Jennifer turned away from Athena and stepped over to R’han, putting a hand on his shoulder and leaning forward. “Find the thing that converts worship into power and figure out a way to disconnect it. Take whoever you think will be useful,” she whispered in his ear, then said more loudly, glancing at Liam, “Children playing with their toys. An apt description.”

“I assume my Chief Engineer has retaken the ship by now. I’d appreciate it if you could spare a second of your time and “power” to give me a commbadge to communicate with him. You know, those things you took from us because you want your toys to play their roles like good little worship batteries?”

She was tired of this game, and she just wanted to go home.

Wallace, CO

Hermes handed her a communicator seemingly out of thin air. Athena seemed taken aback by his action. “I too wish an end to this conflict. At this juncture I think I would rather cease to be than carry on at our present course towards destruction.

Athena almost snarled at him, “How can you wish the genocide of our race. The EDOC has enabled us to flourish and while people stand ready to fight for it to gain power all we have sought to do with it is form a symbiotic relationship of power bringing joy to others”.

She turned to the Captain, “You call it a worship battery, I call it the future survival of my people. How can you stand there and accuse us of such things when all we sought to do was bring your crew some happiness!” She pointed to Ares and Hades, “We would have done exactly that if they hadn’t interfered, you would have enjoyed your time, left none the wiser and this place would have been a haven for many. Is this your final judgement? To destroy our future?”

It was at this point that an orderly brought the Chief Medical Officer out to the front of the building to see the impasse and many wounded lying untended.

“I think you’ve failed to notice something, Athena. Is this the price worth paying for happiness? I believe many individuals sought this very path and the bloodshed rarely ends.” Liam widened his arms to let Athena, the very goddess of wisdom, actually gaze upon the aftermath of this little war. Deep down, the CSO started to wonder if there was deeper reasons for Ares and Hades to resist Athena than originally thought. The way she spoke, it felt like they hadn’t even discussed this at all between each other.

Despite the blood shed, he knew there was at least one reason for resistance. Who would want to forever be forced to serve another after all? Even if the outcome was noble.

“One thing I have learned in my time onboard the Athena is that happiness isn’t something you can give another individual. It is something they need to discover on their own. You can help them of course, but in the end the decision resides with the subject.” He sighed softly, a hint of pain in his eyes.

“In my opinion, I don’t think you need power or others aid in bring happiness. You just need motivation, patience, and time to achieve it.” Liam had hoped that things could’ve panned out differently. It seemed they were about to wipe out a whole race and that didn’t settle well with the man.

Jennifer didn’t like the situation. It was bad, and if they handled this poorly it could turn around and bite them. She glanced over at the CMO, then took the communicator and held it in her hand, considering the situation carefully. “Is it truly symbiotic if one party doesn’t know that they are being used by the other?” she let out a long sigh, glancing at Hades and Ares, narrowing her eyes slightly before turning back to Athena. “People, humans in particular, rarely do well with ‘all their wildest dreams’ being offered to them. And we don’t deal well with finding out that another being has been secretly using us for their own gain, even if we’re supposedly given much in return.”

She looked around at her senior staff. Well, she didn’t have much of a senior staff, but Liam, R’han, and Benjamin were here. “Now, we don’t want you folks to die because you’ve lost the EDOC, but correct me if I’m wrong… you survived before you constructed it.”

Wallace, CO

Surprisingly it was Ares that spoke, “Not all of us survived, we have lost many to lack of belief over the years. That is why the EDOC is so important and must be shared, that is why we fight not to be excluded”.

Athena hissed in frustration at him, “You and yours do not know how to share, you just take, that is why we hid from you.” She looked at Hades and her eyes turned to stone as she addressed Liam, “Motivation we have, but tell me, how can we exist together when others seek to take, how can we trust when eons of history teach us that some are not to be trusted?”

“You put systems in place to ensure that you do… laws. Rules of conduct. Treaties. Do they always hold? Nope. But at least expectations are managed.” the Ops Chief said flatly.

Benjamin was listening to the argument with half an ear, he was watching the area, looking at the wounded, trying to see why no one was carrying them out, surveilling the area.

Dr. Grey - CMO

Liam was not intimidated by Athena’s stony glare, but he was grateful it wasn’t directed at him.

“And you believe humans, Vulcan, and all other races get along perfectly?” He scoffed at the idea,” I’m sorry to say that’s not the case all the time.”

