“Hurry, quick! She’s in the office.”
“Probably freaking out.”
“Nah, she has led teams before.”
“Yeah, she is more solid than you Justin! I heard about Risa.”
“Shh. If we talk too loud, she will be able to hear.”

Good natured ribbing ensued as more and more of the security department filed in to be officially briefed by their new Chief of Security. Some of them knew Izzy well, having served under her as team lead and shift lead. Others, not so much. Either way, today was a new day. Konral had left with his wife to pursue life with her outside the Athena and Isabel Delaney, former Marine turned Security Officer was now Chief of Security and in charge of them all. What was the new Chief doing inside her office? Who knew.

Delaney, CoS

Juvri was one of the last to arrive, and the half-betazoid had spent several moments pacing outside before gathering herself and joining the briefing. She had yet to meet Izzy, and now this person was the new CoS… right after Juvri had gotten used to Konral, too. What a mess… But she’d made it this far, and she had to keep going. After meeting Viyara, and knowing she had a friend in the crew, she was doing a little better, but she was still having trouble adjusting to life on the starship. She had no idea what the others were talking about, about Risa. That was before her time. But the new CoS having already lead teams was good. Juvri assumed no one would promote someone who wasn’t qualified, so if Izzy had gotten the position she must be ready for it. And so, she waited in silent anxiety with the others to see what exactly the new CoS would be like.

Justin, duly chastized, looked for any other distraction he could get and in walked the young Ensign. “And here our resident half betazoid graces us with her presence.”
“What took you so long Ace?” Lt. JG. Russel asked Dei as he elbowed Justin good naturedly. Justin overreacted, nearly falling on the floor and causing a riot of laughter.
“You weren’t worried about Delaney, were you?” asked Ensign Blu. Neither Russel nor Blu seemed disingenuous. Perhaps they too were a little concerned at what the change would mean for them.

Delaney, CoS

“Well, I-” Juvri began, but another voice picked up before she finished the thought. Ace? Does he mean me? She wondered, looking to Russel. “I um, got lost,” she said. It wasn’t the truth, but it was easier than explaining what she was doing. At least they seemed friendly. That helped to put her nerves to rest, somewhat. “Aren’t we all?” She asked them, replying to Blu.

“We gotta loosen you up Ace! You seem rather tense.” Russel commented. She looked like a deer caught in headlights and he had to wonder if that was normal for a security officer.
“Nah. I think Izzy’ll do just fine.” Blu answered her back, ignoring Russel. She seemed oblivious to Dei’s lack of confidence and just assumed it was because of having walked into the middle of the boisterousness ribbing of each other.
Justin picked himself up off the floor. “She works too hard like she has something to prove. Maybe she’ll relax a little more now that she has the Chief position.”
“Maybe.” Blu replied, turning to Justin. “She used to be a Marine. You think they ever stop being laser focused?”
“You get any sense of her Dei?” Asked Russel who refered to Juvri’s betazoid blood and hoped she would have some inside scoop.

Izzy, for all intents and purposes was relaxing in her new office, wondering where to place the picture of her family from their last visit together. It was a mass of people with her immediate family and all of their partners and children. She smiled warmly and placed it on a shelf.

Delaney, CoS

Juvri listened silently to their conversation. Yeah, loosen up. Wouldn’t that be nice? She was trying, after all. “They may be laser focused but you know she’ll be able to handle just about anything,” she said. Her discomfort seemed to increase at the implication of her abilities and she shook her head. “I um, I’m not that… sensitive in that way. I sense only emotions, and I can’t even do that all the time,” she said, shifting her stance. She was only half, after all, and she didn’t really know much about her own abilities, having been raised by humans. She usually tried not to use it at all, though often, she’d get a glimpse of somebody’s feelings anyway.

“Oh, sure, it’s all good. I just wondered is all.” Russel brushed Juvri’s lack of empathic abilities as no big deal. In fact, they all seemed as though they didn’t mind one way or another. She was one of them even if it seemed as though she didn’t feel that way. Hopefully, she will simply accept this as the way they were and feel more comfortable in their presence.

“IF she is ready for anything, we will be trained up to be the same. Though, I hope we don’t have to be quite so much of a workaholic.” Justin said.
Blu laughed. “If wanting to do your job well is considered a workaholic, I would said that I am too?”

Delaney, CoS

Juvri had to agree with Blu. “You’ve got to put the time in if you want the results.” Something her mom used to say. It would take time, but eventually she would. It took her a while to ‘acclimate’ so to speak, and the transition to the starship had not been easy for her.

