Daggum softly snorted. “She’s pissed at you because you won’t let her help, and that’s what she’s here to do. Imagine how mad you’d be if I just walked in the door and said ‘Faye, you can’t work.’. You’d lose your shit. So let her on your lap and let her do her thing.”

She shot him a glare that wasn’t so different than the one the fluffy feline was giving her person. With an exasperated sigh Faye patted her lap and Tess was up and curled snuggly in moments. She really hated it when he was right. At least he wasn’t an insufferable smug person when he was though.

Daggum reclined and stretched his arms out across the back of the couch and laid his head back to stare at the ceiling. “Yeah… big day for sure.” he said. He was quiet for a couple of minutes, and then said “So I called Kodell.”

With wide eyes Faye actually pulled back sharply so she could look at him. “Wait, what? You did? Why?”

~Faye

Eyes closed, the giant Orion didn’t move. “Two reasons. First, I told him if he ever got it in his head that you coming to see him meant anything other than you seeking closure and you marrying an Orion meant anything other than I specifically was the one you wanted to spend your life with and decided to make a play; I would spend every waking moment of my life tearing his life and name apart brick by slaver brick. Second: I hired him to act as my agent for the purchase of the Pits.”

Daggum

Stunned was not even the word. Surprised didn’t cover it by a fraction. Mouth open, Faye took her sweet time coming up with a response and the only thing that seemed appropriate was, “Holy Shit!”

Her mind was branching trying to understand possible reasons and she could indeed up with many, but the only one that mattered was his reason. “Why buy that place? And why him?”

~Faye

Daggum still didn’t open his eyes. “Because he has the connections and resources to make it happen. Once people found out who I was… I mean, you heard that old bag back there… they’d be a lot of pushback. I am still a slave by their law. Can’t own property. Also, when I told him my plan, he engaged with it immediately.” He opened his eyes and turned his head to look at her. “It’s going to be a school and halfway house for the poor and freed slaves. Having a place like that will give people an option instead of having to sell themselves or their kids. Sent Paul a note, too. Asked him to find people who would be willing to teach and act as caretakers. Kodel volunteered to pay for security and renovations.” He laid his head back and closed his eyes again. “I guess he was listening when I told him to do and be better.”

Daggum

Faye sucked in a breath. It was a lovely idea. Of course he thought of something that amazing. Though he couldn’t see it, she smiled at him… then broke into laughter. My Orion husband plotting with my former Orion master. Sounds about right. Ahhh, Dag, you’re wonderful, you kow that, right?”

“You know… Linella said she was fine at the house. But this.... looking after others who needed a friendly face and safe place? I bet she’d be great there.”

~Faye

Daggum’s eyes opened and he thought for a moment. “She would… but no slaves are to be used. Ever. For anything. She’d have to be legally emancipated and paid for her services. And she said no to you. I don’t know how she would react to that offer… which would also have to come from Kodel. Best we can hope for is he can step far enough back to realize that even though he treats them well, he still owns sentient beings. And I don’t know if he is capable of that kind of self-assessment. At least, not without guidance.”

Daggum

Stoking Tess’ head, Faye thought over her conversation with the woman. “She told me that her situation was not the same as mine, that she had gotten into trouble and it was either be a slave or go to jail.” She carefully shifted her position, mindful to not disturb Tess who was rather delighted to be snuggled up with her person. “But it’s been decades Dag. She also said that she has always known that if she asked Kodell to be free or employed, he’d have agreed to it at any point. But if she has a reason to leave, to do something else? I’d call that poetic justice. Community service even. She’s older but she’s got a lot of years ahead of her. She should have the option of something else.” She knew she was picking up steam with the idea in her head and it was quickening her speech, but the could easily trace the sequence of events. “We can call Kodell and see if he’d suggest it. Hell, I’ll call him myself if it will make a difference!”

~Faye

Daggum simply said “No, Faye. Please… do not call him. Distance is needed between you two… and no, I’m not being a jealous husband.” He opened his ears and sat forward, elbows going to his knees. “Your history with him has always troubled you. You had an opportunity to finalize that. Yes, it will take some time to process that, but it happened. That guy? He’s carried a torch for how many years now? Used you as an excuse to hide from the world. I called him out on that… and he agreed. So you got your closure… let him him have his.”

He took a breath and then exhaled slowly. “But… I think we can do something. I’ll ask Paul to talk to him. Have him make sure Kodel knows if he doesn’t emancipate his slaves and he works on this he’s being a f@<king hypocrite. It can be Paul’s idea for her to do it. How’s that?”