“Even in this ‘perfect’ era, there are still individuals who hold grudges, radical ideas, and still distrust others. Personally, I think the only reason we haven’t all gone to war is because we learned we benefit more from cooperation than conflict. It is that knowledge of knowing we lose much more than we gain which helps keep the peace.” He let his words settle on the air.

There was truth to that statement, eliminating the people who had issues with the status quo didn’t solve any of the problem that created the rebels in the the first place. So the destruction just delayed the next wave of rebels and started the cycle of terror, regrowth, and rebellion again. However these were fictional creatures, that evil was stereotypically and characteristically ingrained in the person.

His last statement turned to Hades and Ares. “On the other hand, this only works if both parties agree. Trust is a fragile thing. Once broken, it’s difficult to patch together and leave on display when you fear it’s going to fail again. I will also point that not trying something will ensure failure and eliminates possible outcomes. Both bad and good ones.”

Liam wasn’t sure if this conversation was getting through to any of them. With Hades’ last statement and Ares’ history, he wasn’t even sure if he wasn’t just wasting his energy. However, this conversation at least allowed the CMO to attend to the injured so it was worth keeping up.

Jennifer met Dr. Grey’s gaze and noticed a slight confusion in his expression. She couldn’t spare the attention to talk to him right now, all the way across the area, so she quietly waved a couple NE’s that were standing next to her to go over and check in - hopefully help him out with whatever he needed. Liam spoke wisely. She was glad to have him on the team. Ghubari had chosen well when she appointed him as CSO.

The sudden movement of the NE’s caused an immediate reaction in the tense situation. Hades took the distraction as an opportunity to leap at Athena, as did Cerberus.

Hammor moved in practiced response, positioning himself in front of Cerberus and pulling back a massive green arm and then throwing the stone in his hand as hard as he could at the beast and then bracing his short spear and chain; readying himself to catch the full weight of it on the scalpel-sharp tip of the spear head.

Athena spun to meet the new threat.

So much for detente.

Benjamin froze as he saw the sudden action that seemed to have been somehow sparked by him, he was conflicted, on one hand, he needed to get those wounded out of there before they bled out and he lost more patients, on the other hand, he wanted to give his crewmates assistance, but that dog-thing was pretty bloody big. He did not move.

Dr. Grey - CMO

As warned before, Hades rushed at Athena and aimed to strike. Cerberus, his loyal dog, quickly followed its master lead.

So much for cooperation, Liam thought. He had been walking from Cerberus’ range during his conversation until how he was closer to Athena and Ares.

He spotted Hammor plant himself in front of the mythical canine, his weapon ready. Meanwhile, Athena had already started to twist about to face her opponent. Everything happened in a slow motion his mind, his thoughts processing everything rapidly. Briefly, Liam’s eyes rested on Ares. In mythology, he was the god that usually took advantage of chaos with dirty and unhanded tactics to get away or push an advantage. Now was the perfect time to prove his sincerity in his words.

Instinctively, Liam’s hands began to heat up. In an attempt to cut off the attack from reaching Athena, he rushed at Hades and shifted his right shoulder forward. If he impacted, his hit would land on Hades’ side and hopefully send him into the ground.

Ares leapt to his feet behind Athena’s back…

bellowing to his army he purposefully dropped his weapon on the ground. “Hades acts alone, nobody move!”

The path was now clear to tend to the wounded but Hades and Cerberus continued their charge, heedless, Liam hit his mark on Hades shoulder spinning the dark armoured form who gracefully pirouetted to bring Liam into weapons range.

Cereberus leapt bodily at Hammor…

Hammor braced for the massive weight to land, the spear tip poised to take the massive beast on it’s tip through a very soft spot… the pit between it’s right front leg and it’s chest. As the beast fell towards him from it’s leap, Hammor shifted ever so slightly, readying to use Cerberus’ momentum to not only drive the spear deep into it’s body; but to also allow the Orion Ops Chief to push the thing’s trajectory into Hades.

Hammor

The beast howled as the spear struck home and barrelled sideways into the path of Hades who adroitly leapt clear momentarily blocked from his goal. The third head managed to take a chunk out of Hammor’s arm near the shoulder and the acid mucous in it’s mouth started to burn raising a reek that was almost unbearable to the senses.

In attacking others, Hades had to turn his back to R’han. He followed the ‘God’ to Athena raising his sword. His exposure was R’han’s advantage. He would strike out without mercy.
