Janna also sipped on her drink and took a deep breath. “Well, I can say that I’m very glad I have a department of counsellors, because otherwise it would put me in an impossibly awkward position, since any of the crew are potentially my patients.” So that was hint one, it was (not unsurprising) someone on the crew. She wasn’t sure she should even say anything at all, but the reality was that she had no sounding board to help her figure it all out, and Daggum was, as he had been very clear about, her friend.

Folding her arms on the table, she leaned in. “Okay, so before the last crazy mission of our, I was… abducted. Long story short, I was in a place few people go to. Not unlike another realm or dimension. I can’t say anything more than that.” Kingston blew out a breath. “Anyway, I’ve had feelings for someone for a long time and we’ve had these… moments of connection but they never seemed to want to… reach the place I was at. But in the aftermath of this event, I’ve changed. I’ve been changed. Physiologically. And in the process of noticing and trying to understand what’s happening, we’ve connected. Properly.” She couldn’t help the grin on her face. “I don’t fall for people, Daggum. Usually. Maybe it’s being the constant student of behaviour, but here and now I want to do what you’ve suggested and toss caution to the wind and risk it all. I’ve never felt like this before and I don’t know how to think about it. It’s certainly not rational,” she said with a laugh.

Daggum’s eyes narrowed slightly and henleaned in as well. “When you say you were ‘changed physiologically’, what does that mean?”

It was different saying it aloud away from Sickbay, away from the privacy of someone who intimately understood the phenomenon, if not what it had done to her. Doubt, uncertainty. All reigned in her grass green eyes as she gazed at Daggum. “A knowing. Like, empathy. It’s an energetic thing we can monitor on a scan. I didn’t even realize I was doing it. I mean, I have a bloody doctorate in psychology. People expect me to be observant, intuitive. But this… is more. It’s stronger with touch and so far not so controllable that I can isolate it. That might change, I don’t know.”

“I’m entirely Human, Daggum. There’s no trace of psi-positive abilities from my mom, nor the donor they picked. But… I might as well be an empath,” she said with a shrug, reaching for her drink.

Daggum nodded and said “So is it your new empathy telling you this person is ready to pursue something, or have you actually talked to them?”

Daggum

Janna took a slow and deep breath. She should just say it and be done with it. That would be the most simple path forward. But why couldn’t she? It was an interesting question, and she might answer it here with Hammor, or it might need to percolate until later. “They… have also experienced the phenomenon that I was in, and as best we can understand, we resonate with each other. The part of him that was there recognizes the part of me that was there. And so, things have happened, and subsequently we’ve talked… and stuff.” She burst out laughing, bracing her elbows on the table and burying her face in embarrassment. “So ridiculous how hard this is to talk about,” she muttered between chuckles.

Daggum leaned back and looked at her, his emerald eyes reflecting the low light of the bar. “Janna… just… be careful, okay? You… and them too… have something going on. Make sure its the whole of the both of you that are in this. Not just bits and pieces and strange extra-dimensional energies, okay?” He then smiled. “You deserve to be happy, Janna. But even more you deserve to have real happiness.”

Lifting her head, her smile was deep and warm. “I appreciate you looking out for me, I do. But the weird thing about being on what I assumed was a one-sided crush, is that I know and understand that I’ve been in this longer than he has. Or… that’s what I thought. But I know better now. I know there was fear on both our parts. That there were reasons why he held back, and I knew him just well enough to know that if I pushed too hard I’d scare him off. You told me that if I never took any risks, I’d regret not living my life more fully. Well, I can’t take risk with my body without risking my life unnecessarily. So the only thing I can risk is my heart. Could that be harder if it goes badly? Yeah. But you want to know how how many people I’ve had flings, relationships, encounters with since I arrived on this ship five years ago?” She held up her her fingers formed into a circle.

“We’re not so different, you and I. We’ve both been on a potentially one-sided relationship that isn’t so one-sided. You’re giving me hope, my friend,” Janna said before lifting her glass again and downing the rest of it. She signalled to the server for third.

Daggum leaned back and smiled. “Ok, as long as you are good with it, so am I. But you tell him that if he screws up, there is a certain someone that will make hi life hell. Now, I’m not one of these ‘You make her cry I make you cry.’ types. I prefer a more… subtle… approach. You know… his sonic shower is just a bit too strong or too weak at random… turbolifts always take him to the wrong deck…the replicators only make him gagh. That kind of thing. And I’m the Operations guy… I can totally do it.” and he laughed.
