Another nod and a sip of her coffee and Janna considered him deeply for a moment. She was only starting to be able to see where this new sensory capacity of hers was active and where it best not to use it. But in sessions seemed like fair game, even if she didn’t exactly have control over it. “Well, I can say we’re glad to have you. Being multi-skilled certainly never hurts on this ship. And the Athena is a beautiful design. Lots for engineers to enjoy.”

“Thank you, Counselor,” Ros nodded and drank more of his coffee. Personally he felt that the Mythology design was a whale of a design, though undeniably effective. For him, the sleek lines of the Viking and Pendragon classes stood out more. Of course, in space sleek counted for nothing and the Mythology had size and power at it’s fingertips.

“Tell me about your last position and if you have any concerns about settling in here,” Janna said.

~Janna Kingston, CNS

“As a Chief Engineer? That was on the Viking. The ship had a fair few issues due to it’s age and circumstances, so Engineering was a challenge. But, with an Engineering team that knew how to make the best of what they had that ship hummed. It was a good experience for a new Chief Engineer to have, I mean being on a ship that has resources, gets resupplied and doesn’t need to use plenty of duct tape sounds like something of a holiday to me.” Ros grinned, then continued speaking. “As such I have no concerns about settling in, the people I have met so far have been friendly, professional and courteous. There will be plenty to do while I find my place and there is always the lounge to spend some down time in. What would you recommend as places to see around here? Popular Holodeck programs or particular nights where something is happening somewhere?”

Lt Cmdr Akirel, CE

Janna smiled. “Well, The Parthenon, our lounge you already mentioned visiting. You’ll find Marishka’s done a fabulous job of redecorating. You can almost forget you’re on a starfleet vessel. The rest of recreation hall is very popular. People do take advantage of the card and game tables and there are regular tounaments and game nights. The crew has a bowling team put together but given how… variable our assignments can be they haven’t done any tournaments off the ship yet. Thought there was talk of a water-polo team being put together, so that could be interesting if you enjoy swimming. We have book clubs, poetry slam nights, open mic nights. Our musically inclined crew often put on concerts, so pick a night, there’s probably something happening somewhere.”

“Water Polo?” Ros grinned and shook his head. “I haven’t played that since the Academy and the requirement for Cadets to participate in some kind of sport. I tried a few, not many stuck with me.”

“As for holodeck programs, we’ve got the standard catalogue. I’m a fan of relaxing places that are very definitely not work,” Kingston said with a light laugh, her chin-length blond curs swaying. It was not a stretch to think that given the Athena’s notorious reputation for getting into trouble and the sheer size of the crew, that the six counsellors were kept rather busy.

“That makes sense,” Ros nodded. “There are a lot of people here, a lot of people wanting someone to listen to them and hear their cares. Somewhere quiet and away from the noise does sound like that would be comforting after a day of hearing voices at all hours. I think I’ll avoid the cards and game tables myself,” he smiled lightly for a moment. “I’ve done enough gambling for the time being but I’m sure a few of those Holodeck programs will come in handy.”

His eyes turned to look at the picture on the wall again, and he visibly sat back slightly more and looked at her. “So how about you? You might find the water relaxing considering where you come from. Did you have any intention of joining that Water Polo team or are you more of a book club and poetry slam kind of woman?”

Lt Cmdr Akirel, CE

Janna snorted. “No water polo for me, I’m much more a beach side, hang my legs in the water kind than being in it. Book clubs can be interesting, unless the people care only about inane conversation.” She shrugged. “I’d go to a poetry slam, though they can be hit or miss. Usually the bad poetry is terrible,” she said, a wicked gleam glinting in her grass green eyes.

For a moment Ros’ eyes displayed shock. “Hold on, you mean to tell me there is such a thing as good poetry?” He shook his head for a moment in thought, “The Athena must have been to some deep corners of the Galaxy to find good poetry,” he stopped shaking his head and looked at her, straight in her eyes, and managed to hold the serious expression on his face for at least two heartbeats before a grin snagged the corners of his mouth revealing his comment to be a tease.

“Tell me about being a Chief Engineer on the Athena. How are you finding the team so far?”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

“At this stage, welcoming and friendly,” his head tilted slightly to the door, indicating Cherry outside at the reception desk. “I’ve yet to sit down with the Engineering department, day one after all, but the rest of the crew I’ve met have been competent to say the least. I’ll reserve judgement on the rest until I’ve met them but I’m sure they wouldn’t be here if they didn’t know what they are doing.”

“I’ve met the Chief Med Tech, Doctor Grey. Had a conversation with Commander Nightstalker after getting off the shuttle and heard about all the exciting things that might happen when one goes anywhere around here,” Ros paused slightly and smiled, but whether it was about that or what he was about to say was hard to read. “I had a sit down with Commander Legen doing my meet and greet with the Executive Officer although I am yet to present to the Captain. Of course, I figured that I better get the check-in’s checked off before doing that, so you can warn her to watch out in case you see through my cover and discover I’m a raging lunatic deep down.” Now along with the smile, Ros casually winked at her to go with the jest.

“Oh yes, all sort of issues to be on the lookout for,” she deadpanned.

“Oh, and with this conversation that’s twice now I’ve heard the name of Marishka and her bar,” he tilted his head slightly as he spoke now, setting the earring swaying. “I’m going to have to check it out after duty tonight. First drinks on a new ship shouldn’t be alone after all and her lounge sounds poplar.”

Lt Cmdr Akirel, CE

Kingston grinned. “It’s a great place to relax. I don’t get tons of time to be there, but when I do, I enjoy it.”

“So, I’m the kind of counsellor that doesn’t poke my head in places unless I sense I need to. I prefer to have a rapport with the senior staff, and make sure you know I’m here as a sounding board if you need me to be, no matter what. If there is nothing you feel you want to discuss, I’m going to trust that you know yourself well enough to know when to seek me out. Your file tells me a lot and it also tells me that you seem to be handling the fluctuations that come with your life and career well enough. Does that sound accurate to you?”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

“Like a sharpshooter at ten paces, accurate,” Ros grinned. “I move around a lot by nature, my jobs have suited me well up till now, that brings ups and downs,” his grin dropped to a smile then, and he finished his drink and placed it down on the small table.

“But who counsels the counselor?” Ros asked her, the slight smile remaining. “I’m qualified, I’m sure you have seen that in my file. Counselors make the worst patients I know but, if you need to talk, you know where to find me.” Ros looked her in the eyes for a long moment, his deep greens looking into her grass greens. “It can be difficult talking to colleagues if you need to, but we all have those moments.” Ros paused slightly and smiled wider. “I’m one step removed from that,” he chuckled, “I know, you’ll graciously decline, but when the time comes you know I can listen. You might learn how to realign a plasma conduit during it though.”
