Hoping that it would be okay to sit up, Viyara shifted seemingly effortlessly into a sitting position without using her arms to push herself . She then turned ninety degrees so that she was was facing Dr. Grey; her feet planted on the couch and her knees hugged tightly to her chest. With her chin resting on her bare knees and her arms wrapped around her legs, she looked at him for a moment. A hint of confusion in her expression. “It’s very simple, really,” she finally said, a little defiantly, before glancing briefly towards the kitchen were Janna and Daggum were.

Ben gave a short snort of laughter “I suppose it is” He put his hands through his hair as he considered what to say “Physically you’re fine. I’ll have to go through your neurological readings in Sickbay but you are healthy” He placed both hands together on the bed “But I don’t think you’re OK and I think you know that. Out there in the hall, you have a very talented counsellor you can be candid with and a man who cares for you.” He turned his head to the door “And I know a thing or two about self destructive tendencies and you can speak with me if you want to.”

Dr. Grey - CMO

“Thank you Doctor Grey,” Viyara replied sincerely and looked him deeply in the eyes. “I thought I was okay. Or kept telling myself I was okay anyway. But …” She sighed softly and shook her head. “I’m not. But I hope that, eventually, I will be. I wanna get better and I’m grateful for the support I’m getting from you, Doctor Kingston and Daggum. I just wish it wasn’t necessary.”

Ben put an arm on the woman shoulder and squeezed gently “And someday mayhaps it won’t be” He released her shoulder and stood up “I’m gonna go out there, I can smell the coffee and could use a cuppa. You come when yer ready” He grabbed the rest of his medical devices and put them in the bag before nodding to Viyara and leaving the room.

“Okay,” Viyara nodded. A few moments after Ben had left, she reached for her notebook and fountain pen and started to write and draw.

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Janna put the kettle on and grabbed the coffee. She gazed at Daggum for a long moment. “You’ve been handling this quite well. Is that genuine or a brave front?”

Daggum looked at her quizzically for a moment and then said “I’m not sure I understand what you mean. If you are asking if I’m faking something, I can honestly say no. I am concerned for V… but I also have a lot of confidence in her ability to move through this process. She is a hell of a lot stronger than she gives herself credit for… and sometimes people just need a steady arm to help them find that inner strength. And if that is what she needs from me, thats what she gets.” and he smiled.

Daggum

“I’m glad she has that. She’ll need to learn to rely on people as she moves forward and I can’t always be there, nor should she rely so heavily on me that she requires it. But BPD can be complicated. People with these behaviour mechanisms don’t mean to be hurtful, but they will test the people they love because of fear. of losing them. It’s a vicious cycle sometimes.” Janna wanted to make sure he understood where they were starting from, but of course she had no idea how deeply he knew all of this.

Bejnamin opened the door and exited the bedroom, walking without comment past Daggum and Janna and pouring himself a cup of coffee.

She smiled at Ben. “We’ll wait for Viyara and then we can share our findings with her permission,” Janna said to Ben before sipping her coffee.

About ten minutes or so later, Viyara entered the kitchen as well. Still dressed in the same very short clothes as she had been all day, she now had a large, black shawl wrapped loosely around her shoulders and was fiddling with one corner of it. “Is there still some coffee? I think I could do with something warm to drink,” she said by way of a greeting.
