“And yet you actively find ways to prolong your discomfort. I’m quite happy to be more direct, if I feel it’ll be productive and you’d be honest with me, but you have to work with me. If I ask you purposeful questions, will you answer them?” Janna asked.

Liam let a long spell of silence stretch across several moments. Inwardly, he reflected on the choice forced upon him and his habits that actively avoided facing his own feelings. Sharing feelings wasn’t an easy thing for him, especially as a child. As an athlete, his brother and most of his casual friends failed to understand the struggles. It became even harder to share when his focus locked onto a goal and refused to let go until he had injured himself. In hindsight, he should’ve seen the destructive behavior before now.

He took a deep breath. The floral scent filtered into his lungs and became a bittersweet one. It connected heavily to his desire to stick to his habits rather than change. Showing it would only benefit in continually harming him.

“Yes, but some might be more difficult than others. I can not promise I will be immediately open or will share everything on the spot. Old habits are hard to break and these were set at a young age. If you can accept that, I’ll be as honest as possible.” Liam honestly poured from his lips.

“Baby steps, as we say,” Janna said softly. “I’ll honour your struggles if you can equally allow me to make mistakes. I’m just getting to know you, after all, so I’m just finding my way here too.”

Gazing over at the greenery and the flowers, Janna breathed in slowly. “before we get into anything, for a moment I want you to consider what would happen if you do share openly with me. What’s the worst case scenario?”

“Mistakes are how any creature learns. Despite my gruff appearance, I value when others can learn and grow from making them. I have only one set condition: they remain safe while doing it.” Liam acknowledged her point with his own.

He quieted when she asked him to consider the worst case scenario. Like a swarm of fish, thoughts and scenarios surfaced into his attention. Mostly natural ones brought on by natural selection and primal behaviors linked to his DNA. He closed his eyes then inhaled deeply before he exhaled the budding anxiety out. LB wiggled a bit in response, but quickly settled down once more. Dr. Grey and him had discovered certain triggers when it came to the parasite. Especially those related to the flight or fight behaviors.

“You don’t react as I expected. I become upset or fearful and LB reacts, possibly burning you or the bench by accident.” He waited, his biggest fear set out and displayed to the Counselor. While it hasn’t happened, he worried it was only a matter of time.

“That would definitely be an interesting end to this session,” Janna deadpanned. “But what if I told you I was willing to take the risk, because I believe in your ability to overcome this particular challenge?”
