She inhaled, exhaled, and inhaled again. “I mean, physically I’m fine. At first I didn’t really notice it, but I’d be sitting in sessions with people and I’d have this intuition about what they were feeling under the surface, the parts they weren’t willing to share. And I’m a skilled enough therapist that I can conjecture some of it from body language and what people leave out of the conversation, but I’m not that good.”

“And I wouldn’t call it empathy, not exactly. It’s not so precise a reading as that. But there’s more to it also, it’s like when…” Janna drifted off and looked at Orvos, studying him deeply. She knew how much he loathed others knowing the intimate details of his life, but this couldn’t be helped. He had said as much. And they were here now- it was too late. “When I touched Orvos a short while ago it was like I could reflect what he was feeling and he could feel what I was feeling. Like a momentary sharing that was absolute.” She looked back to Ben. “I have had physical contact with others and while I think I might read them deeper that way nothing like that has happened before, so our guess is that it’s both because we spent time in the Nexus.”

“I am also very confident in that assertion,” he said in a low voice, not wanting to bring too much attention to himself. Unfortunately, the less the doctor knew, the less unhappy he would be. He was sure though that details of their escapade were unnecessary. He only needed to know the important things after all.

-Lt. Commander Orvos Legen, CE

Ben looked at Orvos and raised an eyebrow at his comment then returned his attention to Janna “I see” He pulled a PaDD from a desk drawer, cleared the information and tapped absently with his right hand, not looking down at what he was writing “And has physical contact with others who haven’t shared your Nexus experience brought forth similar feelings of… connection?” He asked.

She closed her eyes and breathed deeply, giving herself a moment to steady herself. When she opened her eyes again, Janna nodded. “Not to the same degree though. Much less intense, less… obvious. But I have noticed with patients, especially ones I’ve been doing deep trauma work with, that there was something there, because I’m a more hands on therapist when I need to be. It’s entirely in hindsight, mind you. In that moment I wasn’t aware of it so keenly because I was focused on them, not me. But observation bias and all means I’m seeing it more and more.

Benjamin wrote down some notes “I see” He clasped his hands together “We’ll need some confirmation, either a controlled environment session or monitoring any changes in your system. I’ll also need to do a full physical and biobed scan. For privacy, I can clear out Sickbay 3 for an hour or two if you wish” He leaned back in his chair and frowned “Human brains haven’t evolved to handle empathic or telepathic abilities so we’ll need a full neurological workup but I’m not overly concerned on that front.” He tapped his thumbs together thoughtfully “I recommend the two of you refrain from any physical contact until further notice and if it’s alright with you I’d like Commander Orvos to be there when we give you your physical, I’ll need a record of any changes that happen when you two do come into contact”

Her expression slipped before she could fully tamp down on her reaction and it was one of disappointment. But she was a therapist and it was easy to summon the mask when needed. “I have no problem with him being there, and yes privacy would be welcome.” She avoided looking at Orvos even as she knew he’d be feeling the same thing as her. Far too easily could she summon the sensation of his lips on her, and the warmth and tingling that it caused. Five years. For five years they had danced around each other and finally after they had crossed that threshold they were being told ‘No, you can’t.’ It was maddening, even if she somewhat understood it. Was there a negative reaction when they touched? They had no idea. But they soon would and Janna was antsy to get the test over and done with. She had been a medical rab lat for too long in the early days after her aprahaemophilia diagnosis. This was going to be the same thing all over again, wasn’t it? Dipping her head, Janna could only feel resignation.
