“Keeping busy means you don’t have to stop and think about things more deeply, but it also means that you never actually deal with the issues at hand. Sometimes we need a measure of discomfort in order to move forward,” Janna said quietly, their peaceful surroundings continuing to make her relaxed. “Would you say you’re stuck, Liam?”

“Depends on your definition of stuck. Many people have different views on it and its meaning. Some not as accurate or confused with the actual definition.” Liam replied, inhaling a moment.

His eyes turned to her and held his position. “For me, I have to say yes. I’m prevented from doing the long list of work as the department head and unable to control if I get reinstated or not. I find this conversation wasting time and unproductive.”

It was a blunt statement, which he felt he was forced into by the unconfrontable silence. At least at the end, he managed not to ask the obvious question on his lips.

“And yet you actively find ways to prolong your discomfort. I’m quite happy to be more direct, if I feel it’ll be productive and you’d be honest with me, but you have to work with me. If I ask you purposeful questions, will you answer them?” Janna asked.

Liam let a long spell of silence stretch across several moments. Inwardly, he reflected on the choice forced upon him and his habits that actively avoided facing his own feelings. Sharing feelings wasn’t an easy thing for him, especially as a child. As an athlete, his brother and most of his casual friends failed to understand the struggles. It became even harder to share when his focus locked onto a goal and refused to let go until he had injured himself. In hindsight, he should’ve seen the destructive behavior before now.

He took a deep breath. The floral scent filtered into his lungs and became a bittersweet one. It connected heavily to his desire to stick to his habits rather than change. Showing it would only benefit in continually harming him.

“Yes, but some might be more difficult than others. I can not promise I will be immediately open or will share everything on the spot. Old habits are hard to break and these were set at a young age. If you can accept that, I’ll be as honest as possible.” Liam honestly poured from his lips.
