Viyara was silent for a moment as she stared down at her notebook. Eventually, her voice barely louder than a whisper, she said, “I guess I control when I go to bed.” After glancing briefly at Janna, she wrote that down. A smile crease had appeared between her eyebrows and she slightly pressed her lips together as she tried to not feel so frustrated with herself. For struggling with this task that should be a simple one. She knew that no one but herself expected her to get any of this right from the get go or for any of this to come ease for her. That both Daggum and Janna would tell her that it’s okay to struggle. She just found it hard to give herself that grace.
“You control where you sit, and who you look at.” Daggum put a hand on her shoulder. “You’re doing fine, V. Really. You’ll get iT.” he said supportively.
Viyara nodded slightly and took a deep breath. She was so grateful for their support and for everything they were doing to help her. But as Daggum touched her and encouraged her, she suddenly felt tears well up in her eyes again and she had to fight against the urge to get up and run away.
“Remember, there’s no right answer. just the ones that are right for you. I mean, what am I going to say, ‘Viyara that’s a terrible answer, try again?” Janna said with a slightly impish grin.
Taking another deep breath, Viyara nodded and smiled a little. “I know you are right. It … it just doesn’t feel like there are no wrong answers,” she whispered and then sighed softly.
Writing on her PADD again, Janna continued her own list. “I get to control how I wear my hair as long as it’s safe and meets regulations.” She looked upwards for a moment. “I always wondered what I’d look like with red hair.” She shrugged.

“Me too!” Daggum said in a mock-surprised voice. He looked at Viyara and smiled and gave her a wink.
“I think you’d both look great with red hair,” Viyara grinned and gave Daggum a wink in return. The truth was that she couldn’t picture him with hair at all. But she did think red would work well for Janna. Turning her head to look at Janna again she added a little more seriously, “I really think it would look good on you. You should give it a try. The good thing about hair: even if something you try turns out to look awful, you can always change it again. It’s never permanent.”
Janna pointed a finger at Viyara. “Right you are! See? Not everything is detrimental, even if a misstep in hair colour might induce a few laughs from some people.”
Viyara smiled slightly and nodded, “You are right.”
“What else do you control?” she asked Viyara

For a few moments she pondered and then replied, “I control what I write down in my notebook and how I write it. And whether or not I show you what I wrote or what to show you.” Tilting her head slightly, she added thoughtfully, “I find it much easier to think of things I can control when I’m not locked up on the holodeck. I know this is for my own safety and in my own best interest and it makes me feel like there is hardly anything in my control anymore. Especially things of any real consequence.” She dropped her gaze and reached for her tension ball, giving it a firm squeeze in the hope to dispel the feeling of unease that had suddenly washed over her.
Daggum smiled at her and said “Hey… all of this is real consequence. Everything you do and learn is going to help you outside the holodeck. And personally… I think you are doing really well, V.”
“It doesn’t feel like it,” Viyara mumbled in reply to everything that Daggum had said, her gaze still fixed on her lap and her jaw slightly clenched. Closing her eyes for a moment, she took a deep breath as she tried to ease some of the tension that had suddenly washed over her. As she opened her eyes again and lifted her head, she asked, “How does something like what I wear or what I do with my hair have any consequences in here?” Her voice was a little sharper than she had meant it to and so she quickly added, “I’m sorry.”
