Orvos donned the offered garb and moved to the sofa as well. “Oh I wouldn’t worry about that,” he said with a grin. “Since we seem to have gobs of time, I suppose we can play some 20 questions, eh? What are your thoughts about the Athena and her crew, current situation aside?”

“I’m not sure I’ve been on the ship long enough to tell,” Jennifer replied with a sigh, furrowing her brow. She felt at ease around the CE despite barely knowing him. It was likely that El Aurian charm. The listeners. “Well, I’ve been on the ship, but not as Captain. My new XO seems interesting. The whole crew has a lot of secrets that they’re all in-the-know about and I’m left pretty in the dark about. Honestly this whole ship is a conundrum I’ve been assigned to sit over. A puzzle with many missing pieces. And I know those pieces are out there, I’ve seen the mission files. I just can’t open those files and get knowledge on that mystery, which is a rather frustrating place to be in. I’m sure we’ll make new mysteries in the future, this ship has a bit of a reputation for getting into very classified situations, as far as I can tell. Don’t know what you all are doing but the brass must really appreciate your work to send us all on this… R&R, right after a shore leave.”

Orvos was grinning as she mentioned classified missions and secrets abound. So brass hadn’t filled her in on everything? It was beyond Orvos as to why higher ups kept her out of the know, but perhaps they had some good reasoning? He wasn’t positive. Orvos found the idea interesting that she certainly picked up on ‘missing pieces’. he kept quiet for the moment.

She leaned back and closed her eyes, sinking into the couch as she relaxed. “I’m trying not to worry about all the classified mission reports but I’ve got the funny idea that something in those mission files is going to be relevant in the future.”

Orvos nodded slowly, a grin still plastered to his face. “Certainly possible. I remember when I first joined this ship. I never intended on building any long lasting relationships to be fair. I’ve seen it a lot in my lifetime…people come and go…but this ship is surprisingly unique. Despite the secrecy, despite the odd happenings, there is quite a high level of trust between everyone. Given time, I’m sure you’ll see that too.” He gave a kind grin this time as his eyes met her own.

“What was your last posting like?” he added after a brief pause, moving things along.

“Just have to spend the time to get to know the crew better, right?” Jennifer replied with a small smile, her eyes still closed, face angled towards the ceiling. “I guess I’m just not sure if I’m ready for all this. I’d just been assigned here as XO a few weeks and suddenly I’m the Captain. I was just getting to a point where it seemed like most of the crew had accepted me as XO, and now, well, It’s a weird transition.”

The question was welcome, pulling Jenn away from her musings. “My last posting was as CMO on the Equinox, under Captain Talyn Sun. And man, is that crew ever a family. The Equinox is a smaller ship, a deep space scientific survey vessel built to be fast and unnoticed. It was a struggle to keep everyone alive though, because Tal really likes taking her into, shall I say… riskier situations. We did a lot of ground work, and encountered a lot of injury and illness-causing organisms. It was an adventure though, no doubt.”

“Can’t say I necessarily blame your captain,” replied Orvos as he mentally recalled the various situations he had taken the Aurora into. “Chief Medical Officer, eh? Ghubari had been more of a tactician. Perhaps this means the Athena will be finding itself in different situations then what we’re used to? What made you decide to climb up from a department head to an executive?”

“Talyn insisted that I take the command training course,” Jennifer reminisced. She smiled slightly, amusing herself with the memories. “Apparently I did fairly well, and then it was just a matter of time before Starfleet pulled me off the Equinox and put me onto a different ship. Considering all the possibilities for where I’d end up, I think I came out of it in a pretty good place.”

Orvos gave a warm grin. “It would certainly seem that way.”

She got up from the couch and wandered over to the kitchen area, grabbing some things from the cupboards. “You like hot chocolate?” she asked, glancing over her shoulder.

The fire was nice, but a cup of hot chocolate was always welcome. “Absolutely! Nothing like it on a cold day. No snow here…well yet…but still good now nonetheless!” A part of him was curious when they would get out, but the more dominant part of him didn’t care at the moment. “It’s a nice place here. Does it have a specific meaning for you? You mentioned your brother earlier, so I assume perhaps from childhood?” Keeping the questioning on her was much better for him.

Jennifer didn’t mind answering questions. She was never good at asking them, anyways. She thought about how to answer the question as she pulled mugs from the cupboard. “It’s my childhood home. I grew up here, with two older sisters and a younger brother.” She grabbed milk from the fridge. “Well, not here-here. This is a holographic representation. But that’s beside the point. Whenever I can’t really get out of responsibilities for long enough to visit home, but feel a hankering of nostalgia, I come here to rest and relax for a little while. It’s not really the same as actually going home and seeing my family, but it’s something.” She sighed slightly, thinking of little Hailey, who she hadn’t even met yet.

“I assume then your family still owns the home?” Orvos asked inquisitively. “Will it be in the family for generations then?” He waited patiently as he continued their conversation, his eyes watching the fire aglow.

“I expect it to. It’s not the home we live in anymore - Mum and Dad wanted to move closer to the rest of the colony, and into a larger home that could house a growing family, so this building was turned into a holiday home. Liz has two kids and her husband, Kat has two partners and a baby, and Jake has three kids and a wife, so that’s…” she counted out the numbers on her fingers. “Family used to be 6, it’s now… 16,” she grinned. “It’s a lot for this little cabin. It can handle about… seven, maybe?”

At this point, Jenn was fully lost in her thoughts.

Noting that it was taking quite a bit for hot chocolate to be made, Orvos stood up quietly and leaned against the kitchen entryway. “So, while you’re siblings stayed with family, you made a career in starfleet, eh?” He wasn’t trying to be accusatory by any means. However, facts did present themselves rather poignantly. She seemed lost in thought, so he hoped it would poke or prod something more of what had her attention.

“Before she settled on Parvok 3, mum was a doctor in Starfleet. She was always telling me about her time in the stars. I… wanted to get out here and explore. Didn’t expect I’d end up in medicine as well, but I turned out to be fairly good at it.”

The milk was now on the stove, several spoonfuls of chocolate flakes stirred into it began to melt slowly. “I was the only one who was restless back home. Didn’t wanna stay in one place for my whole life. When I entered the Academy, it felt like it was my ticket to see the whole universe.”
