Viyara nodded slightly. Benjamin’s gentle voice and the way he reacted and treated her made some of the fear slip away. “I have. Doctor Kingston and I have been talking about a lot of things.” Dropping her gaze for maybe a heartbeat or two, she was silent for that brief moment and then added a little hesitantly, “Something I do on purpose. Like going to the holodeck and turning the safeties off. It .... the rush of adrenaline makes me feel alive. But when I hurt myself … it often isn’t intentional, I think. It’s more like a reflex when I get upset or overwhelmed.” Her voice was very soft when she said those things and she suddenly felt tears well up in her eyes, she turned her face away.

Benjamin listened intently, It had been some time since he’d squatted like this but he felt comfortable still “Well having that ball handy can help overcome bad habits like the scratching but a holodeck without safeties is dangerous. Have you managed to override the safeties whilst onboard here?” He asked in the same soft gentle voice. He knew from experience that it helped alleviate a lot of tension in his patients.

Brushing her tears away, Viyara turned her head to look at Benjamin again and nodded. “Several times actually,” she admitted. “Do you remember the bruise on my hip when I came in for my medical evaluation? I got that when I was rock climbing on the holodeck with the safeties off. I know it’s dangerous, but …” Her voice trailed off and she looked a little guilty and once again there was fear in her differently coloured eyes.

Benjamin nodded, it fit in with what he’d already surmised about her injury. He moved his hands to his thighs and asked “How? I mean how do you deactivate the safeties. The Security protocols may differ but as a junior officer you shouldn’t be able” He said with a slight smile “The decision will be Janna’s but I think a start with making certain that you can’t deactivate them would be good”

Dr. Grey - CMO

Hoping that it would be okay to sit up, Viyara shifted seemingly effortlessly into a sitting position without using her arms to push herself . She then turned ninety degrees so that she was was facing Dr. Grey; her feet planted on the couch and her knees hugged tightly to her chest. With her chin resting on her bare knees and her arms wrapped around her legs, she looked at him for a moment. A hint of confusion in her expression. “It’s very simple, really,” she finally said, a little defiantly, before glancing briefly towards the kitchen were Janna and Daggum were.

Ben gave a short snort of laughter “I suppose it is” He put his hands through his hair as he considered what to say “Physically you’re fine. I’ll have to go through your neurological readings in Sickbay but you are healthy” He placed both hands together on the bed “But I don’t think you’re OK and I think you know that. Out there in the hall, you have a very talented counsellor you can be candid with and a man who cares for you.” He turned his head to the door “And I know a thing or two about self destructive tendencies and you can speak with me if you want to.”

Dr. Grey - CMO

“Thank you Doctor Grey,” Viyara replied sincerely and looked him deeply in the eyes. “I thought I was okay. Or kept telling myself I was okay anyway. But …” She sighed softly and shook her head. “I’m not. But I hope that, eventually, I will be. I wanna get better and I’m grateful for the support I’m getting from you, Doctor Kingston and Daggum. I just wish it wasn’t necessary.”

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Janna put the kettle on and grabbed the coffee. She gazed at Daggum for a long moment. “You’ve been handling this quite well. Is that genuine or a brave front?”

Daggum looked at her quizzically for a moment and then said “I’m not sure I understand what you mean. If you are asking if I’m faking something, I can honestly say no. I am concerned for V… but I also have a lot of confidence in her ability to move through this process. She is a hell of a lot stronger than she gives herself credit for… and sometimes people just need a steady arm to help them find that inner strength. And if that is what she needs from me, thats what she gets.” and he smiled.
