Janna struggled to follow just a little bit because there was clearly a great deal in the unsaid, in the spaces between highlighted events. yes, she was missing a ton of info, but whether it was crucial information yet she didn’t know. “You’re overwhelmed, clearly. And you’re about to get married, which is a major life changing event. Since Faye isn’t here, and from what you’ve told me you’ve not spent a great deal of time together, that dealing with a long distance relationship alone is a lot. There are some unique challenges. How have you two been handling the distance?”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Daggum smiled slightly and said “As best as we can. We have our scheduled calls, of course. But we also have a code set up… a duress word or phrase that we can send to the other that means ‘I need to talk right now, it’s important.’. That can be anything from a big issue to a simple bad day and just need that connection, you know? And we keep our thoughts recorded and share those sometimes. Especially with the wedding plans. Tying to stay on the same page and such. It’s not ideal… and it’s really hard… but we are managing the best we can. Fortunately for us, distance isn’t really an issue. We’ve spent most of our lives far from those we care most about… this isn’t even that hard because we know it’s temporary.”

Daggum

His last remark answered one of the questions that had come to mind and so Janna nodded. “What’s the plan for after the wedding?” With two careers operating in tandem she was immensely curious how the couple planned to deal with that. Starfleet didn’t always allow couples o serve together, not because they disliked it, but often because there were only so many positions on ships and if you had couples were both people were very ambitious, it could make it awkward and sometimes impossible to stay together on assignment. But he hadn’t told her much about Faye yet, so she didn’t yet know if this was an issue or not.

Daggum smiled, his pride in his fiance showing through. “Well, Faye is really good at what she does, so we are hoping… and I think it will probably work out… that she comes aboard the Athena. She has a very unique skill set, so she is demand quite a bit. Makes it easier to go where she wants. It also helps that she is owed more than a few favors, and neither of us is averse to calling in a marker if it gets us where we want to be.” and he grinned and laughed a bit.

Daggum

Janna matched his grin. “Okay, so presuming that all works in your favour, she’ll be joining you here. And it sounds like Faye is dealing with a whirlwind of her own events that naturally involve you because you love you and you care about her wellbeing. Now, let me say that anything you tell me here is confidential, with the usual exceptions of my legal duty to reveal if there is harm possible to a person themselves or to others, and in a person’s ability to do their job which may require me to discuss it with others in the chain of command. I won’t pry unless I feel I need to, but I might need a bit more context, more details to properly assess the situation you’re dealing with. You said you felt immediately weighted down after you ended the call with her where she dropped what sounds like a major bomb that she herself she had dropped on her. Tell me more about what that was like for you once you two had hung up.”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Daggum took a breath and then exhaled slowly. “Okay… first some context. Faye’s mom was missing from her for years. Faye thought she was dead. She shows back during a mission and rescues Faye from a really bad spot. Faye then goes to the Delta Quadrant, gets into a thing, and her mom shows up again doing an investigation. They get some bit of connection and reconciliation. Faye’s mom then goes off on leave and ends up getting married to a guy Faye knows… some kinda FedSec agent or something, I dunno. Anyway, the next day after that little precursor of things to come… Faye’s mom calls her and tells her that Faye has an older sister from when her mom was a teenager. A sister her mom never mentioned. A sister her mom never knew until the new hubby up and tracked her down and then brought her to see Faye’s mom. So the hits came quick and were significant. Now here I am, running through wedding plans, dealing with logistics and stuff… and here Faye calls me with the duress word and is wholly and completely understandably freaking out. So I try to help her calm down and take a breath… but in my head I’m trying to come up with reasons not to steal a shuttle and go to Terra and beat her mom to a pulp. I mean who does that to a person?!?!? Especially your kid! Give her some time to process the first change, why don’t you?!” His voice wasn’t loud, but it was raised. And his frustration was plain to see.

Janna inhaled deeply and then blew out the breath with calm purpose. “And that is a completely normal reaction to have. We want to protect our loved ones, and when we know they are already struggling, to then add to that can seem cruel. And without Faye’s mother here to explain her decision to share the additional news we can only speculate on her motives. But what do you think her motives were fro telling Faye about her sister?”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Daggum took a deep breath and breathed out slowly, mimicking Janna’s technique. “Honestly, I don’t think she’d do anything to hurt Faye. I think Shara was finally coming to terms with her life… and clearing up some outstanding issues to make sure she and Faye would be okay. Secrets suck, Doc. And the two of them live in a reality of secrecy and lies. Makes for awkward family dinners, that’s for sure.”
