Or at least it would feel more real then it already di. So she kept that question to herself and instead looked from Janna to Daggum and back again.

“Alright then,” Janna said with a nod.

“I’m happy to help however I can. And I’m free for the rest of the day, so we have plenty of time.” He looked at Janna and said “So what is this assignment?”

Daggum

“Well the first one was to relate a list of things Viyara can do for self-care. The second was to make a list of at least five things that she can control herself while she’s here in the holodeck. So I’m going to let you two brainstorm that while I go grab a couple things.” Rising from her chair, she rested her hand on Viyara’s shoulder for a moment before venturing back into the cottage.

Turning her head and placing one hand on top of Janna’s, Viyara looked up at the other woman for a brief moment. Her expression a mix of emotions. There was determination there, but also fear. Dropping her hand and taking a deep breath, she returned her focus to Daggum as she placed her thick, and well-used leather bound notebook on the table right in front of her. Her voice barely audible, she admitted to Daggum, “Janna wanted me to write that list yesterday. I couldn’t do it. It seems like such a simple task, but…” Her voice trailed as her gaze dropped to her hands holding tightly onto that notebook of hers.

Daggum looked at her and set his hand on hers, “But what? A sometimes the simplest things are the hardest to start. BUt once you do… it’s like a giant boulder rolling downhill. Takes a lot of effort to get it going, but once it’s rolling… it’s on it’s way.”

Daggum

“I feel like nothing is in my control. Not really. Even the examples Janna gave. I felt completely overwhelmed and burst into tears,” Viyara mumbled and gently extracted her hands and the notebook from underneath his hand. Only to slip her right hand in his and flipping the book open with her left. As she leaved quickly through the the pages, Daggum would be bale catch glimpses of page after page filled with hand written text, drawings and seemingly random doodling. He might even notice that the handwriting changed and the drawing got better and more detailed as she got closer to the page she was looking for. Almost as if she had used this journal for a very long time. A little over halfway through the thick journal, Viyara reached the pages she had been writing those two lists on. After a short moment of hesitation she pushed the ever so slightly closer to Daggum. On the left side he’d see a list titled “Self Care”. It wasn’t very long, but had things like “taking a bath”, “going for a run”, “grounding exercise” and even “Tai Chi” on it. Always followed by what she’d need to be able to do each item on the list. The page on the right was almost empty. Only two things were written down there (“What I eat/drink”, “What I do in my spare time”) and compared to the neat font on the other page the letters were rather messy and a few tears had made the page wrinkly in places.

Daggum smiled at the ‘Tai Chi’ and then looked at the other page. “Sooo… The other page. Thats where you’re getting stuck, huh? Ok, let’s start there.” and he scooted his chair closer to her and then said “What about what you wear? You control that, right? How you wear your hair? Small things matter, V.”

Daggum

Pulling her right foot up on the seat of her chair, Viyara nodded slightly and then rested her chin on her knee. “Normally I can control those things,” she replied softly as she reached for the pen with her left hand. “But here … my computer access is very limited right now and I’m not entirely sure what I really can and can’t control when it comes to those things,” she continued. And yet she still wrote them down in her neat, small font.
