In the modest space, the petite woman seemed to fit the cozy setting. She didn’t go to great lengths to decorate, but it was definitely more than the standard grey furniture and carpet. On the wall above the couch was an image of an ocean scene that could be almost anywhere and the standard grey slim arm chairs had been replaced with softer larger armchairs in a dark blue that looked inviting to curl up into. On top of the standard carpet, the sitting area was covered in a plush rug in different shades of blues that matched the ocean in the photo. On the other side of the room where she mostly worked, there was a tall leafy plant near her desk and a single silver photo frame on the corner of the desk where she could easily see it when she worked at the computer terminal. Overall, the place was warm but practical and uncluttered- much like Janna.

“Come on in and make yourself comfortable. I’m going to grab coffee and jot a couple notes from my last session before we get started. Did you want anything from the replicator while I’m there?”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

“No, thank you though. I just had some coffee. Thanks for sneaking me in.” Hammor said as he took a seat. “And I’m on your schedule, so take your time.” He shifted in the chair and found a comfortable position and then just looked at the ocean picture while Janna finished up.

Hammor, Ops

Janna flashed him a smile as she got herself herself a cup of coffee and settled in at her desk. She began typing, make quick notes about things she didn’t want to forget and notes for follow-up later. It would be enough for her to make a proper file entry later.

A few minutes, she as done and moved over, sitting in one of the armchairs, coffee in hand. Crossing her legs at the knee, she focused on Daggum. “Alright, I’m good to go. So, what’s going on?” she asked, knowing that nothing short of something serious or overwhelming would likely bring he man into her office unexpectedly.

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Daggum chuckled softly. “Well… what isn’t, might be a better way of going about it.” and he grinned. “Well… to start… I’m engaged. Hopefully we’ll be getting married in six months or so. She’s in Star Fleet, a computer specialist. Right now she is on the USS Manhattan in the Delta Quadrant. So there is that. Added to that is work… which for some odd reason on this ship seems to be much harder than anywhere else I have ever been. I mean seriously, you’ve been here a while. Who did you guys make mad?” and he smiled and chuckled again.

“So my fiance… Faye… she’s had a hard go of it in her childhood and has some medical issues of her own. Lost her parents in the war, so and so forth… but found out about a year ago her mom was still alive. They got reunited. Thats good. But I just got a call from her, Faye… not her mom… and it turns out Faye has a sister from before her mom and dad were together. And her mom just found her… well… actually her mom’s brand new husband as of a day or so ago found her. Faye just found out both things and called me. I tried to be supportive, keep her calm and relaxed… and when we got off the comms… well… I suddenly felt like I weighed only slightly less than the core of black hole. I just…” and he cocked his head to the side and blew out a shard breath. “Janna… all of this coupled with Viyara and planning a wedding and all the logistics and… I… I feel guilty for feeling like this but F^%K ME I need a break! One day… one… where I don’t have to help.” and he chuckled in a self-deprecating fashion. “Honestly, I have no idea how you do this>” and he shook his head and his shoulders slumped down.

Janna listened to Daggum’s venting calmly, even as her mind was working hard to keep up with the onslaught of details that were very new to her.

“I’m tired, Janna… just… tired.”

Hammor, Ops

“I can see that,” she said softly. “And I will help how I can but in order for me to do so, I think I need a bit more context. Tell me about you and Faye,” she said, her voice relaxed, unhurried. She wasn’t asking for specifics yet and would see what he offered or didn’t.

Hammor sighed. “We met on the Manhattan about a year ago. I was only there… what… maybe a week?… and then I got yanked back. We didn’t talk. Not once. But right after I got here, I suddenly realized that I had been missing her. A lot. So I called her and we reconnected. We talked a bit, I made her a mushroom house for the garden she had built on the Manhattan. We talked some more. She had a really hard time, dealt with some very dangerous people, came through that a lot stronger. But it wasn’t without some pain. I don’t really know how much I’m allowed to tell you, sorry. Anyway… we talked and spoke more and more often; and that spark we had on the Manhattan kept growing. I told her about what happened between Viyara and I, and the XO… and she told me about a guy she had on the Manhattan and how that went sideways. Then we talked about something that happened to her in her past… with an Orion. It was… brutal. But not violent. Much different than my experience on Orion but not a good one, either. She explained that is why she had always had a bit of an issue with her feelings towards me… but she had worked through that with help form the Counselor there and her family. We decided to meet up again. Spent a week together… and it was amazing. And I asked her to marry me. In front of her mom. And she said yes. So… there we are. That is the very condensed version of events. The interpersonal stuff is a whole other thing…”

Daggum

Janna struggled to follow just a little bit because there was clearly a great deal in the unsaid, in the spaces between highlighted events. yes, she was missing a ton of info, but whether it was crucial information yet she didn’t know. “You’re overwhelmed, clearly. And you’re about to get married, which is a major life changing event. Since Faye isn’t here, and from what you’ve told me you’ve not spent a great deal of time together, that dealing with a long distance relationship alone is a lot. There are some unique challenges. How have you two been handling the distance?”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Daggum smiled slightly and said “As best as we can. We have our scheduled calls, of course. But we also have a code set up… a duress word or phrase that we can send to the other that means ‘I need to talk right now, it’s important.’. That can be anything from a big issue to a simple bad day and just need that connection, you know? And we keep our thoughts recorded and share those sometimes. Especially with the wedding plans. Tying to stay on the same page and such. It’s not ideal… and it’s really hard… but we are managing the best we can. Fortunately for us, distance isn’t really an issue. We’ve spent most of our lives far from those we care most about… this isn’t even that hard because we know it’s temporary.”
