Janna gave him a warm smile. “Come on in and we’ll have a friendly little chat, as we you do, do me one favour?”

“Breathe,” Kingston said with a wink.

“Erm.. yes ma’am,” Noah replied relaxing somewhat.

Stepping through the red door, Janna’s office was a modest space rather fitting the petite woman. She didn’t go to great lengths to decorate, but it was definitely more than the standard grey furniture and carpet. On the wall above the couch was an image of an ocean scene that could be almost anywhere and the standard grey slim arm chairs had been replaced with softer larger armchairs in a dark blue that looked inviting to curl up into. On top of the standard carpet, the sitting area was covered in a plush rug in different shades of blues that matched the ocean in the photo. On the other side of the room where she mostly worked, there was a tall leafy plant near her desk and a single silver photo frame on the corner of the desk where she could easily see it when she worked at the computer terminal. Overall, the place was warm but practical and uncluttered- much like Janna.

“Are you a food and or beverage person during a chat, or would you prefer without?” Janna asked, gesturing to the sitting area for him to sit.

“No, thank you, I actually just ate before I came over here. It was a bit of a trek on the transport shuttle and I figured you’d rather listen to me than my stomach,” he said as he settled into one of the chairs. “Something from back home, but the recipe could use a little bit of a tweak really.”

Janna flashed him a grin. “Food nostalgia can be hard. Our memories are so specific that it’s just sometimes hard that food to taste as good anywhere else.”’

He glanced around the room, appreciatively. It certainly hit all the marks to put people at ease, a stark contrast to the typical utilitarian motif of most starships. The chair definitely was comfortable too and he decided he may as well take advantage while he had the chance, so he settled back, folded his hands neatly in his lap and turned his gaze back to the counselor.

Janna recycled her old coffee (half-drunk and tepid by this point) and ordered another, it’s warmth soaking into her palm as se lifted it from the replicator. She allowed herself a moment to enjoy a good sip before she made her way over to Noah, taking up residence in the other chair. “So, you just arrived on the Athena. First impressions?”

~Janna Kingston, CNS

“Well my first impression is its BIG. Of course I read all the specs when I received my orders but there is a difference when you see it in real life. And so many people on board too. I think a lot of us in Starfleet Medical dream about being on the front lines somewhere with alert klaxons going off running around doing mass casualty triage but what we really end up with is a sleepy sickbay and the occasional clumsy engineer who burned themselves. I, on the other hand, am going to need to brush up on my pediatric topics and get ready for immunizations and growth charts.”

Realizing he had wandered off on a little bit of a tangent he focused back in on the counselor’s question, “Anyway, apart from all of that, the few people I’ve passed in the corridor seem polite.”

She grinned. “Oh you just wait Noah, I don’t know how much you’ve heard through the grapevine, but the Athena has a history of unusual and dangerous missions. Galaxy saving stuff, and no that’s not an exaggeration,” she said with a wink. “I think it would be wise for you to prepare for more of that and also for what that reality can mean.”

“What’s the most intense medical situation you’ve dealt with so far?” Kingston asked.
