Daggum looked around at the assembled crew. “Listen… gather up all the supplies we have and get them inside the clubhouse. Inventory everything and see what we can use.” He turned and looked at Maui and Kane. “And you two… you better step up and tell us everything you know about this place, this simulation, and this Ares.” He turned and began grabbing supplies and carrying them inside.

Maui followed along. “The planet and topography are real, between us we can remake things in whatever way we see fit, but then so can Ares. In that, this is not a simulation, it’s real. The EDOC stores energy we can use for that purpose. It is of paramount importance that Ares doesn’t get the chance to tap into it. He longs for the glory days and tactically he likes grandiose gestures like that…” He pointed to the name emblazoned on the mountain. “He thinks that awe and fear serve him better as a source of empowerment”.

It took a few moments for Daggum’s words to fully register with Viyara. Apparently her attempt to stay present had been working as well as she had hoped. Letting go of her forearms, her nails left red crescent marks behind on her pale skin. A few of them even seemed to bleed slightly. But as she didn’t look at her arms after relaxing her grip, the scientist hadn’t even noticed that. Instead she took a deep breath and gave Daggum a nod before she started help gathering up all their belongings. It was almost as if his command had acted like a wake-up call. Though how present she really was mentally, was a different question. But she did what she was told quickly and efficiently and right now that was what mattered most.

As they moved towards the volcano Kane led the way. “We can assist you in helping us with the fight if that is what you intend to do but it would help if we knew in what way you would prefer to be helped. The power stored in the EDOC is available to us to enhance you with weapons and armour, to make you perhaps faster, stronger but our ability to concentrate on giving you that sort of power will mean we ourselves need to concentrate on doing so which limits how much we can do for each of you individually”.

Maui looked at Janna, “We can also help the healing process should that become necessary”.

Janna all but stared back at Maui with nothing less than defiant fear. She was all too aware that she was a liability in this instance, but leaving her behind was not an option. She nodded. “Well, then, we better go.”

It took the better part of the rest of the day to ascend the summit but eventually they walked into a flat clearing on the side of the volcano. The scene was one of quiet preparation as a number of people who looked like they were related to Kane made preparations for war.

If the situation weren’t so dire, Janna would stop to admire the scenery more. It was actually very lovely. So much for her vacation.

One young woman with a shaved head rushed to Kane’s side, “Father, we are ready. They have not been able to breach the door into the mountain yet but I fear they will do so soon.”

“Then we will stop them Pele, where are your sisters?”

“They await us near the door Father, we must hurry”.

Kane led the way further up the mountain until finally they saw three other young woman hiding behind a rock who beckoned towards them.

“Tell me what you see Lilinoe’ Kane said to one of them in a whisper.

“They are many Father, Sphinx leads 5 Chimera and a Siren”

One of the other woman snorted, “We will destroy them”, she noticed Hammor, “You fight with me” she said in a perfunctory manner.

Kane looked a little worried at that pronouncement.

“Father might object to that Laka” the daughter last to speak was grinning, “besides, I saw him first”

Laka pouted, “Shut up Poli’ahu”.

Hammor dropped the bag he had retrieved from the bungalow and said nothing. From inside he retrieved an assortment of odd weaponry and a tangled mass of leather and metal plates. Laying the weapons on the ground, he placed a short spear with a long, fine chain attached to the hilt; a curved knife made of some kind of stone joined in next in line, and then a wicked looking metal hammer. Lastly, he pulled out a round rock that was discolored in places. Oblong impressions worn into the sphere looked like they would fit a large hand. This Hammor set almost reverently last in line. Standing up, he shook out the mass of leather straps and laid them out on the ground. Stripping off his wetsuit; he was a mass of tattoos, brands, and scars all over his torso and limbs.... revealed for the first time to most around him. He lifted the straps over his head and began fastening them in a well-practiced routine. In a matter of moments he was dressed in leather straps with metal plates covering most of his vital areas of his chest, arms and legs. The straps themselves were stained dark and seemed well used. Anyone with a knowledge of the darker side of the cultures of the Alpha quadrant would recognize the gladiatorial gear the large Orion was wearing; designed to keep the wearer alive (if they were good), but allowing for blood to flow. Lastly, he retrieved a silvery-gray metal helmet with a full face plate. He set it under his arm, fastened all the weapons to various hooks and ties on the armor, hefted the stone in one hand, and looked at Kane and nodded.

Kane shook his head in bewilderment and Maui and Poseidon were obviously trying not to laugh. Kane finally looked at the others that had come with them. “We will need to be protected from the Siren’s song and the fiery breath of the Chimera. Any thoughts?”

Janna laughed in her own mind and shook her head, hands on hips. While she was as trained as anyone else, so was unfortunately stereotypically lacking in the combat department. She wasn’t the one striking out or defending strikes, she was the one that mopped up the psychological mess left in the aftermath. “Is the siren’s song auditory only or does it pierce the mind itself?”

“Auditory” Kane said, “and if we take it out quickly relatively easy to kill compared to the others.” He pulled out a long knife and tested it’s edge, “How good do you think you’d be with a bow and arrow from a tree Janna?”

Maui watched as Hammor readied himself, “An honour to fight beside you” he said quietly, “When we are done I hope you will regain us with a few stories of some of those scars”.

Hammor looked at Maui and said “I doubt you and your people would find them appealing.” ane he hefted the spear with the chain attached. “But if we defeat this Ares of yours and if your deceit doesn’t get us killed… you and Kane still owe us a vacation on an island paradise. We make it that far, I’ll tell you about them.”