Blu nodded appreciatively. “Absolutely!” Justin merely shrugged and wandered absently, trying not to look like he was lazy. Russel laughed at Justin and suddenly punched him without too much force in the arm. Several others laughed good naturedly, ribbing Justin who took it all in stride. “Yeah, yeah, yeah. I hear ya, I hear ya.”

A small grin made its way across Juvri’s face, amused by the other officers.

From one of the Ensigns, the cheer went up, “Woop Woop Star Fleet! Woop Woop Star Fleet!” Which began a rousing round of the cheer all around, arms in the air and even some bouncing.

Izzy for her part, watched after her door opened silently when the cheer went up. She smiled wide at the enthusiasm and pride her security crew had for working this job.

Delaney, CoS

Juvri did not take part in the cheer. She found cheers like that kind of obnoxious, however she appreciated that other people seemed to like them. She saw the door open, and figured that must be the reason for the security crew’s cheering. “That’s the new COS, then?” She asked one of the crewmembers next to her. But her voice was quiet, and she was unsure whether they’d heard her or not.

At the mention of the new CoS, Blu turned with Russel and immediately stopped the canned cheer for a breakout round of applause. Justin turned and whistled. Izzy laughed and shook her head.

Justin shouted, “Yeah baby! Show of that new pip!”
Blu laughed and nodded which prompted Izzy to wiggle a bit for them. A few of the other security officers present laughed and cheered.

Juvri did not seem to enjoy all the ruckus, though she tried not to look too uncomfortable until Izzy chose to end the party.

She let the ruckus happen for a minute more before waving at them. Only Justin didn’t seem to notice and had to be elbowed to stop his dancing. “Alright. I know we have had Konral as a leader for a long time, but you all know me or you will soon enough.” She said nodding to Juvri. “I don’t plan on any changes at the moment. I think Konral did an excellent job organizing and running our well oiled machine here, so let’s just keep it that way and do him proud in his retirement, shall we?”

Blu nodded emphatically. Russel gave a simple curt nod and stood partially at attention. Other officers gave acknowledgements everywhere in between. Justin did nothing to acknowledge her words. He was listening, but he wasn’t actively engaging.

At least everything would stay the same. Juvri tended to dislike changes. She caught Izzy’s nod and wondered if she was the only one who didn’t know the new COS. Though, she supposed it didn’t matter. At least she didn’t seem as scary as Konral had always seemed to Juvri, for reasons even she didn’t know.

Izzy smiled. “Alright then. I will be meeting with all of you in turn, to make sure you are happy and comfortable with your assignments and to see if any changes are indeed needed. As I said, I dont anticipate much fluctuation but I am open to changes that are necessary to make sure you feel supported in your professional environment. Before anyone goes getting nervous,” She said placing her hands in a placating gesture. “It’s just a conversation. It can last two minutes, or two hours depending on your needs and wants so don’t let that intimidate you.”

“We aren’t the intimidatin’ sort Chief!” Justin said from the back with a laugh. Most everyone agreed, but there were those that worried about their careers far more than Justin did.

“I just want you all to know that I am here to support your professional development as well as lead you on away missions. Okay?”

Delaney, CoS

That sounded pretty good to Juvri, though a conversation really made her stomach turn. Maybe she’d be last. That’d be great. Well, most of us aren’t… she though, replying silently to Justin’s statement. She wished she could be more like him, though.

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

Everyone seemed pretty ready to accept the new order and she dismissed them to go back to her office. Meetings would start tomorrow, but she left her door open and started unpacking things she had brought to fill her office. her office What an interesting thought.

“Well, I am off duty. Anyone want to go grab a drink and hang out in the lounge?” Justin called out. Blu perked up and nodded. Russel made a sound that was halfway between a sort of derision and acquiescence, in general meaning yes. Justin looked around hopefully.

Delaney, CoS

Juvri nodded a timid ‘yes’. Whether she’d actually participate in any sort of drinking or socializing remained to be seen, but she could at least follow the other officers down and hang out into the lounge, right? It was an invitation open to any there. That included herself, she concluded, and she found her voice. “I’m in.”

~ Ensign Juvri Dei, Security

Justin clapped and rubbed his hands together. “Great!” He said with enthusiasm that was infectious. “Let’s go before she wants to talk more.” And with that he led the way out of Security and towards the Lounge.

Blu took up a place beside Juvri and smiled. “Glad to see you are being social Juvri! It’s a nice change, but don’t worry about us. We seem raucous enough but honestly, we really aren’t.”

“Speak for yourself,” Justin threw back from ahead of them.

“Oh? And who likes froo froo fancy drinks and never actually has had true alcohol?” She sneered back. Russel lost it. He burst out laughing and came back to join the two women to high five Blu before jogging back around to his slain comrade. Justin for his part simply hug his head in shame and nodded respectfully at Blu’s obvious win over him.
