Noah had finished setting up his quarters, taken a quick sonic shower and tried out the replicator’s version of clam chowder. Definitely not like back home but he supposed he would have to get used to that considering there were not a lot of places around here to find a good Pacific razor clam. With all of that out of the way he decided he had better get cleared for duty. Conveniently, the counseling suites were just down the corridor from his quarters so that seemed like the best place to start.

With a final straightening of his uniform and a hand through his dark hair he stepped out into the corridor and made his way over to the counseling suites. He stepped inside and registered with the reception desk, then sat down to wait. Many people likely would have been nervous, counselors seemed to have a reputation of getting into people’s heads and digging around, but Noah was excited to meet and work with this group of professionals. Mental health is just as important to a person’s well being as their physical health and, with civilians onboard, there were likely a lot of surprising issues that came up from being in space for long periods of time. Besides all of that, Noah felt like he was a decently well adjusted individual and didn’t expect any surprises of his own.

Noah was’t waiting too long before the third door of the six in the semi-circle slide open. A petite woman with chin length blond curls stepped out, handing a PADD to the receptionist, the warm and friendly Risian, Cherry. The two conversed for a brief moment before Cherry handed the woman a PADD.

“Ensign Astor?” she said, breaking into a warm smile as she approached. “I’m Dr. Janna Kingston. I see you’re here for a boarding eval?”

Noah stood as the counselor approached and offered a polite smile.

“Yes ma’am,” he replied with a stiffness that betrayed the fact that he was fresh out of the Academy, “Ensign Noah Astor.”

Along with the stiffness, however, an aura of excitement radiated from beneath his shy features. The newness of this adventure, that was a career in Starfleet, was there threatening to burst out at any moment. The counselor was really the first person on the ship he had spoken to or interacted with apart from the transporter chief, which made this the first test of how he was going to handle himself. He was determined not to be the shy, quiet person in the corner but excited puppy dog would likely not be a good look either. Luckily, he managed to keep it together thus far.

Janna gave him a warm smile. “Come on in and we’ll have a friendly little chat, as we you do, do me one favour?”

“Breathe,” Kingston said with a wink.

Stepping through the red door, Janna’s office was a modest space rather fitting the petite woman. She didn’t go to great lengths to decorate, but it was definitely more than the standard grey furniture and carpet. On the wall above the couch was an image of an ocean scene that could be almost anywhere and the standard grey slim arm chairs had been replaced with softer larger armchairs in a dark blue that looked inviting to curl up into. On top of the standard carpet, the sitting area was covered in a plush rug in different shades of blues that matched the ocean in the photo. On the other side of the room where she mostly worked, there was a tall leafy plant near her desk and a single silver photo frame on the corner of the desk where she could easily see it when she worked at the computer terminal. Overall, the place was warm but practical and uncluttered- much like Janna.

“Are you a food and or beverage person during a chat, or would you prefer without?” Janna asked, gesturing to the sitting area for him to sit.
