She shrugged a little. “What can I say, it takes practice. Don’t think I don’t know what you’re talking about either. I mean, it’s taken me a long time not to look at every next moment and calculate how I might get hurt. To just go with it and accept that simply walking down the corridor and living my life has risk.” She leaned towards Stark. “There was a point after the accident that caused my condition where I couldn’t accept the risk. It was too much to ask. And I mentally decided that I couldn’t do it and I wasn’t sure I wanted to even try anymore. And while no one could force me try more treatments, to accept my situation and their help, sometimes other people have to step in and just do what is necessary, for our own good. So if you need me to do that for you, let me know.”

“Thank you,” he said simply and then his brow furrowed in concentration, “I’m trying to get my head around what life is like for you Janna. I mean for me I don’t fear death but I do fear dying slowly and horribly. How do you live with the thought that walking down a corridor could potentially put your life at risk? Do you have some sort of thought process for it?”

She laughed. “Other than the abject terror I have to keep at bay?” Janna shrugged. “There’s no magic formula, but I haven’t sometimes let myself believe that there is a reason for it all. If there wasn’t I think I’d go back home and live a quiet life as a therapist planetside. I don’t know how else to explain it but that I’ve been called, by the Universe, or whatever. I’m meant to be out here, and if there is a possibility that that is true, then it’s incumbent upon me to do what I can to make it as easy as possible with the limitations I have. Adding Starfleet into the mix might just be a bit of insanity but ah well, we all have our hangups, right?” she said with a grin.

“Indeed” his wry smile said volumes, “The trick is turning weakness into strength. I have coined a new word, “unsane”. It’s a word the Athena has forced on me of late, simply put, it is looking at something insane objectively, logically and coldly deciding that we’re going to do it anyway.”

Janna laughed again. “Yeah, that seems to sum it up all right,” she said before she sighed. “Though I wouldn’t say there is much logic in my decisions. I just had to find a different path to get at what I wanted.”

Patting the arm of the arm chair, Janna was pensive for a moment. “Well, I’m going to get going. But remember, asking for help isn’t weakness, Stark. If you ever need an ear, I’m around,” she said with a wink.
