There was space between them again and Janna couldn’t blame him either. Still, it was… disappointing. But as her mind traipsed over the words that Orvos had said, surprise etched itself into her features. “I don’t know what that is supposed to mean,” she whispered, eyes wide.

Orvos sighed inwardly, knowing she would need much more information than what he would have wanted her to know. It was too late though. She needed to know.

He put a hand on her arm and gestured for her to sit as he did so. “The Nexus is one of the strangest phenomena we have ever encountered. It’s a place that exists outside of time and being pulled from it has some extravagant side effects. The crystal you had was never meant to actually leave the Nexus. But you wouldn’t have known that, and there would have been no way, from the sounds of it, of preventing that from happening. One could even say it was meant to happen in order to right the wrongs.”

“Okay,” she said, even as her mouth turned downwards. His touch, brief though it was, sending electricity up her arm. Was it this new state or was it him?

Orvos paused before moving on, allowing her a moment to reply.

“Elements of the Nexus were a part of the crystal you had. I can’t be certain, but it seems to me that pulling it out of the Nexus caused ‘an extravagant side effect’. The Nexus is able to perceive our deep thoughts and desires and reflect it completely and totally back to us. It would seem that capability has translated itself within you.”

Orvos was full of held back emotion. He was excited, curious, nervous, and deeply concerned all at once. If he was right, she would need to understand it’s operation better. She had to learn how to use it so as not to fall victim to other’s mental states.

Janna’s eyes searched his as she turned towards him fully where they say. She wasn’t far from him and there was at once a gulf between them, and nothing. “You want to see what I can do, don’t you? But you worry what that might look like, or what might happen if it’s too much for me.”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

Orvos held his ground and her gaze. He knew Janna was perceptive. It was practically a requirement working as a counselor aboard a starship. But this new ability, as it were, would make things difficult for him to tell where that line was. “Yes, and yes,” he stated simply.

“I don’t know how others might react, so I would caution you on who you share this with. I can help, obviously I would like to. I probably know more about the Nexus than any you may come across. But that also means you’ll see more of me than what you already do. You’ll know me better than I’ll perceive. I don’t know if you want that. Tell me what you think. Do you want to know more about it? Do you want my assistance in exploring these…abilities?”

It was open ended. He would respect any decision she made, but deep down, he wanted to know more. Even if it meant him being exposed as his true self, being perceived without him having to speak a word. There was a sense of intimacy that would come with it, he knew, but his desire to know more only barely outweighed his caution at being fully known.
